In highly configurable systems, features may interact unexpectedly and produce faulty behavior. those faults are not easily identified from the analysis of each feature separately, especially when feature specifications are missing. We propose VarXplorer, a dynamic and iterative approach to detect suspicious interactions. It provides information on how features impact the control and data flow of the program. VarXplorer supports developers with a graph that visualizes this information, mainly showing suppress and require relations between features. To evaluate whether VarXplorer helps improve the performance of identifying suspicious interactions, we perform a controlled study with 24 subjects. We find that with our proposed feature-interaction graphs, participants are able to identify suspicious interactions more than 3 times faster compared to the state-of-the-art tool.

the cancer and the cancer mortality may seem the sign of the present times. this leads hundreds of scientists to handle the issue of finding significant premises of cancer occurrence. In this paper a set of data mining tasks is defined that joins the observed genes mutation with the specific cancer type observation. Due to the high computational complexity of this kind of data a Hadoop ecosystem cluster was developed to perform the required calculations. the results may be satisfactory in the domains of distributed data storage (processing) and the genes mutation occurrence interpretation.

the rise of Big Data and AI computing has led to new demands for Machine Learning systems to learn complex models with millions to billions of parameters that promise adequate capacity to digest massive datasets and offer powerful and real-time predictive analytics thereupon. In this talk, I discuss a recent trend toward building new distributed frameworks for AI at massive scale known as "system and ML algorithm co-design", or SysML -- system designs are tailored to the unique properties of ML algorithms, and algorithms are re-designed to better fit into the system architecture. I show how one can explore the underlying statistical and algorithmic characteristics unique to ML programs but not typical in traditional computer programs in designing the system architecture to achieve significant, universal, and theoretically sound power-up of ML program across the board. I also present a briefly introduction of the Petuum system based on such interdisciplinary innovations, which intends to dramatically improve adoption of AI solutions by lowering the barrier of entry to AI technologies via Automatic Machine Learning through Petuum. I show how, through automatable, product-grade, hardware-agnostic, standardized building blocks that can be assembled and customized, AI users can liberate themselves from the demanding experience of algorithm programming and system tuning, and easily experiment with different AI methods, parameters, and speed/resource trade-offs by themselves or automatically. To put this in a broader context, recent discussions about AI in both research community, and the general public have been championing a novelistic view of AI, that AI can mimic, surpass, threaten, or even destroy mankind. And such discussions are fueled by mainly recent advances in deep learning experimentations and applications, which are however often plagued by its craftiness, un-interpretability, and poor generalizability. Agent-based simulations are becoming widespread among scientists from different areas, who use them to model increasingly complex problems. To cope with the growing computational complexity, parallel and distributed implementations have been developed for a wide range of platforms. However, it is difficult to have simulations that are portable to different platforms while still achieving high performance. We present OPENABL, a domain-specific language for portable, high-performance, parallel agent modeling. It comprises an easy-to-program language that relies on high-level abstractions for programmability and explicitly exploits agent parallelism to deliver high performance. A source-to-source compiler translates the input code to a high-level intermediate representation exposing parallelism, locality and synchronization, and, thanks to an architecture based on pluggable backends, generates target code for multi-core CPUs, GPUs, large clusters and cloud systems. OPENABL has been evaluated on six applications from various fields such as ecology, animation, and social sciences. the generated code scales to large clusters and performs similarly to hand-written target-specific code, while requiring significantly fewer lines of codes.

Data workloads generate heavy IOPS and operate on large amounts of data typically stored in a distributed storage system. Traditionally, storage has been the slowest component of a data intensive system, far slower than the CPU and the network. though with the arrival of faster, persistent storage in the form of NVMe based solid state drives, the I/O performance has increased dramatically, yet the I/O is still slower than the other components in the system. But with the upcoming byte-addressable, non-volatile memory available in DIMM form factor (NVDIMM), this is no longer true;the CPU and the network might soon become bottlenecks. In this paper, we study the effect of using NVDIMM in a representative distributed storage system, Ceph. through experiments, we demonstrate drastic increase in CPU and network usage, by adding persistent memory to existing storage software.

the distributed Constraint Optimization Problem (DCOP) is an elegant paradigm for modeling and solving multi-agent problems which are distributed in nature, and where agents cooperate to optimize a global objective within the confines of localized communication. Since solving DCOPs optimally is NP-hard, recent effort in the development of DCOP algorithms has focused on incomplete methods. Unfortunately, many of such proposals do not provide quality guarantees or provide a loose quality assessment. thus, this paper proposes the distributed Large Neighborhood Search (DLNS), a novel iterative local search framework to solve DCOPs, which provides guarantees on solution quality refining lower and upper bounds in an iterative process. Our experimental analysis of DCOP benchmarks on several important classes of graphs illustrates the effectiveness of DLNS in finding good solutions and tight upper bounds in both problems with and without hard constraints.

Privacy on the Internet has become a major concern in recent years and is an ethical dilemma for Internet based applications. Social Sensing based Edge computing (SSEC)is a category of distributed applications in which privately owned devices at the “edge” of the network participate in data collection and processing. Traditionally in SSEC, it has been difficult to manage privacy without making a tradeoff with performance or accuracy. In this paper, we present Privacy-aware Edge computing (PEC), a framework that utilizes ring signatures for implementing social sensing applications with full privacy and without sacrificing data quality. Under PEC, privacy is managed by the edge devices without the need of a third party trusted authority. We evaluate the performance of PEC on a realworld edge computing platform and through extensive simulation studies. the results demonstrate that PEC achieves a high level of anonymity with a constrained cryptographic overhead.

the pre-exascale systems will soon be deployed with a deep, complex memory hierarchy composed of many heterogeneous memories. this presents multiple challenges for users including: how to allocate data objects with locality between memories and devices for the various memories in these systems, which includes DRAM, High-bandwidth Memory (HBM), and non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM), and how to perform these allocations while providing portability for their application. Currently, the user can make use of multiple, disjoint libraries to allocate data objects on these memories. However, it is difficult to obtain locality between memories and devices when using libraries that are unaware of each other. this paper presents the Unified Memory Allocator (UMA) of the SHARed data-structure centric Programming abstraction (SharP) library, which provides a unified interface for memory allocations across DRAM, HBM, and NVRAM and is extensible to support future memory types. In addition, the SharP UMA allows for portability between systems by supporting both explicit and implicit, intent-based memory allocations. To demonstrate the ease of use of the SharP UMA, we have extended both Open MPI and OpenSHMEM-X to support SharP. We validate this work by evaluating the performance implications and intent-based approach with synthetic benchmarks as well as adaptations of the Graph500 benchmark.

the BigPanDA monitoring system is a Web application created to deliver the real-time analytics, covering many aspects of the ATLAS experiment's distributed computing. the system serves about 35000 requests daily and provides critical information used as input for various decisions: from distribution of the payload among available resources to issue tracking related to any of 350 000 jobs running simultaneously. It evolves intensively;in particular, in 2017, the system received 933 commits, delivering new features and expanding the scope of the presented data. the experience of operating BigPanDA in 24/7 mode led to development of a multilevel self-monitoring alarm system. this ELK-stack based solution covers all critical components of the BigPanDA: from user authentication to management of the number of connections to its database backend. the developed solution provides an intelligent error analysis, delivering to the operators only those notifications that need human intervention. Cloud-based cyber-physical systems, like vehicle and intelligent transportation systems, are now attracting much more attentions. these systems usually include large-scale distributed sensor networks covering various components and producing enormous measurement data. Lots of modeling languages are put to use for describing cyber-physical systems or its aspects, bringing contribution to the development of cyber-physical systems. But most of the modeling techniques only focuse on software aspect so that they could not exactly express the whole cloud-based cyber-physical systems, which require appropriate views and tools in its design; but those tools are hard to be used under systemic or object-oriented methods. For example, the widest used modeling language, UML, could not fulfil the above design's requirements by using the foremer's standard form. this paper presents a method designing the cloud-based cyber-physical systems with AADL, by which we can analyse, model and apply those requirements on cloud platforms ensuring QoS in a relatively highly extensible way at the mean time.
