Better data management is crucial to the success of scientific investigations of global change. New modes of research about the Earth, especially the synergistic interactions between observations and models, require massive amounts of diverse data to be stored, organized, accessed, distributed, visualized, and analyzed. To address technical issues of better data management, participants in Sequoia 2000, a collaborative effort between computer scientists and Earth scientists at several campuses of the University of California and at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), apply refinements in computing to specific applications. The software architecture includes layers for a common device interface, the file system, the database management system (DBMS), applications, and the network. Early prototype applications of this software include a global-change data schema, integration of a general circulation model (GCM), remote sensing, and a data system for climate studies. Longer range efforts include transfer protocols for moving elements of the database, controllers for secondary and tertiary storage, distributed file system, and a distributed DBMS.< >

In real-time database systems. a transaction may not have enough time to complete. In such cases, partial, or imprecise, results can still be produced. The authors have proposed an imprecise result mechanism for producing partial results, which is used to implement timing error recovery in real-time database systems. They also present a model of real-time systems.that distinguishes the external data consistency from the internal data consistency maintained by non-real-time systems. Providing a timely response may require sacrificing internal consistency. The authors discuss three examples that have different requirements of data consistency and present algorithms for implementing them.< >

Traditional approaches to reliability and performance analysis become intractable when dealing with complex parallel and distributed processing systems. computer networks, and software for such systems. New approaches based on Petri nets, dataflow graphs, simulations and approximations are now used in such cases. In order to extend the utility of Petri nets and dataflow graphs, the authors present a decomposition technique that can be used to partition a large system into smaller subsystems. where performance indexes of the total system can be obtained (at least approximately) from the subsystem analyses. The decomposition reduces the computational complexity of analysis significantly. The approach (using marked graph components) is similar to the concept of 'near-completely decomposable' stochastic processes.< >

Presents a technique that uses coverage measures in reliability estimation for fault-tolerant programs, particularly N-version software. This technique exploits both coverage and time measures collected during testing phases for the individual program versions and the N-version software system for reliability prediction. The application of this technique to single-version software was presented in our previous research (IEEE 3rd Int. Symp. on software Metrics, Berlin, Germany, March 1996). In this paper, we extend this technique and apply it on the N-version programs. The results obtained from the experiment conducted on an industrial project demonstrate that our technique significantly reduces the hazard of reliability overestimation for both single-version and multi-version fault-tolerant software systems.

Grid computing system is different from conventional distributed computing systems.by its focus on large-scale resource sharing, where processors and communication have significant influence on grid computing reliability. Most previous research on conventional small-scale distributed systems.ignored the communication time and processing time when studying the distributed program reliability, which is not practical in the analysis of grid computing systems. This paper describes the property of the grid computing systems.and presents algorithms to analyze the grid program and system reliability.

A new reliability model is introduced for selecting the best software fault-tolerant (FT) design. This model uses a task graph technique that allows different candidate FT configurations to be analyzed based on the structure and organization of different distributed embedded systems. reliability prediction with this approach can be useful for addressing system dependability issues (i.e., fault detection/recovery processes and steady-state availability) in addition to ascertaining fault coverage (i.e., the likelihood of missing and/or false faults). The results of analyzing three different Simplified Unmanned Vehicle System (SUVS) FT configurations are presented. This work is described within the framework of the Conservative and Do-best FT design policies and fits consistent with a software development model for real-time control systems.that was introduced in earlier work by the authors.

Computational efficiency is a major concern in the design. The current implementation of the tool adopts a generic distributed network system. The design principles described in this paper are general and can be applied to various types of systems.

In a large scale real time control system, functions of subsystems.differ slightly although they seem to be identical. Functions change when hardware is replaced or when the function itself is upgraded. If the standard system is generated by merging the differences and is installed then to each subsystem, subsystems.become different with maintenance being carried out in each subsystem to fit its operational conditions. Furthermore, subsystems.are distributed in a wide area. software maintenance therefore becomes very difficult. The paper describes a distributed management for software maintenance in the Tokyo metropolitan area railway system. This management has two phases: generating programs for making maintenance easy and executing programs for increasing the reliability of the system. There it contributes to the effectiveness of maintenance and increases the reliability of the total system.
