This paper describe a computer vision based system for automatic lace scalloping. The main problem other than scalloping path detection in real-time is that of coping with material flexibility. This problem varies depending on the material type and the complexity of the lace pattern. The vision system has to work with many different patterns and sizes of lace as well as tolerating misalignment. In order to satisfy industrial requirements two main conditions must be satisfied. To achieve a sufficient degree of automation, first, the river must be found without prior knowledge of the lace pattern being scalloped. A Fuzzy Reasoning Rule-based technique is applied to overcome the problems of material distortion. Next, finding the river location across the lace strip must be carried out in real-time. To achieve this, a novel approach called the Line Mapping Method (LMM) is devised to speed up the search for the river in subsequent frames. Several experiments have been carried out using lace patterns of varying complexity. All cutting paths across the patterns were correctly found. Experimental results indicate that the river path can be successfully detected in different lace patterns in real time, while coping with lace distortion.

Most soil properties being influenced by tillage appear to be related to soil surface roughness. Changes in surface roughness affect the exposed surface area, air currents, and air radiation. In addition, surface movement and storage of water is also related to the roughness of configuration of the soil surface. This indicate that the measurement of soil surface roughness and correlation of roughness with other soil properties provide a fast, one-measurement method of quantitatively measuring the effect of tillage on crop production-related soil properties. During the previous years, much research has been put into the development of relief measurements. However, the methods used generally have deficiencies. In order to overcome these deficiencies, a different approach based on trinocular computer vision is used to develop a relief meter. This relief meter will be designed to function well when used with artificial images.

In MPEG video encoding, efficient buffering and rate control is especially crucial for constant bit rate (CBR) applications such as non-ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) channels and satellite communication channels. In a CBR environment, compressed video data, which is inherently variable in terms of bit rate, should be throttled to a channel with fixed rate by managing the buffer operation. At lower transmission rates, or in the case of an abrupt scene change, a dramatic increase in buffer occupancy or a buffer overflow occurs and this may cause an interruption to normal encoding and consequent degradation of video quality. An intelligent buffering algorithm is proposed for preventing buffer overflow and for smoothing out the occupancy fluctuation. The algorithm exploits major system parameters which have direct influence on one another in the MPEG encoder. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been verified on an MPEG1 encoder.
