The SCoPE@Scuola initiative was born with the aim to inspire curiosity in high school students about High Performance computing (HPC) and Parallel and distributed computing (PDC). The HPC/PDC world could be an interesting matter for students because is a necessary tool to solve challenging problems in science and technology and it provides context where a plenty of knowledge acquired at school can find a real application. In fact, the themes related to HPC/PDC involve a large range of knowledge and skills: from mathematical modelling of problems to algorithm design, from software implementation to design and management of complex computer systems. The initiative, begun at the end of 2014, involved several schools in the Naples (Italy) district, and has also been used for work-based learning activities and projects aimed to avoid students "dropouts". The results collected during all the last years make us hopeful that such initiative could be useful both to increment students awareness about the utility in the real world of all the knowledge acquired at school and to help them in their future educational and/or working choices.

In recent papers [1], [2] we introduced a novel approach to the deployment of wireless infrastructure by scalable, distributed, decentralised MIMO. SDD-MIMO is a novel wireless network architecture specifically intended for wireless broadband infrastructure whose aggregate capacity and range scale as service antenna nodes are added to the network. We previously considered the physical and engineering constraints of such a system [1] and produced a compelling deployment simulation of wireless broadband for an over-the-horizon transoceanic troposcatter link of 155 kms extent [2]. The key issue is how to achieve scalable broadband over a long range. In this paper we discuss the engineering and physical constraints from a practical perspective. We take a close look at how the beam-forming process works. We propose a novel definition of capacity expressed in terms of the correlation between the received and transmitted signals. We demonstrate through Monte-Carlo simulations that this capacity agrees well with that previously derived for cell-free massive MIMO [3]. Moreover, the Monte-Carlo simulation allows us to explore the fluctuations in capacity versus the size of the network. We show that the capacity per user converges to the theoretical value as the network increases in size. For the SDD-MIMO network work to function, one must also solve the problem of global synchronisation of radio carrier frequencies and information symbols. We show that a well known low-cost GPS technique may be used to achieve this goal. Finally we take a look at what is probably the main constraint of distributed MIMO: the communication of beam-forming information across the Internet back-haul. We present some preliminary results demonstrating that adequate throughputs and latencies can be exnected. © 2018 IEEE.

In the advancing ubiquitous computing, users are increasingly confronted with a tremendous amount of information proactively provided via notifications from versatile applications and services, through multiple devices and screens in their environment. The human's attention is becoming a new significant bottleneck. Further, the latest computing trends with emerging new devices including versatile IoT devices, and contexts, such as smart cities and vehicles, are even accelerating this situation. In such situations, "attention management", including attention representation, sensing, prediction, analysis, and adaptive behavior in the computer systems. are needed in our computing system. Following last years' successful UbiTtention 2016 and UbiTtention 2017 workshops with up to 50 participants, the UbiTtention 2018 workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from academy and industry to explore the management of human attention and notifications with versatile devices and smart situations to overcome information overload and overchoice.

Enabling ultra-low latency is one of the major drivers for the development of future cellular networks to support delay sensitive applications including factory automation, autonomous vehicles and tactile internet. Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 13 standardized cellular network currently optimized for massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC). To reduce the latency in cellular networks, 3GPP has proposed some latency reduction techniques that include Semi Persistent Scheduling (SPS) and short Transmission Time Interval (sTTI). In this paper, we investigate the potential of adopting both techniques in NB-IoT networks and provide a comprehensive performance evaluation. We firstly analyze these techniques and then implement them in an open-source network simulator (NS3). Simulations are performed with a focus on Cat-NB1 User Equipment (UE) category to evaluate the uplink user-plane latency. Our results show that SPS and sTTI have the potential to greatly reduce the latency in NB-IoT systems. We believe that both techniques can be integrated into NB-IoT systems.to position NB-IoT as a preferred technology for low data rate Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) applications before 5G has been fully rolled out.

In the last decade, with the significant growth of the calculation and data concerns over energy use and carbon dioxide emissions caused by the servers have increased. Various scheduling algorithms have been created all of which attempt to reduce the execution time of tasks and have not paid enough attention to reduce energy consumption. Other scheduling algorithms try to reduce the makespan and the energy consumption simultaneously that are known as the energy-aware scheduling algorithms. The algorithm presented in this article schedules the tasks with a focus on reducing makespan and energy consumption. The proposed method provides a new scheduling algorithm using four factors of communication between tasks, the distance between nodes, virtual machines' status and energy consumption forecasts to reduce makespan and energy consumption. The purpose of this scheduling algorithm is to reduce the displacement between the nodes and optimize VMs execution that using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) the best decision is made for task implementation.
