In case of vision based driver assistance a processing.in real time is necessary. In analogy to the visual system in humans this can be achieved by focussing the limited resources of a system to those parts of an image that are relevant to the task. Within this framework we present an approach to attention control that is embedded in a system for traffic scene analysis (MOSAIK). Based on motion analysis and strategies for perceptual grouping regions of interests, so-called attention fields, are detected. The integration of such attention mechanisms yields the advantage that a detailed recognition is only necessary on selected parts of an image. We show that the interaction between supervising attention control, detailed recognition and fast tracking supports a very efficient analysis. So MOSAIK computes a robust scene description nearly in real time and that on complex scenes, too.

Object recognition using color images has great potential due to the greater information content of color images. One particular advantages of color processing.in object recognition is the potential to eliminate segmentation problems caused by shadow, on the assumption that the color properties of an object are independent of illumination intensity. However, the elimination color variation due to shadows requires correct colorimetric camera calibration and a color pixel representation which separates color properties from brightness. Hence, this paper presents an alternative measure of depth of color which is called color purity. The use of color purity can facilitate segmentation of color images using color properties and clutter analysis. Its potential to limit the effects of quantization noise in color imageprocessing.is described.

In this paper several design methods for parallel genetic algorithms (PGAs) optimizing morphological filters are discussed and an optimal scale and machine independent PGA for a loosely coupled, homogeneous or inhomogeneous multiprocessor computer is developed. The optimization is made in terms of computation speed, parallelization efficiency and quality. Quality means, in this context, the fitness of the best chromosome, which is an objective measure for the performance of the corresponding morphological filter in a particular environment.

This study presents several new and established techniques for low bit-rate coding of motion images. In particular, the techniques are referred to as open-loop coding, windowed motion vector compensation, temporal weighting, and noise coding. In general, these techniques operate with QCIF source pictures at a frame rate of 12.5Hz.

We propose a system for the detection of mammographic calcifications. Our method first segments the image into suspected calcification regions and then classifies each detected region as calcification or normal background. The segmentation method exploits new local thresholding and region growing techniques suitable for the detection of small blobs in a textured background. The next step of processing.is to decrease the number of falsely detected blobs obtained in the first step using patternrecognition techniques. Seven features of the detected regions are used for classification of the segmented region. A Quadratic classifier was used to classify mammographic calcification using the region's features. The results of the experimental study using a set of 20 mammographic images shows that the proposed system has a good capability to detect calcifications in mammographic images.

Thresholding of images is a common precursor to many object recognition or image analysis methods and in many applications of color imageprocessing. there will be a need for thresholding. This paper presents a hardware implementation and development of a technique using a rational arithmetic representation for hue. This allows fast, simple arithmetic which can be implemented on a field-programmable gate array and which can threshold color pixels at close to pixel clock rate, thus allowing real-time thresholding of a color video signal. In addition, a color property known as color purity is used which is similar to the conventional in the standard hue, saturation, intensity (HSI) representation;but is more suitable for thresholding, being less dependent on intensity variation.

Conditional morphological operators have been used for feature extraction and enhancement in greyscale images. Templates are used to determine the presence of specific spatial structures in the intensity map. Applied conditions permit noise defects preventing full containment of the template to occur, and allow recognition of 'broad brush' classes of features as well as specific single structures. The theoretical methods used are explained and practical templates indicated. Practical examples include the delineation of soft tissue wounds, enhancement of textural differences and feature extraction.
