This paper presents TPCC-UVa, an open-source implementation of the TPC-C benchmark intended to be used in parallel and distributed systems. TPCC-UVa is written entirely in C language and it uses the Post-greSQL database engine. This implementation includes all the functionalities described by the TPC-C standard specification for the measurement of both uni- and multiprocessor systems.performance. The major characteristics of the TPC-C specification are discussed, together with a description of the TPCC-UVa implementation and architecture and real examples of performance measurements

A new graphical reliability estimation tool, reliability Performance Module (RPM), is described. RPM combines the features of a powerful reliability tool, reliability Estimation System Testbed (REST), developed at NASA Langley, with the convenient graphical modelling and simulation capabilities of an off-the-shelf commercial software package, Block Oriented Network Simulator (BONeS), from the Alta Group of Cadence Design systems. In order to estimate the reliability of a system, the built-in BONeS graphics capabilities are used to describe the system, and the embedded REST execution engine produces a reliability analysis automatically. An additional benefit of this approach is that a detailed failure modes and effects analysis can be derived by using the simulation capabilities of the tool. The usage of and output from RPM is demonstrated with an example system. As compared to our current design process, RPM promises to reduce overall modelling and analysis time, provide better documentation, make trade studies easier, create reusable modelling components and subsystems. and provide the integration of reliability and timing analysis necessary to guarantee the safety of critical real-time systems. Future work will concentrate on producing a more seamless integration of the reliability and timing analyses. Additional planned enhancements include a distributed (parallel) processing mode, and availability and phased-mission analysis capabilities.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks suffer from the problem of "free- loaders", i.e., users who consume resources without contributing anything in return. In this paper, we tackle this problem taking a game theoretic perspective by modeling the system as a non-cooperative game. We introduce EquiCast, a wide-area P2P multicast protocol for large groups of selfish nodes. EquiCast is the first P2P multicast protocol that is formally proven to enforce cooperation in selfish environments. Additionally, we prove that EquiCaat incurs a low constant load on each user. Research can rarely be performed on open platform based large scale distributed systems.which always consist of heterogeneous sub-systems.and heterogeneous hardware and software components. It is not also pursued to realize the integration of these sub-systems. highly reliable system operations and high productivity of application software development. Our solution is a Cooperating Autonomous Decentralized System Architecture which is an extendible concept of the conventional Autonomous Decentralized System Architecture. The new system architecture is a novel synthesis of four design principles: highly extensible addressing architecture, core communication protocols with minimal semantics, sophisticated network traffic control techniques and reliable communication control mechanism. The current implementation provides both flexibility and high reliability for integrating heterogeneous sub-systems. and it has been proven in several commercial systems.< >

The design of complex software systems.is a challenging task because it involves a wide range of quality attributes such as security, performance, reliability, to name a few. Dealing with each of these attributes requires specific set of skills, which quite often, involves making various trade-offs. This paper proposes a novel Model-Driven software Performance Engineering (MDSPE) process that can be used for performance analysis requirements of distributed software systems. An example assessment is given to illustrate how our MDSPE process can comply with well-known performance models to assess the performance measures.

Summary form only given. Mechatronic systems.request for high reliability, especially in the context of time where mostly hard real-time capabilities are mandatory. May be even stronger requirements regard the robustness against software failures and interdependences from erroneous tasks to others. We propose the concept of robust partitioning for reliable real-time embedded systems. The concept consists of two parts, memory space protection and time protection. Memory protection is realized by already existing hardware and software mechanisms. For realizing temporal protection, a two-step timer interrupt system realizing an imprecise computation concept is proposed: if the execution of a module exceeds a certain time limit before the deadline, the first timer interrupt is triggered and a backup routine is started to produce an imprecise result in the remaining time until the second timer expires. This time protection concept shows significant advantages as compared to classical approaches for single, parallel and distributed systems. We give an extended introduction into the concept and discussed first attempts for its realization.

In a recent software development effort, an ARINC Research Corporation development team translated 500 system transactions into 11000 lines of code in Ada-compilable program design language (PDL). The team established rigorous data collection and review processes to collect and classify defect data and identify reliability growth in the PDL being produced. Two classes of defects for the coding process were defined: minor defects and logic defects. Data were collected by transaction, by defect type, and by lines of PDL. The defect analysis indicated that the learning process, and thus reliability growth, were different for the two defect classes. In addition, a period of reduced work load and changes in coding standards affected the observed defect rates for each class differently. As a result of this analysis effort, a database was established to track the coding process and to provide a basis for estimating various parameters of future efforts (e.g., time and cost) as well as the impact of process changes.< >

The RPC (remote procedure call) protocol is one of the popular communication mechanisms. It is very simple and transparent to write distributed programs. The RPC protocol user need not to have information on distributed environments and can easily construct distributed application systems. The RPC protocol reduces the communications overload since it uses messages to communicate. This paper presents a group communications to cooperate with the RPC. After creating a specific group by a user request, they can communicate with each other. A group RPC protocol can improve the reliability, transparency and facility of the classic RPC protocol. The group RPC proposed can be used in various applications such as video conference, replicated distributed database and distributed network management.

This paper proposes to use a logical hypercube structure for detecting message stability in distributed systems. In particular, a stability detection protocol that uses such a superimposed logical structure is presented, and its scalability is compared with other known stability detection protocols. The main benefits of the logical hypercube approach are scalability, fault-tolerance, and refraining from overloading a single node or link in the system. These benefits become evident both by an analytical comparison and by simulations. Another important feature of the logical hypercube approach is that the performance of the protocol is in general not sensitive to the topology of the underlying physical network.
