Recently, imageprocessing.systems have been increasingly utilized within the paper recycling industry to determine the ink particle content of a wastepaper pulp sample. These systems are predominantly off-line systems, but on-line measurement capability has been demonstrated which could provide a new insight into the overall ink removal process. On-line system could be utilized to improve the removal efficiency of individual processes via parameter adjustments, or to reduce costs by the control of chemical additions to match the ink levels present. The system could also provide an early warning of potential failures in the process or dramatic changes in the wastepaper input.

A range image consists of noisy, discrete samples of object surfaces. Perception of surfaces plays a key role in range image understanding and 3D object recognition. In this paper a statistically robust and computationally efficient function approximation scheme for surface segmentation is developed. In the existing surface characterization techniques, surface completion is done after segmentation, using heuristics and rules to piece together parts of the complete surface. Our novel method generates the complete surface hypotheses in parameter space in one step. Object segmentation is automatically achieved in the reduced parameter space instead of the image space. The algorithms are tested and supported by extensive experiments on real and synthetic depth maps that exhibit surface coherence property.

This paper presents the work that has resulted in the SAT processor;a dedicated hardware implementation of a binary neural image processor. The SAT processor is aimed specifically at supporting the ADAM algorithm and is currently being integrated into a new version of the C-NNAP parallel image processor. The SAT processor performs binary matrix multiplications, a task that is computationally complex for a CPU with a standard instruction set. It can perform the matrix multiplication and thresholding between 100 and 200 times faster than the DSP32C that uses an in-house produced dedicated coprocessor. This speed-up will allow the SAT to process images of up to 220 × 220 pixels at 25-Hz frame rates.

Texture information can be used to segment images. One method to extract the texture information is to use certain links between the local Fourier transform of the image and fractal dimension information. When working with biological processes, the resulting images might not be truly fractal in which case classical methods might not give very robust estimates. To provide a more robust method for the extraction of the fractal information from certain images an integration is performed in the Fourier domain. The described method is applied to a few example images.

In view of this, a software video coding system capable of coding 144 by 120 pixel video at 10 frames per second when running on a 486 based PC is developed. This study proposes a new algorithm for cylinder and conic surface extraction. The algorithm exploits pairs of surfaces patches to generate potential curved surface parameters which are in turn clustered using an un-supervised technique. This algorithm has the desirable property of being able to work parse, as well as dense depth data, and avoids any restrictive assumptions that the data is presented in a 2D image format. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is successful even for quite complicated depth images.
