Despite the large number of software tools and hardware platforms aiming to solve the problems that bioinformatics is facing today, there is no platform solution that can scale up to its demands, in terms of both scope and sheer volume. DiscoveryNet scientific workflow system is here extended into a service-centric component architecture that brings together cross-domain applications through Web and grid services and composes them as novel service offerings. Two case studies implemented on top of the platform, SARS analysis and microarray/metabonomics, are described.

At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, we are researching and developing scientific computing environments for biologists and bioinformaticists. Important issues for us are how to motivate biologists to use new computational technologies and how to best incorporate and integrate disparate computational resources into computational biology research. In recent efforts, we have focused on the development of tools that support specific scientific abstractions or models that may be used as cognitive computational frameworks for biologists. The specific tools allow biologists to view and organize their computational work along the scientific concepts and theories that are under investigation, the experimental processes that are being carried out, and the logical structures and properties of the scientific data being examined and explored. This collection of tools and their underlying framework comprise a system known as SysBioPSE (system biology problem solving environment)

Function is a dynamic property closely related to the conformational mechanisms of the protein structure in its physiological environment. Efficient methods and tools for predicting collective motions at the molecular level are becoming increasingly important for understanding and controlling the function of target proteins. The molecular motions of proteins in different mode types are determined in the present study using the Gaussian network model (GNM). Based on GNM, we present a system that enables efficient query and visualization of protein dynamic behaviors such as mode shapes and 3D mobility structures.
