Challenge of graceful migration through upgrades and updates is a daunting task for process control systems. Issues confronted include aging hardware and software, as well as shortage of process experts with knowledge of vintage control systems. We offer techniques and solutions for graceful evolution to current generation control system. Our approach covers entire system including HMI, Controller, I/O and Field Interface Layers. We showcase stepwise implementation approach while addressing the concerns. We also provide cost-benefit analysis and pre-requisites for choosing specific evolution path.

The next generation of Smart City and Industry 4.0 applications will be geographically distributed, heterogeneous, co-evolving software ecosystems. significantly more sophisticated than the current Enterprise or Cloud compute environments. To be economically sustainable and achieve solution longevity, these software ecosystems.must be operationally simple, cost effective to maintain over extended periods of time, and able to cost effectively adapt to both changing environmental conditions and service requirements. This paper presents the BRAIN-IoT Federation, a distributed and highly modular federated environment that addresses these sustainability, longevity and adaptability challenges by leveraging OSGi - the Open Standard for Software Modularity. With a focus on Operational simplicity, BRAIN-IoT federation enables the dynamic deployment, orchestration and monitoring of distributed applications and uniquely, automatically installing new behaviours in response to environment triggers and User events. To show how, through the use of OSGi components and standards, it is possible to build a software solution able to address all the challenges presented by the modern scenarios, in terms of agility and adaptability, this work presents an use case study related to the use of robots for last-mile delivery of parcels. Over the next few years this field promises to provide high cost savings and reduction of the environmental impact, allowing to reduce the traffic caused by parcels delivering. An exploration of how the BRAIN-IoT federation is applicable to such environment, enabling robots adapt to changing and diverse Internet of Things environments, will be presented in the paper. © 2019 IEEE.

The current energy transition leading towards decentralized generation and low emission sources challenges our energy systems. With multiple energy sources available, the complexity of households as energy systems.increases, while growing energy consumptions imply a higher environmental impact that, in the context of decarbonization, needs to be addressed. We investigate the potential for smart homes to lower their environmental impact in terms of CO2 emissions through a home energy management system (HEMS). This is achieved by adopting a model predictive control (MPC) to minimize CO2 emissions due to the consumptions of gas and electricity by scheduling the operation of time-flexible appliances and by changing the energy carriers to supply electric and thermal loads. The scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) program subject to constraints that reflect the users' preferences in operation and allowed delays of individual appliances, as well as main characteristics of different household technologies. Using statistical data available for German households and emission factor of the German power grid, we show that the proposed approach can reduce the daily emissions of a group of 300 households by up to 27% (i.e., 599 kgCO2 eq), while satisfying users' comfort preferences. © 2019 IEEE.

With the rapid development of cloud computing, more and more people choose to store their data on the cloud. To solve the problem of cloud data integrity, a wide variety of auditing schemes have been put forward. However, all of the above auditing schemes cannot be against the new replay attack. In order to solve this problem, Fan et al. proposed an efficient public auditing scheme to enhance cloud storage security against a new replay attack. In this note, we prove that the auditing scheme in the above-mentioned paper is not secure. We give the analysis process to show the malicious cloud can pass the auditor's verification even if it has deleted or modified user's data.

In modern distribution power systems.distributed Generation (DG) is performing a major role in supplying energy to the distribution system loads. Reliability indices of distribution system with DG is a key parameter used to evaluate the advantages of adding such DG to the distribution system. Distribution system reliability is calculated by using two main techniques analytical and simulative. In this paper, the effect of connecting Photovoltaic (PV) source and energy storage element to the distribution system on its reliability performance will be analyzed. Markov modelling is used to generate a realistic multi state model for PV and battery, the output failure and repair rates results from the modeling are then used in the reliability evaluation of distribution system. The overall system reliability is carried out using NEPLAN software package. Roy Billinton bus 2 Test System is used to evaluate reliability and cost indices for different case studies. The simulation results show that PV plus energy storage integration will improve the reliability indices of the original distribution system in condition of optimum sizing and siting of the PV plus energy storage systems.
