Perhaps the easiest way to present the central theme of this article is to ask the following thought question: "how many people would it take to destroy the world?" By "world" in this context, I am referring to humankind. Destroying the world has been a recurring theme in novels and movies for many years. The end of the world is also an element of many religions. However, until this century there was no real belief that mankind could destroy itself. So, for most of human pre-history and history, destruction of the human race would only have been remotely possible through mass murder/suicide. This was hardly a likely prospect. In the 1800's mechanized warfare and massive production and transport of weapons and supplies became possible. This increased the destructive potential of war, but still did not make it a likely mechanism for global self-destruction. It was only in the 1940s and 1950s that we have achieved the means to destroy the world, with the development and massive production of nuclear weapons. However, developing this capability required a very large technological effort, which only resided in the hands of the large governments. Tens of thousands of people, supported by economies of tens of millions, were required to produce this capability.

Summary form only given. Over the past few years the popularity of the Internet has been growing by leaps and bounds. However, there comes a time in the life of a technology, as it matures, where questions about its future need to be answered. The Internet is no exception to this case. Often called the "next big thing" in global Internet technology, grid computing is viewed as one of the top candidates that can shape the future of the Internet. Grid computing takes collective advantage of the vast improvements in microprocessor speeds, optical communications, raw storage capacity, World Wide Web and the Internet that have occurred over the last five years. Grid technology leverages existing resources and delays the need to purchase new infrastructure. With demand for computer power in industries like the life sciences and health informatics almost unlimited. Grid's ability to deliver greater power at less cost gives the technology tremendous potential. Ultimately the grid must be evaluated in terms of the applications, business value, and scientific results that it delivers, not its architecture. Biology provides some of the most important, as well as most complex, scientific challenges of our times. These problems include understanding the human genome, discovering the structure and functions of the proteins that the genes encode, and using this information efficiently for drug design. Most of these problems are extremely intensive from a computational perspective. One of the principal design goals for the grid framework is the effective logical separation of the complexities of programming a massively parallel machine from the complexities of bioinformatics computations through the definition of appropriate interfaces. Encapsulation of the semantics of the bioinformatics computations methodologies means that the application can track the evolution of the machine architecture and explorations of various parallel decomposition schemes can take place with minimal int

The progress of computer made the analysis that was difficult in traditional technology possible. In gene regulatory network simulation to recreate and understand actual biological reaction, we build a reaction model and find the several unknown parameters in order to show the same behavior as actual. However it is difficult to optimize them because the scopes of them are logarithm scale wide and the fitness space is multidimensional and multimodal. We optimized it using distributed genetic algorithms (DGA) which has multiple populations. DGA showed better performance, if and only if the parameter of the emigrating operation is appropriate. Therefore we propose distributed and integrated genetic algorithms (DIGA) to reduce the cost to find the appropriate parameters of operation. We carried out some optimizing experiments on parameter tuning of heat shock response simulation of *** and several mathematical functions and inspected the characteristic of DIGA.

We apply and enhance the cornerstone theoretical fundamentals of engineering bioinformatics to complement nanotechnology. In particular, nanoengineering bioinformatics is examined and formulated as a coherent abstraction in cognitive analysis of complex inorganic, organic and hybrid nanosystems. We report the application of an entropy-enhanced frequency-domain analysis concept to examine large-scale genomic data. This ensures superior coherency for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Conventionally, bioinformatics emphasizes the application of statistical methods attempting to analyze large-scale data produced by high-throughput experiments including complex gene sequencing. It is illustrated that bioinformatics can be expanded to a systems-based perspective by making use of novel concepts thereby positioning bioinformatics to play a significant role in engineering and technology. It is our goal to evolve the nanoengineering bioinformatics to coherently analyze the genomic data identifying, qualifying and quantifying complex genes in functional biological systems. The ultimate goal for the application of nanoengineering bioinformatics is in the development of system-level knowledge in order to devise novel paradigms for discovering entirely new systems with superior functionality and performance. In contrast, biomedical informatics examines the data from a more narrow-focused perspective and focuses on data and knowledge integration to analyze the biological processes. To enable the integration between computational, experimental, stochastic and deterministic modeling, novel information-theoretical methods should be applied to guarantee coherent representation and possible evaluation from organic to hybrid systems. These methods must be robust and utilize incomplete and inaccurate information, sequencing gaps, noncoding regions, unsolved interactions, multiple modeling hierarchies, unknown phenomena, lack of information, etc. It is demonstrated that the proposed

Cellular networks are inherently complex due to their large number of genes and proteins interacting through non-linear feedback loops. The identification of cellular networks from large-scale parallel measurements from the activity of genes and proteins is a tremendous challenge in the postgenomic era, i. e. after the sequencing of the genome. Traditionally, this system identification problem has been viewed as a huge parameter estimation problem of an unknown non-linear system. Here we develop an approach where we approximate the complex system equations with a piecewise linear system, using a computational model of the cell cycle as a proof of principle. The modular and sparse structure of the cellular network makes it possible, to divide the model into subsystems, each having only a small number of inputs and outputs. As a rule, the subsystems operate as switches with or without delay. Since the cell cycle, as most biological systems, is robust against perturbations, the subsystems can be replaced by step functions and the main dynamical behaviour of the full complex cellular network can therefore be captured by the piecewise linear system. If other cellular networks are robust, sparse and modular, our approach of targeting a reduced system description instead of the full complex system, set the stage for not only a thorough characterization of the system dynamics but most importantly, it reduces the complexity of the parameter estimation problem.

This paper presents an analysis of the biological plausibility of utilising Boolean networks for modelling genetic networks. A number of Boolean network models currently exist which can mimic the development of organisms from their origin (i.e. fertilisation) to the fully formed species (e.g. human adult). They can also be used to model the development of certain pathological genetic conditions (e.g. cancer). In addition the paper reviews the first steps in the construction of Boolean networks that mimic real genetic networks. The papers proposes that while synchronous deterministic networks are the classical approach asynchronous or semi-synchronous updating mechanisms could prove to be a more viable alternative for modelling the development of organisms and important pathological conditions (such as cancer).

In this paper we address the mobile robot localization using some techniques borrowed from the computational biology community. The specific problem studied here is also known as the kidnapped robot problem. Our proposal is to solve this problem by string matching algorithms, which have experienced a large advance in the last years due to (for example) the Genoma Project. The paper uses three different algorithms to solve the mentioned problem and shows their advantages, such as the robustness of the results and the memory and time efficiency. These results are validated by real experimentation using panoramic images of indoor buildings, and compared and discussed with existing techniques that have been used over the same test-bed.
