For many human-robot interaction applications, accurate localization of the human, and in particular the endpoints such as the head, hands and feet, is crucial. In this paper, we propose a new Local Shape Context Descriptor specifically for describing the shape features of the endpoint body parts. The descriptor is computed from edge images obtained from depth data generated by a time-of-flight sensor. The proposed descriptor encodes the distance from a reference point to the nearest edges in uniformly sampled radial directions. Based on this descriptor, a new type of interest point is defined, and a hierarchical algorithm for searching good interest points is developed. The interest points are then classified as head, feet, hands and others based on learned models. The system is computationally efficient, and capable of handling large variations in translation, rotation, scaling and deformation of the body parts. The system is tested using videos containing a variety of motions from a publicly available dataset, and is shown to be capable of detecting and identifying endpoint body parts accurately at very high speed. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a robust video watermarking for H.264/AVC using block polarity and AC correlation schemes. In the proposed method, the intra frames are used for watermarking embedding and protection. Block polarity is obtained using the nonzero quantized DC coefficienth 4 × 4 integer DCT block. Then, the selective block polarity of DCT block is used to perform the Intra prediction modes for 4 × 4 luminance block. AC correlation is obtained by adjusting the relative between the AC coefficients of these DCT blocks. Finally, one watermark bit is embedded into each processed DCT block. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to the attacks of cropping, noise addition, brightness, wind effect, and cloud effect. © 2011 IEEE.

The identification of bloodstains in color images is critical in some accident investigation cases. A suspected bloodstain segmentation method was proposed in this study. The algorithm transforms the RGB to the YC gCr color space after the image undergoes color histogram equalization. Determination of the decision thresholds (Cg, C r) is based on the color distribution of the sample images in C g-Cr plane. To accelerate bloodstain pixel detection, the transformed thresholds are used (Cg, Cr). After the bloodstain pixels are detected the fast 8-connected component labeling method is to formulate the clusters. The algorithm was tested by using the 75 images from accident scenes. The results show that su spected bloodstains can be detected successfully, and thus that this approach can be used as the basis for bloodstain identification in color images. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel two bit-transform sorting technique to get a better matching order on the lossless partial distortion search (PDS) algorithm. By sorting the level difference sets calculated from the approximate distortion between the two-bit transformed reference block and candidate block, the matching order can be computed to apply to the typical PDS. To reduce the checked pixels further, the initial minimum sum of absolute difference (SAD) is derived from the cardinality of the level difference sets among candidate blocks. The experimental results indicate the proposed algorithm reduces computational complexity by about 27% on average compared with the typical PDS in terms of the average number of the checked pixels for night benchmark sequences. © 2011 IEEE.

We consider the problem of exploring an unknown environment with a pair of mobile robots. The goal is to make the robots meet (or rendezvous) in minimum time such that there is a maximum speed gain of the exploration task. The key challenge in achieving this goal is to rendezvous with the least possible dependency on communication. This single constraint involves several sub-problems: finding unique potential rendezvous locations in the environment, ranking these locations based on their uniqueness and synchronizing with the other robot to meet at one of the locations at a scheduled time. In addition, these tasks are to be performed simultaneously while exploring and mapping the environment. We propose an approach for efficiently combining the exploration and rendezvous tasks by considering the cost of reaching a rendezvous location and the reward of its uniqueness. This cost and reward model is combined with a set of deterministic and probabilistic rendezvous strategies for the robots to meet during exploration. Experimental results suggest that the joint tasks of exploration and rendezvous are substantially improved by ranking the potential rendezvous locations based on the combined cost-reward criterion when compared to the ranking solely based on the uniqueness of the location. © 2011 IEEE.

Motion information is an important cue for a robot to separate foreground moving objects from the static background world. Based on the observation that the motion of the background (from the robot's egocentric view) has stronger correlation to the robot's motor signals than the motion of foreground objects, we propose a novel method to detect foreground moving objects by clustering image features according to their motion consistency with motor signals. Corner/edge features are detected and tracked across adjacent frames. The errors between the estimated feature locations based on motor signals and their actual tracked locations are calculated. The features are clustered into background/foreground using Expectation-Maximization on these errors. Labeled features are then used for pixel-level image segmentation with the Active Contours and Graph-based Transduction techniques. Unlike pixel-level background subtraction methods, the proposed approach does not require a large number of frames for background model construction, and does not suffer from accumulated image registration error for dynamic cameras. In contrast to existing sparse feature based foreground/background separation methods, our approach clusters features in only one dimensional space instead of a higher dimensional space, and there is no need to search for parameters in an affine or homography transformation space or motion trajectory space. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper evaluates the performance of different stereo formulations in the context of cluttered scenes [1] with large number of binocular-monocular boundaries (i.e. occlusion boundaries). Three stereo methods employing three different constraints are considered. These are basic [2], [3](Basic), uniqueness [4] (KZ-uni), and visibility [5](KZ-vis). Scenes for the experiments are synthetically generated and some are shown to have significantly more occlusion boundaries than the Middlebury scenes. This allows evaluating the methods with different types of scenes to understand the efficacy of different constraints for cluttered scenes. The evaluation considers mislabeled pixels of different types (binocular/monocular) in different regions (on or away from occlusion boundary). We have found that for sparse scenes (fewer occlusion boundaries) all three methods have similar performance. For dense scenes the performance is dominated by pixels on the boundary. For binocular pixels Basic always does better but for monocular pixels KZ-vis has the lowest error. If binary occlusion labeling is considered then the cross-checked version of basic constraint Basic-cc performs best followed by KZ-uni. © 2011 IEEE.

Four-dimensional (4D) 1(st)-order frequency-hyperplanar digital filters have emerging applications in computed tomography (CT), volumetric ultrasound, and light field processing for computer vision. A novel IIR architecture for real-time implementation of such filters is proposed, and two single-chip prototypes are implemented on Xilinx Virtex-4 Sx35ff668-10 FPGAs. Experimental results from the FPGA physical implementation as well as simulated 4D frequency responses of the two 4D IIR filter realizations are used to quantify the proposed circuits in terms of frequency response, speed and FPGA resource utilization.

A fundamental component of stereo vision is that of epipolar geometry. It tells us that the corresponding point of a pixel in one image is restricted to a line in another image. This constraint reduces both the complexity of finding stereo correspondences and also the chance of making incorrect matches. When a refractive surface is introduced, which is in underwater imaging, this constraint no longer holds. Instead, the corresponding point of a pixel in one image is now restricted to a curve, not a line. In this paper we investigate the impact of a planar refractive interface has on underwater imaging and stereo matching. We address the issue of 3D point projection in a refractive medium, including cases where the refractive interface is not parallel with the camera's imaging plane. A novel method for calibrating the parameters of a planar refractive interface in the local image space is proposed. We show how to compute the refractive epipolar curve for a pixel, which allows us to generate a matching cost volume that compensates for the effects of refraction. Our experimental results show that our new approach can significantly improve the results of underwater stereo matching over previous approaches. © 2011 IEEE.

SQL injection attacks, a class of injection flaw in which specially crafted input strings leads to illegal queries to databases, are one of the topmost threats to web applications. A number of research prototypes and commercial products that maintain the queries structure in web applications have been developed. But these techniques either fail to address the full scope of the problem or have limitations. Based on our observation that the injected string in a SQL injection attack is interpreted differently on different databases, in this paper, we propose a novel and effective solution TransSQL to solve this problem. TransSQL automatically translates a SQL request to a LDAP-equivalent request. After queries are executed on a SQL database and a LDAP one, TransSQL checks the difference in responses between a SQL database and a LDAP one to detect and block SQL injection attacks. Experimental results show that TransSQL is an effective and efficient solution against SQL injection attacks. © 2011 IEEE.
