the impact of digital transformation is becoming visible in every aspect of our lives. Digital transformation strategies mostly rely on disruptive technologies such as Internet of things, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. Blockchain provides decentralized, immutable, and trustless database distributed across all participants and it was initially proposed as distributed ledger for digital cryptocurrency. However, besides in the finance sector, blockchain technology is considered to be a major innovation enabler in various industries. the paper describes an implementation of a private blockchain using the Multichain open source platform with possible application to agrifood use cases such as food tracking and tracing, product lifecycle management, and counterfeit prevention.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are often customized to meet customer needs and, hence, exhibit a large number of hard-/software configuration variants. Consequently, the processes deployed on a CPS need to be configured to the respective CPS variant. this includes both configuration at design time (i.e., before deploying the implemented processes on the CPS) and runtime configuration taking the current context of the CPS into account. Such runtime process configuration is by far not trivial, e.g., alternative process fragments may have to be selected at certain points during process execution of which one fragment is then dynamically applied to the process at hand. Contemporary approaches focus on the design time configuration of processes, while neglecting runtime configuration to cope with process variability. In this paper, a generic approach enabling context-aware process configuration at runtime is presented. With the Process Query Language process fragments can be flexibly selected from a process repository, and then be dynamically injected into running process instances depending on the respective contextual situations. the latter can be automatically derived from context factors, e.g., sensor data or configuration parameters of the given CPS. Altogether, the presented approach allows for a flexible configuration and late composition of process instances at runtime, as required in many application domains and scenarios.

Microservice-based architectures (MSAs) gained momentum in industrial and research communities since finer-grained and more independent components foster reuse and reduce time to market. However, to come from the design of MSAs to running applications, substantial knowledge and technology-specific expertise in the deployment and integration of microservices is needed. In this paper, we propose a model-driven and pattern-based approach for composing microservices, which facilitates the transition from architectural models to running deployments. Using a unified modelling for MSAs, including both their integration based on Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIPs) and deployment aspects, our approach enables automatically generating the artefacts for deploying microservice compositions. this helps abstracting away the underlying infrastructure including container orchestration platforms and middleware layer for service integration. To validate the feasibility of our approach, we illustrate its prototypical implementation, with Kubernetes used as container orchestration system and OpenFaaS used for managing integration logic, and we present a case study.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the rule-based automation of business processes by software bots mimicking human interactions to relieve employees from tedious work. However, any RPA initiative will not be successful if user acceptance is poor. So far, variables influencing RPA user acceptance have not been systematically investigated. the objective of this paper is to develop a model for assessing RPA user acceptance as well as variables influencing it. We derive this model using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and extend TAM by RPA-specific variables. Our empirical validation indicates that the most important variables, which significantly influence perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are facilitating conditions, result demonstrability, innovation joy, and social influence. these findings can be used to derive concrete recommendations for the design and implementation of RPA bots increasing acceptance of employees using the bots during their daily work. For the first time, an RPA user acceptance model is presented and validated contributing to an increased maturity of RPA projects.

As it was mostly developed in a non-academic context, the literature on the blockchain often lacks of mathematical rigour. therefore, fundamental computational problems of this new technology such as consensus, Byzantine fault tolerance and self-stabilization can not be fully looked into. In this work we use the principles of distributed computing to introduce a topological structure with the purpose of facilitating the study of the blockchain. Our model exploits classical topological tools used in the context of distributed systems to describe the evolution of a blockchain. Different assumptions on the input assignments, number of generated blocks and latency of the system are considered in our analysis. Furthermore, we define a probabilistic structure to enrich our model and to add also a predictive capability.

Quantum computing introduces a new computing paradigm that promises to solve problems that cannot be solved by classical computers efficiently. thus, quantum applications will be more and more integrated in classical applications. To bring these composite applications into production, technologies for an automated deployment and orchestration are required to avoid manual error-prone and time-consuming processes. For non-quantum applications, a variety of deployment technologies have been developed in recent years. However, the deployment of quantum applications currently differs significantly from non-quantum applications and thus, leads to a different modeling procedure for the deployment of quantum applications. To overcome these problems, we propose TOSCA4QC that introduces two deployment modeling styles based on the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) standard for automating the deployment and orchestration of quantum applications: (i) SDK-specific modeling style to cover all technical deployment details and (ii) SDK-agnostic modeling style supporting common modeling principles. We further show how existing model-driven development (MDD) approach can be applied to refine a SDK-agnostic model to an executable SDK-specific model. We demonstrate the practical feasibility by a prototypical implementation as an extension of the TOSCA ecosystem OpenTOSCA and three case studies with IBMQ and a quantum simulator.

this paper presents Phoenix, a communication and synchronization substrate that implements a novel protocol for recovering from fail-stop faults when executing graph analytics applications on distributed-memory machines. the standard recovery technique in this space is checkpointing, which rolls back the state of the entire computation to a state that existed before the fault occurred. the insight behind Phoenix is that this is not necessary since it is sufficient to continue the computation from a state that will ultimately produce the correct result. We show that for graph analytics applications, the necessary state adjustment can be specified easily by the programmer using a thin API supported by Phoenix. Phoenix has no observable overhead during fault-free execution, and it is resilient to any number of faults while guaranteeing that the correct answer will be produced at the end of the computation. this is in contrast to other systems in this space which may either have overheads even during fault-free execution or produce only approximate answers when faults occur during execution. We incorporated Phoenix into D-Galois, the state-of-the-art distributed graph analytics system, and evaluated it on two production clusters. Our evaluation shows that in the absence of faults, Phoenix is similar to 24x faster than GraphX, which provides fault tolerance using the Spark system. Phoenix also outperforms the traditional checkpoint-restart technique implemented in D-Galois: in fault-free execution, Phoenix has no observable overhead, while the checkpointing technique has 31% overhead. Furthermore, Phoenix mostly outperforms checkpointing when faults occur, particularly in the common case when only a small number of hosts fail simultaneously.

Privacy on the Internet has become a major concern in recent years and is an ethical dilemma for Internet based applications. Social Sensing based Edge computing (SSEC) is a category of distributed applications in which privately owned devices at the "edge" of the network participate in data collection and processing. Traditionally in SSEC, it has been difficult to manage privacy without making a tradeoff with performance or accuracy. In this paper, we present Privacy-aware Edge computing (PEC), a framework that utilizes ring signatures for implementing social sensing applications with full privacy and without sacrificing data quality. Under PEC, privacy is managed by the edge devices without the need of a third party trusted authority. We evaluate the performance of PEC on a real world edge computing platform and through extensive simulation studies. the results demonstrate that PEC achieves a high level of anonymity with a constrained cryptographic overhead.
