Dynamic power management (DPM) is critical to maximizing the performance of systems ranging from multicore processors to datacenters. However, one formidable challenge with DPM schemes is verifying that the DPM schemes are correct as the number of computational resources scales up. In this paper, we develop a DPM scheme such that it is scalably verifiable with fully automated formal tools. the key to the design is that the DPM scheme has fractal behavior;that is, it behaves the same at every scale. We show that the fractal design enables scalable formal verification and simulation shows that our scheme does not sacrifice much performance compared to an oracle DPM scheme that optimally allocates power to computational resources. We implement our scheme in a 2-socket 16-core x86 system and experimentally evaluate it. © 2014 IEEE.

Digital media content has increased massively due to which, cloud computing is rapidly gaining importance. Cloud computing not only provides ubiquitous access, but also, ease of management of hugely increasing data. the next era is going to be of cloud federation, in which services would be brought up to the user through multiple clouds, creating an Inter-Cloud computing environment. One of the key entities in Inter-Cloud computing is Cloud Broker. Cloud Broker plays an important role in cloud federation environment. Broker has to reserve resources and perform pricing and billing. We have proposed a model for this purpose and presented here, along with its performance evaluation.

In the past several years, organizations have been changing their storage methods as the volume of data they managed has increased. the cloud computing paradigm offers new ways of storing data based on scalability and on good conditions of reliability and accessibility. this paper proposes the design of HPS3, a service that uses compression and concurrency techniques in order to reduce storage costs and data processing times in public storage providers. Different strategies for compressing and uploading data depending on differential characteristics of the datasets are also explained. the evaluation of HPS3 shows, in comparison with the default use of the cloud storage provider (Amazon S3), an average reduction of 61.6% in data transfer volume, 85.5% in upload time and 73.2% in incurred costs. Compared to Dropbox, HPS3 shows an average improvement of 27.4% in data transfer volume and 93.6% in upload time.

this paper presents an extensive performance study of the implementation of Hardware Transactional Memory (HTM) in the Haswell generation of Intel x86 core processors. this study evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of this new architecture exploring several dimensions in the space of Transactional Memory (TM) application characteristics using the Eigenbench [1] and the CLOMP-TM [2] benchmarks. this detailed performance study provides insights on the constraints imposed by the Intel's Transaction Synchronization Extension (Intel's TSX) and introduces a simple, but efficient policy for guaranteeing forward progress on top of the besteffort Intel's HTM and also was critical to achieving performance. the evaluation also shows that there are a number of potential improvements for designers of TM applications and software systems that use Intel's TM and provides recommendations to extract maximum benefit from the current TM support available in Haswell. © 2014 IEEE.

the use of closed solutions from most known vendors to carry out network-monitoring tasks has turned out to be a questionable option given their lack of flexibility and extensibility, which has typically been translated into higher costs. Consequently, we study whether high-performance monitoring tasks can be carried out using off-the-shelf systems, the alternative to these pitfalls from the research community, consisting in the combination of open-source software and commodity hardware. We focus on sniffing and storing network traffic as one of the major tasks in any monitoring architecture. Specifically, we first review the keys to sniff traffic at multi-gigabit rates, and then present an experimental evaluation of commodity hard drives. Finally, the lessons learned from such studies and the performed experiments have conducted us to the development of an open solution, namely HPCAP, which sniffs and stores multi-gigabit traffic using commodity hardware without packet losses in very demanding scenarios.

the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) is a fundamental law governing the evolution of large sets of particles. BTE numerical solvers are involved in various physical contexts such as nuclear core simulation. A large class of BTE solvers are based on a so-called sweep algorithm that represents the vast majority of the computing operations. In this work, we present an implementation of this sweep algorithm on top of the Parsec runtime. this implementation combines efficiently three levels of parallelism: SIMD, Multi-threads, and Message Passing. Measured performance on a supercomputer having 768cores reaches 6.2 Tflop/s, and corresponds to 34.4 % of the theoretical peak performance of this supercomputer.

Scientific applications generate raw data files in very large scale. Most of these files follow a standard format established by the domain area application, like HDF5, NetCDF and FITS. these formats are supported by a variety of programming languages, libraries and programs. Since they are in large scale, analyzing these files require writing a specific program. Generic data analysis systems like database management systems (DBMS) are not suited because of data loading and data transformation in large scale. Recently there have been several proposals for indexing and querying raw data files without the overhead of using a DBMS, such as noDB, RAW and FastBit. their goal is to offer query support to the raw data file after a scientific program has generated it. However, these solutions are focused on the analysis of one single large file. When a large number of files are all related and required to the evaluation of one scientific hypothesis, the relationships must be managed manually or by writing specific programs. the proposed approach takes advantage of existing provenance data support from Scientific Workflow Management Systems (SWfMS). When scientific applications are managed by SWfMS, the data is registered along the provenance database at runtime. therefore, this provenance data may act as a description of theses files. When the SWfMS is dataflow aware, it registers domain data all in the same database. this resulting database becomes an important access method to the large number of files that are generated by the scientific workflow execution. this becomes a complementary approach to the single raw data file analysis support. In this work, we present our dataflow approach for analyzing data from several raw data files and evaluate it with the Montage application from the astronomy domain. © 2014 IEEE.

this paper targets scientists and programmers who need to develop e-science applications for heterogeneous distributed platforms: Grid, Volunteer computing, cluster and Cloud. We present a rich environment used to develop and deploy high performance applications (HPC) on large scale distributed and heterogeneous platforms. We particularly target iterative e-science applications where (i) convergence conditions and the number of jobs are not known in advance, (ii) jobs are created on the fly and (iii) jobs could be persistent. We propose two paradigms so as to provide intuitive statements enabling an easy writing of HPC e-science applications. Non-expert developers (scientific researchers) can use them to guarantee a fast development and an efficient deployment of their applications.

In this paper, we aim to introduce a new perspective when comparing highly parallelized algorithms on GPU: the energy consumption of the GPU. We give an analysis of the performance of linear algebra operations, including addition of vectors, element-wise product, dot product and sparse matrixvector product, in order to validate our experimental protocol. We also analyze their uses within conjugate gradient method for solving the gravity equations on Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Cusp library is considered and compared to our own implementation with a set of real matrices arrising from the Chicxulub crater and obtained by the finite element discretization of the gravity equations. the experiments demonstrate the performance and robustness of our implementation in terms of energy efficiency.
