Since the amount of data required to represent visual information is large, enormous storage capacity is important. In view of this, a method of compressing and restructing an image based on a single, major feature found in the image is presented. The proposed method is a second generation method based on the restructuring of the source file in a more compact form without loss rather on exploiting aspects of the human visual system. The image domain for the evaluation of the technique is that of medical images recorded in a raster array format by a magnetic resonance scanner. An initial contour for the spiral is based on the outline derived from the major feature of the image. Finally, the rest of the contours are created from the initial contour.

In this paper we present a segmentation algorithm for multichannel image analysis. It is based on a novel method that significantly improves the segmentation performance with respect to both homogeneity of the segmented regions and precision of the segmented region boundaries. The algorithm yields excellent results in comparison with other segmentation algorithms that are based on feature space clustering followed by minimum distance classification, as will be shown in some segmentation examples. The main idea of the algorithm proposed here is the iterative feedback of the knowledge about the analysed image that has been obtained from preceding segmentation results. It needs just a stack of feature images and the indication of the number of required classes for input data. Therefore, it has a broad field of possible applications, especially in multichannel image analysis (1), (2).

Both the transmission and storage of digital image requires considerable expenditure in terms of bandwidth and/or memory resources. image compression techniques used for such purpose are classified into two groups;(a) lossless techniques, and (b) lossy techniques. Such techniques produce multiband images in which redundancy exists in three forms;(a) statistical redundancy, (b) correlation redundancy, and (c) interband redundancy. The reduction of statistical redundancy and correlation redundancy within an image has been extensively addressed by previous studies. Hence, the present work tackles interband redundancy. This type of redundancy is analysed using two schemes developed for such purpose.
