The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) is an earth science repository that specifically tracks research data on global climatic change. The GCMD is migrating from a centralized architecture to a globally distributed replicated heterogeneous federated system. One of the greatest challenges facing database research is the integration of heterogeneous systems.without compromising the local autonomy, reliability and transparency of the various databases that are participating in the integration. This paper discusses these challenges in the context of the design and implementation of the next version of the GCMD software (Version 8.0). The proposed system has been designed and developed using an object-oriented system architecture based on Java, RMI (Remote Method Invocation) and JDBC. This system enables other sources to be integrated into the GCMD system, with limited changes to the local system itself. This paper describes the components of the GCMD system and addresses the issues of heterogeneity, distribution and autonomy.

In any Active Geographical Information System the reliability of any results of queries, analysis or reasoning depends on data quality (up-to-date data with properties of positional accuracy, consistency and so on). A system is built for violation detection under Topo-Semantic consistency with specific checking and correcting processes using a SSRO-Tree structure for spatial data access. Results indicate that the developed Constraint Violation Detection (CVD) system is powerful when compared with popular conventional systems. Three kinds of errors are identified which lead to three kinds of consistency, namely structural consisteny, geometric consistency and Topo-Semantic consistency.

An algorithm for dynamically scheduling groups of tasks with arbitrary precedence constraints in loosely coupled distributedsystems.is presented. Tasks in each group are required to be executed completely or not at all, and must be finished before a specified deadline. If a newly arriving group cannot be scheduled at a local node, an attempt is made to distribute tasks in the group throughout the network. The approach consists of (a) a preprocessing algorithm;(b) a distributed scheduling algorithm;and (c) a compression algorithm. A complexity analysis of the algorithms is presented.

This paper presents an overview of the Real Time Markup Language (RTA4L). RTA4L is a XA4L profile which provides the syntactic representation for describing the semantics of real time data for exchange over distributed networked real time systems. For the basis of interoperability, this profile is described in the XAff. Schema language. This paper describes the background of this work and shows how the vocabularies are developed, and how it derives the extensibility of XA4L Schema in aiding the definition of data in real time systems.in order to achieve the goal of interoperability.

The design of complex softwaresystems.is a challenging task because it involves a wide range of quality attributes such as security, performance, reliability, to name a few. Dealing with each of these attributes requires specific set of skills, which quite often, involves making various trade-offs. This paper proposes a novel Model-Driven software Performance Engineering (MDSPE) process that can be used for performance analysis requirements of distributedsoftwaresystems. An example assessment is given to illustrate how our MDSPE process can comply with well-known performance models to assess the performance measures.
The effectiveness of a performant high-availability system can be measured by the transaction operations' execution speed and reliability metrics. The performance and reliability of traditional database interactio...

This article presents the results of developing a software for surface meteorological observation network storage. Multithreading was used to simulate a distributed cluster of information-computational resources during the software testing. This technology is used to create concurrently executing threads and is supported by practically every operating system. The architecture of the meteorological data network storage was designed and includes the following modules: coordinating module (monitors and displays computing nodes), database manager module (distributes meteorological data and executes user queries), client module (allows accessing the data), terminal modules (allows uploading new data), storage and processing modules (nodes for distributed data storage). The system was designed using platform-independent development tools (Java technologies), underwent simulation testing to improve the module interaction, ensure system performance, stability and reliability during processing large volumes of meteorological data.
