The authors present a method to smooth a signal-whether it is an intensity image, a range image, or a contour-which preserves discontinuities and thus facilitates their detection. This is achieved by repeatedly convolving the signal with a very small averaging filter modulated by a measure of the signal discontinuity at each point. This process is related to the anisotropic diffusion reported by P. Perona and J. Malik (1987) but it has a much simpler formulation and is not subject to instability or divergence. Real examples show how this approach can be applied to the smoothing of various types of signals. The detected features do not move, and thus no tracking is needed. The last property makes it possible to derive a novel scale-space representation of a signal using a small number of scales. Finally, this process is easily implemented on parallel architectures: the running time on a 16 K connection machine is three orders of magnitude faster than on a serial machine.< >

Texture features have been among major tools in image analysis field for decades. Their applications in various computerized biomedical image processing.teak advantage of the fact that computers are better than human observers at analyzing second order statistics. The attempt to make use of a similar approach to provide additional insight into EEG pattern recognition was presented by A. Petrosian et al. (Annual Meeting of the American EEG society, New Orleans, LA, USA, p.88, Oct. 10-15, 1993). This study represents further development of suggested methods in recognition of different interictal, preictal, ictal, and postictal stages from EEG recordings. Practical application that is relevant to this study includes prediction of epileptic activity in patients before an actual seizure occurs. Although this study is preliminary and was carried out on the data obtained from one patient, the results showed feasibility of using signal texture information for distinguishing different abnormal patterns.< >

In this paper, we propose an ICA (Independent Component Analysis) based face recognition algorithm, which is robust to illumination and pose variation. Generally, it is well known that the first few eigenfaces represent illumination variation rather than identity. Most PCA (Principal Component Analysis)-based methods have overcome illumination variation by discarding the projection to a few leading eigenfaces. The space spanned after removing a few leading eigenfaces is called the "residual face space". We found that ICA in the residual face space provides more efficient encoding in terms of redundancy reduction and robustness to pose variation as well as illumination variation, owing to its ability to represent non-Gaussian statistics. Moreover, a face image is separated into several facial components, local spaces, and each local space is represented by the ICA bases (independent components) of its corresponding residual space. The statistical models of face images in local spaces are relatively simple and facilitate classification by a linear encoding. Various experimental results show that the accuracy of face recognition is significantly improved by the proposed method under large illumination and pose variations.

An edge-based trinocular stereovision algorithm is presented. The primitives it works on are cubic B-spline approximations of the 2-D edges. This allows one to deal conveniently with curvature and to extend to some nonpolyhedral scenes to previous stereo algorithms. To build a matching primitive, the principle of the algorithm is, first, to find a triplet of corresponding points on three splines. This is provided by the bootstrapping part. Second, the algorithm propagates along the three supporting splines to find other matching points. This provides a set of ordered point triplets along these three splines, for which all the matching constraints are verified. This primitive constitutes a trinocular hypothesis. The set of all hypotheses is obtained by propagating from all the point triplets provided by the bootstrapping process. A criterion based on the size of the hypotheses is then used to choose among them a compatible set with respect to the uniqueness constraint. Results of several 3-D reconstructed scenes are shown.< >

In this paper, we exploit some previous theoretical results about decision tree pruning to derive a color segmentation algorithm which avoids some of the common drawbacks of region merging techniques. The algorithm has both statistical and computational advantages over known approaches. It authorizes the processing.of 512/spl times/512 images in less than a second on conventional PC computers. Experiments are reported on thirty-five images of various origins, illustrating the quality of the segmentations obtained.

We describe an efficient method of improving the performance of vision algorithms operating on video streams by reducing the amount of data captured and transferred from image sensors to analysis servers in a data-aware manner. The key concept is to combine guided, highly heterogeneous sampling with an intelligent Scene Cache. This enables the system to adapt to spatial and temporal patterns in the scene, thus reducing redundant data capture and processing. A software prototype of our framework running on a general-purpose embedded processor enables superior object detection accuracy (by 56%) at similar energy consumption (slight improvement of 4%) compared to an H.264 hardware accelerator.

A method to estimate the intrinsic and extrinsic patterns of a camera model is presented. The intrinsic parameters of camera center and focal length are estimated with a calibration device which is adjusted iteratively with four independent motions. Experimentation demonstrates that inexperienced users rapidly converge to satisfactory estimates. Extrinsic parameters define the position and orientation of the camera in a world coordinate frame. The straightforward formulation of this mapping leads to a complex system of nonlinear equations. Solutions based on nonlinear estimation techniques used unconstrained sets of known target points. These methods may converge to an incorrect solution and are characteristically ill-conditioned. By imposing a simple regularity on the arrangement of calibration points, the problem can be decomposed into a series of simple one- or two-parameter linear equations. The approach is described, and empirical tests of the accuracy of the method are given.< >

Virtually all methods in image processing.and computer vision, for removing weather effects from images, assume single scattering of light by particles in the atmosphere. In reality, multiple scattering effects are significant. A common manifestation of multiple scattering is the appearance of glows around light sources in bad weather. Modeling multiple scattering is critical to understanding the complex effects of weather on images, and hence essential for improving the performance of outdoor vision systems. We develop a new physics-based model for the multiple scattering of light rays as they travel from a source to an observer. This model is valid for various weather conditions including fog, haze, mist and rain. Our model enables us to recover from a single image the shapes and depths of sources in the scene. In addition, the weather condition and the visibility of the atmosphere can be estimated. These quantities can, in turn, be used to remove the glows of sources to obtain a clear picture of the scene. Based on these results, we demonstrate that a camera observing a distant source can serve as a "visual weather meter". The model and techniques described in this paper can also be used to analyze scattering in other media, such as fluids and tissues. Therefore, in addition to vision in bad weather, our work has implications for medical and underwater imaging.

In this article, we propose an efficient and accurate compressive sensing-based method for estimating the light transport characteristics of real world scenes. Although compressive sensing allows efficient estimation of a high-dimension signal with a sparse or near-to-sparse representation from a small number of samples, the computational cost of the compressive sensing in estimating the light transport characteristics is relatively high. Moreover, these methods require a relatively smaller number of images compared with other techniques although they still need 500-1000 images to estimate an accurate light transport matrix. Our proposed method - precomputed ROMP (Regularized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit) - improves the performance of the compressive sensing by providing an appropriate initial state, which allows us to more accurately estimate the matrix with fewer images. This improvement was achieved through two steps: 1) pseudo-single pixel projection by multi-line projection - measuring coarse light transport characteristics to utilize them as an initial state, 2) ROMP with initial signal - refining coarse light transport characteristics with the compressive sensing theory with the initial signal. Precomputed ROMP was carried out by parallel processing. With these two steps, we were able to estimate the light transport characteristics more accurately, much faster, and with a lesser number of images.

In this paper, we present a fast approach to automated generation of textured 3D city models with both high details at ground level, and complete coverage for bird's-eye view. A close-range facade model is acquired at the ground level by driving a vehicle equipped with laser scanners and a digital camera under normal traffic conditions on public roads; a far-range Digital Surface Map (DSM), containing complementary roof and terrain shape, is created from airborne laser scans, then triangulated, and finally texture mapped with aerial imagery. The facade models are first registered with respect to the DSM by using Monte-Carlo-Localization, and then merged with the DSM by removing redundant parts and filling gaps. The developed algorithms are evaluated on a data set acquired in downtown Berkeley.
