Some research institutes are elaborating plans to develop super high definition (SHD) image data beyond the HDTV. The SHD images should have high spatial and temporal resolutions. Picture quality can be enhanced by incorporating imageprocessing.techniques into imaging process. Imaging methods based on this approach can be classified into two main categories;a spatial integration imaging method and a temporal imaging method. Just recently, a spatial integration imaging method that performs well has been presented. In the present study, a temporal integration imaging method that uses a single camera and produces an improved-resolution and/or low SNR image by integrating multiple consecutive image frames taken with the camera is presented. Experimental simulations are conducted to demonstrate that this method works well.

Coherent images of natural scenes, in particular those of the land using a synthetic aperture radar (SAR), often possess some kind of textural properties. To understand these textural properties, a phenomenological approach to describe clutter texture using a statistical noise model is proposed. The stationarity approximation allows real data sample estimates of statistical measures to be used to characterize the textures. Simulations using the model and parameter estimates are useful for assessing the worth of the model and how applicable it is. They also allow target detection algorithms to be assessed in a controlled manner.

A novel processing.system which can segment images of human cerebellar tissue using mathematical morphological functions was developed. In the vast majority of test images (92%), the algorithm gives satisfactory results, being class as either perfect or adequate. Of the images in which the segmentation was rated poor, most were affected by extraneous factors. It must be recognized that a biological system of this nature will have to deal with artificial information, however, the use of contexual information from the adjacent microscope fields, which is not exploited in the present algorithm, may help to reduce these errors.

The paper presents a comparative study of performance of 2D vector median filters which calculate in various color coordinates the distances between the vectors corresponding to pixels of color images. The paper deals with the problem of the best choice of the color space for vector median calculations. The problem is considered for the task of restoration of color images corrupted with impulse noise. The comparison has been made experimentally, using 4 test images and 3 types of impulse noise. The results have been evaluated by consideration of quadratic errors in the Munsell space as well as by comparing their subjective quality.

This paper presents an overview of an 'Inspection and Control' package to perform automatic quality control of industrial components, specifically electronic boards. This application has grown out of a set of tools designed initially to aid the development of Point Distribution Models (PDM's) [1,2,3,5,7,12] pioneered at the Wolfson image Analysis Unit in Manchester. These models are both generic and specific. Generic, because they can be applied to any image classification problem. Specific, because they aim at the full interpretation of the variability of the objects to be modelled. The underlying vision processing.techniques are based on statistical pattern matching. Two synergetic approaches have been followed. The system is trained to recognise the components from both their shape and their grey level appearance.
