In this position paper, we present our interdisciplinary research into a unified account of profiling attackers for software-intensive systems. Our work draws on the principles from requirements engineering and criminology. Specifically, we show how a unified crime theory can be adapted to model the attackers and their degree of knowledge about the environment in which the software operates. We illustrate our approach through an example based on i* and data flow modeling, and discuss future research directions indicated by our preliminary results.

the extreme scale, complexity and performance variability of future high performance computing systems pose many new challenges to parallel programming models and runtime systems. the Open Community Runtime (OCR) is a recent effort for a task-based runtime system for extreme scale parallel systems. We have implemented the OCR specification in a shared-memory environment on top of TBB, providing an alternative to the implementation created by the OCR consortium. We have created an experimental extension that supports parallel accelerators programmed with OpenCL. We also have an implementation that targets distributed-memory systems. Despite being in an early stage of development, our implementations can achieve reasonable performance with some applications. We describe the main aspects of our OCR implementations and report on early experimental results on shared-memory and distributed-memory systems.

the increased computational needs in many sectors place huge demands on cloud computing. Power consumption and resource pool capacity are two of the challenges faced by the next generation of high performance computing (HPC). this paper aims at minimising the computing-energy consumption in decentralised multi-cloud systems using Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) when scheduling dependent HPC tasks under deadline constraints. We propose an energy-aware scheduling algorithm EAGS. To demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm EAGS, we compare it with the Cloud min-min Scheduling (CMMS) algorithm in different experiments. the simulation results show that our algorithm can produce energy consumption lower than CMMS by an average of 63.9%.

Low power systems-on-Chip (SoCs), originally developed in the context of mobile and embedded technologies, are becoming attractive for the scientific community given their increasing computing performances, coupled with relatively low cost and power demand. In this work, we investigate the potential of SoCs for realistic scientific workloads, in particular taken from the bioinformatics and astrophysics domains. We selected a series of parallel, computationally intensive scientific applications and ported them to a cluster of development boards based on low power SoCs. the performance results obtained for the different applications are reported and compared with those obtained on a typical x86 HPC node.

Energy preservation in computing systems is very important nowadays. A large percentage of the workload submitted to large-scale systems is bag-of-tasks (BoT) applications. Each BoT is a collection of independent tasks that do not communicate with each other. this type of tasks is used in astronomy, data mining and image processing. BoT load balancing has been studied in the literature from a performance perspective. In this paper, we study BoT load balancing from an energy efficiency perspective. We propose two load balancing mechanisms that are evaluated through simulation in a heterogeneous cluster environment. BoTs and high-priority real-time tasks are both submitted to the cluster, in order to represent more accurately the workload submitted in large-scale systems. Extensive simulation experiments show that by applying the proposed load balancing mechanisms, significant energy savings can be achieved with small performance degradation.

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) aims to describe a system with the help of a series of models. More abstract models are refined into more concrete models by model transformations that ensure that the information from higher-level models is retained in lower-level models. this reduces the effort required to build lower-level models. the quality of lower-level models is also improved because they are partly based on well-tested model transformations. A key prerequisite for MDE is the definition of formal modeling languages, for which metamodeling is typically used. Formally defined modeling languages capture an ever-growing number of aspects of the software development process from requirements to architecture, design, and implementation details. A commonly held sentiment in the requirements modeling community is that requirements elicitation techniques have received less attention in terms of MDE. We perform a systematic literature review to either refute or confirm this sentiment by exploring the use of metamodels in papers on five well-known elicitation techniques: Cognitive Work Analysis, Complex Adaptive systems theory, Contextual Inquiry and Design, distributed Cognition, and Emergent Knowledge Process design. the result of the survey indicates - within the limitations of the survey - that there is very little research applying metamodeling to the definition of these elicitation techniques.

the main objective of this paper is to present a real-time system to improve road safety through the use of event alerts. A collaborative community where users can share traffic warnings to help other users is here proposed. the method is based both on the verification votes of the users, and on their profiles and trust levels. Each user is assigned a trust level depending on its previous behavior. the proposal is based on the assumption that the system will be run in every driver mobile device. thus, smartphones are the connectors between users and the community, using the cloud, and between the system and the users, using audio notifications.

Multifunctional information and computing complex (MICC) at the Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (LIT JINR) is a sophisticated multi-component hardware-software complex, aimed at the wide range of tasks related to the processing, analysis, and data storage to ensure scientific and productive activities of the Institute and of the Member States. the main components of the MICC computing infrastructure are grid Tier-1 and Tier-2 sites of the global grid infrastructure WLCG (Worldwide LHC computing Grid), created for the data processing of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, the JINR cloud infrastructure and the heterogeneous computing cluster HybriLIT. An important tool for ensuring the smooth operation of the computer systems of such a level in 24/7 mode is a comprehensive monitoring of all components and subsystems of the Centre. To ensure the operational control of the MICC components, the operation center (OC) of the Multifunctional information and computing complex in the Laboratory of information technology has been developed. the main functions of OC are the round-the-clock surveillance of the state of the hardware components, services, engineering and network infrastructure. the work describes the solutions for software and hardware equipment, used in OC creation at LIT to provide a round-the-clock monitoring of MICC components. © 2016 Alexey O. the Internet of things (IoT) enables the passive collection of personal data at an unprecedented scale by ubiquitous devices built into our daily lives. However, IoT devices neither provide notice or collect consent as recommended by the U. S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fair information practice principles. IoT devices may, based on their physical limitation, not even be capable of compliance. Requirements engineers need concrete methodologies to identify, understand, and limit risks to customer privacy posed by IoT devices. We conducted an exploratory case study of the privacy policy for an archetypical IoT device, a SmartTV. We employed the Goal-Based Requirements Analysis Method to extract goals from applicable Samsung U. S. privacy policy documents and classified the resulting goals with the Antón-Earp privacy goal taxonomy. the goal of this research is to characterize the privacy protections and vulnerabilities posed by this example IoT device and its associated policies. In particular, we seek to assess whether data collection is apparent to the average user and evaluate the extent to which a SmartTV exposes users to cloud computing's privacy vulnerabilities. Our results suggest that: (1) users face increased risk of privacy harms from SmartTVs, (2) most data collection by SmartTVs is not apparent to the average user, and (3) many SmartTV goals further compromise user privacy by requiring connection to manufacturer backend servers.

Hardware Transactional Memory (HTM) is nowadays available in several commercial and HPC targeted processors and in the future it will likely be available on systems that can accommodate a very large number of threads. thus, it is essential for the research community to target on evaluating HTM on as many cores as possible in order to understand the virtues and limitations that come with it. In this paper we utilize HTM to parallelize accesses on a classic data structure, a red-black tree. With minimal programming effort, we implement a red-black tree by enclosing each operation in a single HTM transaction and evaluate it on two servers equipped with Intel Haswell-EP and IBM Power8 processors, supporting a large number of hardware threads, namely 56 and 160 respectively. Our evaluation reveals that applying HTM in such a simplistic manner allows scalability for up to a limited number of hardware threads. To fully utilize the underlying hardware we apply different optimizations on each platform.
