The system the authors propose here aims to establish an automatization of the data acquisition process from video sequences in sporting environments. All of this is devoted to perform an analysis of human movement in an affordable way. One has to take into account that if one is working with very narrow environments (e.g. sport movements and specifically cyclic movements), the main problem, that is shape recognition and interpretation from images, reduces the complexity and thus the analysis can be treated in an easier way. Under this condition, a database for the storage of graphic patterns aids the system in situations with a nonclear solution, and at the same time allows one to save the environmental conditions of the image sequence. These conditions can change a lot of times and can make the recognition process difficult. The authors have also used artificial neural networks for pattern association between patterns from the image, in some cases incomplete, and those stored in a database. This process will be preceded, of course, by filtering operations and typical techniques of imageprocessing.for improving the features of each frame from the sequence to be recognized.

The variety of signal sources and the wide range of analytical techniques pose a serious problem in the integrated setup development for biomedical signal processing. In this paper we present an integrated, personal computer based setup useful in a variety of biomedical signal processing.applications. We also present interesting case studies from VEP, IVS analysis. At the heart of the setup is a PC-AT486 with analog-to-digital converter (12 bits, 100 KSPS), serial modem and powerful, interactive digital signal processing.(DSP) software FFT Lysis. The configuration is interfaced with the NICOLET COMPACT FOUR VEP recorder, and spike-train pre-amplifier. The DSP software on the PC-AT consists of biomedical signal processing.modules for digital filtering, template matching FFT analysis, wavelet analysis, basic imageprocessing.and pattern synthesis. In addition to these the software consists of powerful statistical classification programs for principal component analysis (PCA).

This paper presents a sensing approach where phototransduction, multi-resolution feature extraction, scale-space integration and edge tracking are performed on a mixed (digital-analog) VLSI architecture in order to generate medium-level scene description. The proposed system is mainly targeted for robot vision applications where feature description is preferred to a set of raw or raster 2D images and edge maps. The Multiport Access photo-Receptor (MAR) is a CMOS sensor and represents the main sensory part of this integrated image acquisition system. VLSI also provides means to integrate analog computing, digital controller and DSP co-processor modules which define a powerful sensory chip set for focal plane imageprocessing. A current version of the MAR sensor which implements 256 × 256 pixels includes 16 analog spatial filters which simultaneously compute multiresolution edge maps. This unique 2D hexagonal smart sensor approach which performs up to 8.5 × 109 arithmetic Op/sec during the acquisition/filtering phase and 25 × 109 Logical Op/sec for scale-space integration allows high resolution image capability. It represents a significant improvement for passive sensory units in a compact assembly for computer vision applications.
