The analysis of the trabecular texture of the bone through radiographic can be characterized in its mineral structure. This structure is composed by arches called trabecular. In this paper, some vertical trabeculae and horizontal trabeculae arranged in two groups corresponding to compression stresses and to tensile stresses are provided. In a study, a textured image that as a contrast more or less pronounced versus the number of trabeculae compared BMD (Bone Mineral Density), which enable to know the orderly loss of mass is obtained. In order to know this number of trabeculae, a gray run length matrice algorithm is utilized.

The need to reduce the quantity of data requiring analysis is a priority in any low-coast vision system. A method of achieving this is to extract the regions of 'interest' in the scene, as these usually constitute a considerably lesser proportion of the whole image. However, the interest of region is a problem specific measure. Thus, this paper presents a problem independent approach to directing the attention of a vision system to those regions in the scene which are likely to be of interest. The regions of non-interest can then be discarded thereby drastically reducing the volume of data for further analysis.

High rate algal ponds are simple, energy efficient, low-technology waste treatment systems, and now considered as environmentally important development in applied microbiology. Achieving optimum efficiency of such systems is dependent on the knowledge of the biomass of the algae and bacteria in the mixed microbial populations of the pond. This is determined by viewing pond samples under the microscope, counting the number and measuring the size of cells and using standard formulae to estimate biomass from these measurements. The current method used for this purpose are generally semi-automatic and slow because no fully automatic method has been proven successful due to the complex nature of the microscope images.

During the period of 1990 and 1992, Magellan spacecraft returned SAR images of Venus which revealed the presence of a large number of small volcanoes. People find it difficult and time consuming to count them. As part of an investigation at UCL into methods for automatic counting of these volcanoes, a correlation-based detection program was tested against synthetically-prepared 'ground truth' data. Preliminary results of this study were not satisfactory because the existing theory of correlation matching was insufficient to explain the experimental results. This indicate that formulae which described the correlation between templates and a scene, when the scene was not pre-whitened should be developed. In this article, a summary description of this extension to the theory and a comparison of theoretical predictions, computer-based experimental results as well as the performance of human observers are presented.

An edge-region model-independent approach has been used to obtain a reliable moderate over-segmentation of head magnetic resonance (MR) images. This method has scope for the use of domain-specific knowledge to refine the segmentation as an integrated part of a classification/interpretation stage used to detect target structures. In this application, the target structure to be detected in a head MR image is an acoustic neuroma. A two-stage method has been implemented for the interpretation/classification stage that is able to apply domain-specific knowledge to improve the low-level segmentation. This method operates robustly, identifying all of the acoustic neuromas in the data set.

This paper describes an approach to an object model for multimedia interactions. Multimedia interactions differ from common interactions in the requirement for sophisticated analysis of input data and that such interactions are usually time-based. They can be modeled as an extension of pure multimedia presentations (as we did). The ideas and concepts for multimedia interactions are subject to research in several computer science domains like visual computing, Artificial Intelligence, patternrecognition and image analysis. The proposed object model is a new approach to allow the arrangement of the results from different research domains in an object-framework to make them usable in a real-world multimedia toolkit. As far as it is known by the author, no other such approach exists. By extending the existing object model for multimedia presentations of the multimedia user interface toolkit MME, it is possible to smoothly integrate interactions into our system. The structure of the paper is as follows: In the first part, the notion of multimedia interactions is introduced, different types and examples of such interactions are given together with a glance at related work in this area. In the second part, the object model for multimedia interactions is presented, being closely related to the object model of MME. The remaining parts of the paper deal with a brief description of some interesting implementation issues and future developments both for the object model and the implementation.
