the use of distributed constraint satisfaction problem for the coordination of holonic schemes that include multi-robot systems is investigated here. the formalism needed to apply the constraint satisfaction approach for manufacturing problems is discussed and exemplified in a case study. An implementing solution is also introduced. the proposed method determines safe operation even in cases with conflicting goals, without using any centralized component.

distributed cloud applications acquire, generate tremendous amounts of stored information. the data associated with such applications are distributed widely in geographical terms. Replication services are designed to facilitate, support such cloud applications. A replication service aims to replicate data, select the most appropriate data replica from those available in order to minimize application access time. Current replica services can also exhibit an increase in data acquisition by clients resulting in slower data access. this paper proposes a Partial File Cache (PFC) strategy that minimizes the volume of data transfers under a limited cache space, provides faster data access simultaneously. Traditional caching approaches work well on networks with high latency, however, they can be expensive if an application only requires access to a small part of a large file. To improve cache utilization, our solution makes use of different techniques when caching, such as caching sections or parts of files. the system identifies user hotspots so that fit clients are selected for partial data caching to assist third party cloud storage sites. Results show significant improvement over traditional caching techniques when implemented in geographically spatial cloud environments. © 2016 IEEE.

Due to the rising demand for large-scale data processing, there is a growing interest in both batch processing, where large volumes of data are processed offline, and stream processing, where large quantities of streaming data are processed online. the dichotomy between these vastly different computing paradigms has led to the development of substantially different methodologies and systems. As there is an increasing number of applications requiring stream and batch processing, there is a need to bridge this gap and offer support for both paradigms. We introduce a new direction for the unification of stream and batch processing, which, contrary to other proposed approaches, uses a stream processing platform as its foundation and supports batch processing on top. Our proof-of-concept implementation of such a middleware layer, called Cyclone, offers the widely popular MapReduce programming model and translates MapReduce jobs for execution on the underlying streaming platform. Cyclone not only achieves a tight integration of batch and stream processing, our evaluation further shows significant performance gains, in particular for sequential and iterative jobs, which naturally arise in many applications.

the IEEE Time-sensitive Networking (TSN) Task Group has recently standardized enhancements for IEEE 802.3 networks for enabling it to transport time-triggered traffic (aka scheduled traffic) providing them with stringent bounds on network delay and jitter while also transporting best-effort traffic. these enhancements primarily include dedicating one queue per port of the switch for scheduled traffic along with a programmable gating mechanism that dictates which of the queues are to be considered for transmission. While the IEEE 802.1Qbv standards define these mechanisms to handle scheduled traffic, it stops short of specifying algorithms to compute fine-grained link schedules for the streams of scheduled traffic. Further, the mechanisms in TSN require creation of so-called guard bands to isolate scheduled traffic from the best-effort traffic. these guard bands may potentially result in bandwidth wastage, and hence schedules with lower number of guard bands are preferred. In this paper, we introduce the No-wait Packet Scheduling Problem (NWPSP) for modelling the scheduling in IEEE Time-sensitive Networks and map it to the No-wait Job-shop Scheduling Problem (NW-JSP), a well-known problem from the field of operational research. In particular, we present a Tabu search algorithm for efficient computing of schedules and a schedule compression technique to reduce number of guard bands in schedule. Our evaluations show that our Tabu search algorithm can compute near-optimal schedules for over 1500 flows and the subsequent schedule compression reduces the number of guard bands on an average by 24 %.

We propose parallel algorithms in the massively parallel communication (MPC) model (e.g. MapReduce) for processing large terrain elevation data (represented as a 3D point cloud) that are too big to fit on one machine. In particular, given a set S of 3D points that is distributed across multiple machines, we present a simple randomized algorithm to construct a TIN DEM of S by computing the Delaunay triangulation of the xy-projections of points in S, which is also stored across multiple machines. With high probability, the algorithm works in O(1) rounds and the total work performed is O(n log n). Next, we describe an efficient algorithm in the MPC model for computing the contour tree of the resulting DEM. Under some assumptions on the input, the algorithm works in O(1) rounds and the total work performed is O(n log n).

Visual pattern recognition is a key research topic in the field of image processing and computer vision. Texture analysis based on steerable Riesz wavelets is powerful, but requires computing pixel - wise operations resulting in a run time in the order of days when large volumes of data are processed. To overcome this limitation we propose a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) based solution. A standard CPU version is used as starting point for the development of baseline GPU versions. To further increase the performance, and to overcome compute and memory limitations we apply a series of optimization techniques, leading to five versions in total. the best performing GPU solution ensures a speed - up of 93x for the parallelized section of the application and of 29.6x for the entire application. Furthermore, we show that a higher Riesz order and/or a higher image resolution further increases the speed - up. © 2016 IEEE.

Communication about requirements is often handled in issue tracking systems, especially in a distributed setting. As issue tracking systems also contain bug reports or programming tasks, the software feature requests of the users are often difficult to identify. this paper investigates natural language processing and machine learning features to detect software feature requests in natural language data of issue tracking systems. It compares traditional linguistic machine learning features, such as "bag of words", with more advanced features, such as subject-action-object, and evaluates combinations of machine learning features derived from the natural language and features taken from the issue tracking system meta-data. Our investigation shows that some combinations of machine learning features derived from natural language and the issue tracking system meta-data outperform traditional approaches. We show that issues or data fields (e.g. descriptions or comments), which contain software feature requests, can be identified reasonably well, but hardly the exact sentence. Finally, we show that the choice of machine learning algorithms should depend on the goal, e.g. maximization of the detection rate or balance between detection rate and precision. In addition, the paper contributes a double coded gold standard and an open-source implementation to further pursue this topic.

Interconnect network plays an important role in high performance computing systems. And its manageability directly affects the RAS (i.e., Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability) of the whole system. the Tianhe-2 system located in NSCC-gz (i.e., National Supercomputing Center of China in Guangzhou) uses proprietary interconnect network, which includes 5,856 high-radix network router chips (i.e., NRC) and 18,304 network interface chips (i.e., NIC). For such a very large-scale interconnect network, it is a great challenge to manage (such as configure, monitor, and debug) the numerous network chips and its network ports in an efficient way. By implementing the in-band management with very few hardware resources, the interconnect network in Tianhe-2 system achieves a highly efficient network management. In this paper, we introduce the design and implementation of the in band management for interconnect network in Tianhe-2 system, especially emphasizing on several key features, including the set of achieved management functionalities, the architecture of network management, the format of management packets, the data flow and processing of management packets, etc. In this paper, we also evaluate the performance of in-band management by mainly comparing with out-band management scheme. the preliminary results demonstrate the efficiency of the in-band management for interconnect network in Tianhe-2 system.

the embedded and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors, that in the past were completely separated, are now somehow converging under the pressure of two driving forces: the release of less power consuming server processors and the increased performance of the new low power systems on-Chip (SoCs) developed to meet the requirements of the demanding mobile market. this convergence allows the porting to low power embedded architectures of applications that were originally confined to traditional HPC systems. In this paper, we present our experience of porting the Filtered Back-projection Algorithm to a low power, low cost system-on chip, the NVIDIA Tegra K1, which is based on a quad core ARM CPU and on a NVIDIA Kepler GPU. this Filtered Back projection Algorithm is heavily used in 3D Tomography reconstruction software. the porting has been done exploiting various programming languages (i.e. OpenMP, CUDA) and multiple versions of the application have been developed to exploit both the SoC CPU and GPU. the performances have been measured in terms of 2D slices (of a 3D volume) reconstructed per time unit and per energy unit. the results obtained with all the developed versions are reported and compared with those obtained on a typical x86 HPC node accelerated with a recent NVIDIA GPU. the best performances are achieved combining the OpenMP version and the CUDA version of the algorithm. In particular, we discovered that only three Jetson TK1 boards, equipped with Giga Ethernet interconnections, allow to reconstruct as many images per time unit as a traditional server, using one order of magnitude less energy. the results of this work can be applied for instance to the construction of an energy-efficient computing system of a portable tomographic apparatus.
