the successful development and deployment of large-scale Internet services depends critically on performance. Even small regressions in processing time can translate directly into significant energy and user experience costs. Despite the widespread use of distributed server infrastructure (e.g., in cloud computing and Web services), there is little research on how to benchmark such systems to obtain valid and precise inferences with minimal data collection costs. Correctly A/B testing distributed Internet services can be surprisingly difficult because interdependencies between user requests (e.g., for search results, social media streams, photos) and host servers violate assumptions required by standard statistical tests. We develop statistical models of distributed Internet service performance based on data from Perflab, a production system used at Facebook which vets thousands of changes to the company's codebase each day. We show how these models can be used to understand the tradeoffs between different benchmarking routines, and what factors must be taken into account when performing statistical tests. Using simulations and empirical data from Perflab, we validate our theoretical results, and provide easy-to-implement guidelines for designing and analyzing such benchmarks.

A main characteristic of event-driven architectures is that components are highly decoupled, which facilitates high flexibility, scalability and concurrency of distributed systems. this intrinsic loose coupling of components introduces the challenge to identify dependencies between the components, which have to be known to developers to analyze, maintain, and evolve an event-based architecture. the knowledge about component's dependencies is often hard to gain due to the absence of explicit information about these dependencies. Furthermore, assisting techniques for analyzing the impacts of certain changes are missing, hindering the implementation of changes in event-driven architectures. In this paper we present a novel approach to support developers in evolving event-based architectures by using model-based domain specific languages for describing changes at different levels of abstraction. the DSLs' models are used to support analysis of specific changes to increase the quality of the evolving event based systems architecture.

Massive graphs, such as online social networks and communication networks, have become common today. To efficiently analyze such large graphs, many distributed graph computing systems have been developed. these systems employ the "think like a vertex" programming paradigm, where a program proceeds in iterations and at each iteration, vertices exchange messages with each other. However, using Pregel's simple message passing mechanism, some vertices may send/receive significantly more messages than others due to either the high degree of these vertices or the logic of the algorithm used. this forms the communication bottleneck and leads to unbalanced workload among machines in the cluster. In this paper, we propose two effective message reduction techniques: (1)vertex mirroring with message combining, and (2)an additional request respond API. these techniques not only reduce the total number of messages exchanged through the network, but also hound the number of messages sent/received by any single vertex. We theoretically analyze the effectiveness of our techniques, and implement them on top of our open -source Pregel implementation called Pregel+. Our experiments on various large real graphs demonstrate that our message reduction techniques significantly

Cloud computing is a versatile computing paradigm capable of attracting a wide variety of applications. However, the necessity to provide a wide range of complex services led providers to establish mutual agreements to provide large-scale distributed multi-cloud environments. Providers gain the opportunity to compose service workflows that are effective and efficient, taking resources of their own competitors, and the capability to satisfy unexpected workload peaks. In this paper, we propose a reputation-based model aiming at supporting the service composition by considering measures of QoS collected by the measuring systems, and reputation measures collected with the customers by means of users feedback.

this report describes the culmination of the 13th installment of the "Adaptive computing (and Agents) for Enhanced Collaboration" (ACEC) track. ACEC focuses on collaborative computing that occurs dynamically among webaccessible software systems and devices. the articulation of these network artifacts must be controlled by adaptive, intelligent control mechanisms, sometimes realized as agents. ACEC has for over 13 years brought together researchers from multiple disciplines to address the challenges associated with effective, just-in-time collaboration. the track this year showcases papers that explore emerging models and design patterns for adaptive architectures for a varied set of domains such as robotic and crowdsourcing. © 2015 IEEE.

Efficient resource management is an important requirement for many process-oriented applications. Typically, work items are assigned to resources through their work lists. there are many reasons for reordering work items in a resource's work list. For process scheduling, for example, swapping process instances constitutes a mean to keep due times. At the same time, reducing the throughput time of the global process is typically not the primary goal. For process optimization, in turn, the implications of reordering work items on the overall temporal performance of the process might be crucial. In this paper, we investigate how reordering work items affects performance parameters that are typically associated with a first-in-first-out processing mechanism at resources. the analysis is conducted for single process tasks and for typical control flow patterns such as sequence as well as parallel and alternative branchings. It is shown that the implications on the global throughput time are less than expected, while the effects on instance-based parameters strongly depend on the control-flow pattern in which the reordering mechanism is implemented. the results are supported by means of a simulation.

the creation of novel recommendation algorithms for social networks is currently struggling with the volume of available data originating in such environments. Given that social networks can be modeled as graphs, a distributed graph-oriented support to exploit the computing capabilities of clusters arises as a necessity. In this thesis, a platform for graph storage and processing named Graphly is proposed along with GraphRec, an API for easy specification of recommendation algorithms. Graphly and GraphRec hide distributed programming concerns from the user while still allowing fine-tuning of the remote execution. For example, users may customize an algorithm execution using job distribution strategies, without modifying the original code. GraphRec also simplifies the design of graph-based recommender systems by implementing well-known algorithms as "primitives" that can be reused.

In order to achieve efficiency and effectiveness gains, concepts such as standardization and automation originating in the manufacturing industry are adopted by IT service providers. ERP systems are tools to implement such concepts in manufacturing companies. this research examines if and how ERP systems are used by IT service providers. To answer this question, an interview-based exploratory multiple-case study is conducted because only very limited findings on the topic exist. Representatives of 24 IT service providers and ERP vendors were interviewed. We found that ERP systems are used by the studied companies: 21 out of 24 use ERP systems. Seven selected companies are presented in greater detail: one that doesn't use an ERP system and six that do. We describe which functional areas are covered by their ERP systems and which ones are covered by other application systems. For instance, all of the six companies use the material management module of their ERP system, but four out of five cases used a non-ERP standard application system for ticketing. Finally, we found no case that used traditional production and planning capabilities of ERP systems as suggested by previous design science work.

this track started with the first Cloud computing session in WETICE2009 with the observation that the cloud computing evolution depends on research efforts from the infrastructure providers creating next generation hardware that is service friendly, service developers that embed business service intelligence in the network to create distributed business workflow execution, assure service delivery on a massive scale with global interoperability while dealing with non-functional requirements such as security, availability, performance, compliance, cost and fluctuations both in resources and workloads. It was pointed out that the architecture and evolution of the cloud is increasing data enter complexity by piling up new layers of management over the many layers that already exist. Current session proves the epigram by Jean-Baptiste (1849) 'plus ça change, plus c'est la mêeme chose.' Literally 'the more it changes, the more it's the same thing'. In this conference, one paper presents the result of the discussions started in these sessions in 2009 that led to a policy based dynamic workflow orchestration independent of the infrastructure orchestration which eliminates the need for moving Virtual Machine images and interfaces to myriad infrastructure management systems at runtime. the architecture is derived from the well-understood and time-tested distributed systems such as cellular organisms, human organizational structures and telecommunication networks. In addition, eight full papers and three short papers continue to make progress on current state of the art. Based on the papers presented in these sessions over the last six years, we boldly predict that we are on the verge of a synthesis of the thesis of current state of the art and the anti-thesis of increasing complexity to address scaling and fluctuations in distributed systems. © 2015 IEEE.
