The localization of dipolar sources in the brain based on EEG or MEG data is a frequent problem in the neurosciences. Especially deterministic approaches often have problems in finding the global optimum of the associated non-linear optimization function, when two or more di poles are to be reconstructed. In such cases, probabilistic approaches turned out to be superior, but their applicability in neuromagnetic source localizations is not yet satisfactory. The objective of this study was the design of multi-level evolution strategies that perform better in such applications. We newly created nested fast evolution strategies which realize a combination of locally searching inner evolution strategies and globally searching outer fast evolution strategies. They were benchmarked and compared to single-level fast evolution strategy by conducting a two dipole fit with a MEG data set from a neuropsychological experiment. In the comparison, fast nested evolution strategies showed superior performance.

Supply chain network (SCN) design is to provide an optimal platform for efficient and effective supply chain management. It is an important and strategic operations management problem in supply chain management, and usually involves multiple and conflicting objectives such as cost, service level, resource utilization, etc. This paper proposes a new solution procedure based on genetic algorithms to find the set of Pareto-optimal solutions for multi-objective SCN design problem. To deal with multi-objective and enable the decision maker for evaluating a greater number of alternative solutions, two different weight approaches are implemented in the proposed solution procedure. An experimental study using actual data from a company, which is a producer of plastic products in Turkey, is carried out into two stages. While the effects of weight approaches on the performance of proposed solution procedure are investigated in the first stage, the proposed solution procedure and simulated annealing are compared according to quality of Pareto-optimal solutions in the second stage. A multi-objective order-planning model is formulated for manufacturing steel sheets. The objectives include minimizing tardiness cost, balancing utility of capacities and minimizing inventory cost. The weighted-sum approach is used for transferring the multiple objectives into single one, as well as a penalty function is used for incorporating constraints into the objective function. Specific particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is designed to solve the model. Taking three practical order-planning problems as instances, different sets of parameter combinations are systemically designed to test effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm in experiments;computation results show that the model and algorithm are superior to human-machine coordination method. Purpose - To develop a practical design tool employing a general purpose electromagnetic finite element (FE) software package to perform automated simulation and performance analysis of induction motors in a design and optimisation process. Design/methodology/approach - Recent publications identified a suitable approach in applying 2D finite-element analysis to 3D problems. This, together with other similar work carried out on brushless DC motors, set out a framework for program development. Performance of the program was validated against practical test data. Findings - Finite-element analysis-based design tools can be realistically employed within a design office environment and are capable of providing solutions within acceptable time scales. Such tools no longer require user expertise in the underlying FE modelling method. The multiple slice technique was employed to model skew in three-phase induction motors and it was established that a four-slice model provides a good balance between accuracy and speed of computation. Research limitations/impfications - Program development was based on one commercial FE software package and comparison with practical test data was not exhaustive. However, the approach outlined confirms the practical application. Future work could consider alternative approaches to optimisation. practical implications - Computing hardware and commercially available 2D FE software have developed sufficiently to enable multi-slice techniques and optimisation to be employed in the analysis and design of machines. Originality/value - This paper provides a practical illustration of how commercial electromagnetic software can be employed as a design tool, demonstrating to industry that such tools no longer need to be bespoke and can realistically be used within a design office.

A user satisfaction level model, which focuses on the real feeling of grid users, is proposed in this paper. The model can integrate, not only multiple-aspect demands of different grid users, but also their preferences in different aspects. An abstract user satisfaction level function and its properties are also defined in the model. Based on the model, an effective grid task scheduling algorithm SatOpt is provided and a multivariate Gaussian Function is chosen as the practical user satisfaction level function, The SatOpt algorithm is a three-stage heuristic multi-objectiveoptimization algorithm and it can achieve near ideal results. To validate the idea provided in this paper, a MetaService architecture which can provide an extensible and feasible implementation of the SatOpt algorithm is designed. Experiment results show that the Sat opt algorithm based on the user satisfaction level model can significantly improve the user satisfaction level compared with the related methods.

This study presents an approach to solve multi-response simulation optimization problems. This approach integrates a simulation model with a genetic algorithm heuristic and a goal programming model. This method was modified to perform the search considering the mean and the variance of the responses. This way, the selection process of the genetic algorithm is performed stochastically, and not deterministically like most of the approaches reported in the literature. The methodology was tested using a simulation model of a cancer treatment facility created by the authors. The multi-objectiveoptimization heuristic was successfully used to improve the performance of the model relative to four different system objectives. Empirical results show that the methodology is capable of generating an important part of the Pareto optimal frontier, mostly concentrated in the center portion, where practical solutions are generally located.

This paper approaches cognition on the physical and MAC layers by defining a common language of "knobs" and "meters" to discuss adaptation and learning. Cognitive radio merges artificial intelligence and software defined radios (SDR). It requires a simple language for communicating between these two levels. We define a method for doing this. We also discuss a genetic algorithm approach to perform intelligent radio adaptation, using the GNU radio platform as an example. We provide both conceptual and practical implementation details of a cognitive radio acting at the physical and MAC layers. Results presented show the promise for the genetic algorithm adaptation within the multi-objectiveoptimization environment of the cognitive radio

Because of the necessity for considering various creative and engineering design criteria, optimal design of an engineering system results in a highly-constrained multi-objectiveoptimization problem. Major numerical approaches to such optimal design are to force the problem into a single objective function by introducing unjustifiable additional parameters and solve it using a single-objectiveoptimization method. Due to its difference from human design in process, the resulting design often becomes completely different from that by a human designer. This paper presents a novel numerical design approach, which resembles the human design process. Similar to the human design process, the approach consists of two steps: (1) search for the solution space of the highly-constrained multi-objectiveoptimization problem and (2) derivation of a final design solution from the solution space. multi-objective gradient-based method with Lagrangian multipliers (MOGM-LM) and centre-of-gravity method (CoGM) are further proposed as numerical methods for each step. The proposed approach was first applied to problems with test functions where the exact solutions are known, and results demonstrate that the proposed approach can find robust solutions, which cannot be found by conventional numerical design approaches. The approach was then applied to two practical design problems. Successful design in both the examples concludes that the proposed approach can be used for various design problems that involve both the creative and engineering design criteria.
