An essential part of image analysis is the location and identification of objects within the image. Noise and clutter make this identification problematic, and the size of the image may present a computational problem. To overcome these problems, we use a window onto the image to focus onto small areas. Conventionally we still need to know the size of the object we are searching for in order to select a window of the correct size. We describe a method for object location and classification which enables us to use a small window to identify large objects in the image. The window focusses on features in the image, and an associative memory recalls evidence for objects from these features, avoiding the necessity of knowing the dimensions of the objects to be detected.

This paper proposes a strategy for encoding an image into a database structure which holds all pertinent information about the image, namely the spatial regional location of objects, their statistical representations and certain texture classifications. These are then operated upon by a simulated annealing algorithm to make a decision as to which objects should be merged to generate the smallest number of possibly important areas. A Neural Network approach is then presented for applying this knowledge to a sequence of video images and of tracking these objects within the sequence.

To provide advanced robotic systems with the capability to share their workspace with humans, they must be equipped with an adequate security system. We propose a vision based security system that monitors an invisible but clearly defined, dynamically adjustable safety zone around the robot for intruding objects. A texture based stereo vision method is used, not requiring a time consuming correspondence search. Objects are detected when they penetrate the separation surface between the two workspaces. To detect objects in the separation surface, one camera image is transformed with respect to the separation surface, as if it would have been taken by the other camera, then both images are compared. Corresponding regions belong to objects on the separation surface. We aim at a hardware implementation to achieve processing.in video real time. In this paper we present results of investigations for the implementation of the correlation and image transformation in hardware and propose a suitable hardware architecture.
