This paper describes and discusses a new concept for security control of powersystems. The concept is called system-protection and is intended to take advantage of the remote control system as well as the local protection system. The objective of the system-protection function is to counteract the propagation of disturbances from a system-wide point of view. This is achieved by using decentralized system in various substations for local decisions and actions and a centralized system within the remote control center for acquisition of system-wide information and planning of emergency control policies. The local decisions and action are based on local information, system-wide data, and emergency control policies. The latter two types of information are transferred from the remote control center. Consequently, the inherent possibilities for immediate actions in local systems are combined with the system-wide view of the remote control system. Hereby, an economically feasible solution to the security control problem of powersystems is obtained.

To support the power system operators and planners with integrated, consistent and flexible applications, it is suggested that a combination of new dp-techniques is used. The suggested techniques are a combination of the well-known analytical applications with knowledge-based applications and the utilization of 4th generation languages, relational databases, personal computers and others. The existence of new energy production techniques is detrimental to the use of decoupled algorithms such as separate use of unit commitment and dispatch;even the neglect of the interaction between operation and long-range power system expansion planning may be doubtful.

This paper addresses the problem of the stabilization of hybrid mode oscillations associated with generator rotor dynamics. A Hybrid PSS with a two-level structure is proposed. Weighted combination of local and global control signals is used as the supplementary signal for the improvement of both local and inter-area mode components. Time-scale decomposition is used for the decoupling of local and global control law design. Determination of global control law is based on slow-coherency aggregated model. A procedure for the identification of optimum stabilizer site based on an index of mode-input-assignment is introduced.

This paper presents a model and computer simulation results of the distributed collectors field of a solar power plant. This plant is located in Tabernas (Almeria - Spain). The dynamic behaviour of the distributed collectors field is simulated by 100 lumpe parameter submodels. Temperatures of the oil and the tube walls are modelled separately. The model also takes into account sun position, field geometry, mirrors reflectivity, solar radiation, and the inlet field oil temperature.

An approach to the steady-state security assessment of large interconnected powersystems for purposes of operational planning is proposed. Consequences of large disturbances are analysed on the basis of the successive solution of the load-flow problem for a set of characteristical postdynamic quasistationary states of the power system, where the influence of primary voltage and frequency control, the effects of necessary dispatch activities and the effects of system of automatic secondary control of frequency and tie-line powers flow is taken into consideration. For the load-flow models formed in this way, introducing some improvements and taking into consideration the physical nature of the phenomena under study, special fast decoupled solution procedures are developed. The efficiency of the methodology developed is tested in the steady-state security analysis of the powersystems of Yugoslavia, for a series of characteristics large single and multiple disturbances.

This paper reports a number of important features of special experience and achievements in the field of automatic power plant control. The use of more sophisticated control equipment is not only observed on new units but on older units as well, where it has been retrofitted. The functions for which automatic systems are made responsible have become increasingly numerous and are more and more concerned with normal operation in an extensive operation range (0-20 to 100% CMR), shut-downs and start-ups and, finally, with the combined overall behaviour of a number of units when system incidents occur which affect them (short-circuits, tripping to houseload, tripping to isolated network). The ever-increasing application of modelling and of various models for study and research purposes is highlighted, in particular. from the technological point of view, the part increasingly played by microprocessor-based equipment is a determining factor as regards the results obtained. Two examples of unit profitability improvement calculations are presented.

In Denmark a recent tuning of all stabilizers has been based on field tests. Measurements of the performance of the stabilizers have been made in the whole frequency range of interest by the help of artificially made system oscillations with adjustable amplitude and frequency. The paper describes the background, the test methods and the results and experiences obtained by the tests. The measurements from the tests are compared with calculations illustrating the uncertainties occurring in investigations of network damping. Finally the applied tuning philosophy for the stabilizers is discussed.

The reliable and economical operation on electrical power distribution system (EPDS) becomes more and more significant under the normal situation and emergency. An intelligent control for EPDS is presented in this paper in which expert control and decision control are involved. Several inference mechanisms are proposed and applied in expert control for EPDS. The expert's knowledge is represented in the rule form. State observation, optimization principle and the queueing method for decision control schemes are adopted in multiobjective decision control so that a decision control scheme corresponding to a distinct state can be confirmed quickly. Intelligent control is realized by a hierarchical distributed microcomputer control system.
