The industrial operator interface market has traditionally been composed of low-cost, proprietary displays designed to provide push-button replacement capability for OEMs and System Integrators. The purpose of this paper is to show how the evolution of computer technology, reduction in component cost of flat screen display technology and the introduction of real-time Windows-based operating systems combined with industrial control and monitoring software will lead a dramatic shift towards open systems based on industrial PC technology.

This article describes the new Component Object Model (COM)-based specification for the manufacturing industry, as defined by five leading industrial automation suppliers. The COM specification, referred to as 'OLE for Process Control' or 'OLE-PC' in this paper, is an initial standardized blueprint for enabling disparate industrial automation manufacturing systems to work together. OLE-PC defines a set of standard object access interfaces, or methods, for developers to use in building their industrial automation software applications. At the time of this writing in May, representatives from the five firms planned to meet and work throughout the summer in order to complete the first draft specification in September, just prior to ISA Fall '95.

In the past alarm systems have consisted of status lights or dedicated annunciators. Present systems are computer based. Do the computer based systems perform better than the older systems? An alarm system should: 1) Scan fast enough to see ALL important changes. 2) Allow analysis of these changes. (minimize nuisance alarms. 3) Recommend operator actions. Future alarm systems should become diagnostic systems which satisfy all three requirements.

Batch plants use various vehicles to transport drums and liquid and solid raw materials and products, and even equipment. Whether the plant has automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) or manned vehicles, scheduling can be complex. Flexible manufacturing batch plants, which have the ability to rapidly reconfigure for different product mixes, create additional scheduling challenges. Some of the equipment may itself be on skids for transport from one network of fixed piping to another. This paper presents a computer algorithm to schedule the transport for some example batch plants with AGVs.

This paper will address the merits and benefits of three control philosophies. First, the advantages of distributed control schemes will be discussed in terms of both machine builders and end users of discrete manufacturing equipment. Next, the use of industrial PCs and embedded PCs will be presented as a method to obtain distributed control and MMI on multi station manufacturing equipment. Last, the advantages of flow charting for control will be highlighted and compared to other control scenarios. As a summary, all three concepts will be presented as a common solution for machine control which will benefit the OEM, programmer, and end user in terms of both initial cost and ease of maintenance. Other typical and traditional control schemes, hardware, and methods will be discussed briefly as a method of comparison.

With the advent of RISC based microprocessor chips such as the Alpha, PowerPC, and others, a new platform of computer power is now being unleashed for real-time control applications. RISC chips will affect the embedded and workstation markets because of its lower cost and higher computing power. This paper will examine some of the issues facing a control engineer in the selection of a RISC based system and look at possible future uses of RISC in the instrumentation and control industry. Issues include: embedded products versus workstations, hardware selection, operating system selection, and control software selection in workstation applications. Some problems that need addressing include the effects that pipelining instructions may have in real-time control and how to conduct evaluations of hardware and software performance. The paper will also review some of the characteristics of RISC chips currently on the market and of those on the way. New control strategies that could be implemented with RISC, such as fuzzy logic and neural networks, will also be briefly explored.

Traditional real-time computer systems have historically been focused on small, simple, centralized, static, subsystems for low-level, sampled-data monitoring and first-order control. While that remains a healthy market, the industrial automation regime (among others) is also expanding to include large, complex, distributed, dynamic, mission-critical real-time systems. These impose dramatic new real-time operating system (OS) requirements, such as OS support for predictable end-to-end behaviors - e.g., computation completion timeliness, consistency of distributed execution and data, fault detection and recovery - despite inherent uncertainties (such as variable latencies and partial failures) in the application and computer system execution environment. Conventional real-time OS concepts and techniques are insufficient to satisfy such requirements. This paper provides a brief overview - first, of the new expansion of the real-time regime, and then of some of the more general and powerful distribution and real-time technologies which are emerging for next-generation industrial (particularly process) automation OS's.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) currently operates four advanced 500MW coal fired power plants with supercritical once through boilers. Sixteen additional units for thermal power plants are in various stages of design and under construction with all scheduled for commercial operation by the end of this century. The control systems for the Poryong plants are designed with the application of distributed digital control (in other words, DCS) technology capable of two-shift cycling and/or daily start and stop (DSS) operations with good operating performance, high reliability and enhanced availability. The features to be discussed in this paper include: (1) an advanced control technique that provides a rapid response to load variations of the grid while maintaining stable steam temperature control;(2) a fully automated higher level sequence operation that provides low operating costs resulting from reduced unit startup time;(3) an unique boiler and turbine control strategy that sets up an appropriate balance electricity of generation and steam pressure control functions using high pressure bypass valves;(4) an utilization of state-of-the art instrumentation which provides measurements for process feedback from any mode of plant operation;and (5) a fail safe design that provides reliable plant operation without major upsets.
