In designing the management system for Blue Gene/L, we adopted a database-centric approach. All configuration and operational data for a particular Blue Gene/L system are stored in a relational database that is kept in the system's service node. The database also serves as the communication bus for the various processes implementing the management system. This design offers many advantages, including the ability to use SQL commands to retrieve reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) information about the system. Information about machine partitioning and user jobs can be obtained the same way. Leveraging the database, we have developed a Web interface for system management. This management system has been successfully implemented and deployed in all 19 Blue Gene/L installations at the time of this writing

Due to the better utilization of computational and communication resources and the improved coordination of application subsystems. designers of large distributed embedded systems.(e.g., in the automotive domain) are eager to replace existing federated architectures with integrated ones. This paper focuses on the communication infrastructure of the DECOS integrated system architecture, which realizes for each application subsystem a so-called virtual network as an overlay network on top of a time-triggered communication protocol. Since all virtual networks share a single physical network, virtual networks promise massive cost savings through the reduction of physical networks and reliability improvements with respect to wiring and connectors. Furthermore, virtual networks support application subsystems.that range from ultra-dependable control applications (e.g., an X-by-wire system) to non safety-critical applications such as comfort systems. For this reason, two classes (event-triggered and time-triggered) of virtual networks are realized. Encapsulation mechanisms ensure that the temporal properties of each virtual network are known a priori and independent from the communication activities in other virtual networks. In order to ensure that the virtual network abstractions hold also in the case of software faults, each application subsystem possesses a dedicated virtual network with statically assigned resources at the underlying time-triggered communication service

As a basic reliability guarantee technology in distributed systems. failure detection provides the ability of timely detecting the liveliness of runtime systems. Effective Failure Detection is very important to J2EE application server (JAS), the leading middleware in Web computing environment, and it also needs to meet the requirements of reconfiguration, flexibility and adaptability. Based on the QoS (Quality of Service) specification of failure detector, this paper presents a QoS-enable failure detection framework for JAS, which satisfies the requirements of dynamically adjusting qualities and flexible integration of failure detectors. The work has been implemented in OnceAS application server that is developed by Institute of software, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The experiments show that the framework can provide good QoS of failure detection in JAS. © 2005 IEEE.

Component technology can overcome many limitations of conventional Object Request Brokers (ORBs) in developing distributed, real-time, and embedded (DRE) applications. Component technology has particular advantages for building large-scale DRE systems. The CORBA Component Model (CCM) enables the composition and reuse of software components and the configuration of key non-functional aspects of DRE systems.such as timing, fault-tolerance, and security. However, the CCM can introduce additional overhead to the runtime performance and code size of middleware. Hence, the overhead for using the CCM needs to be evaluated to determine if the CCM can be effectively employed in the design of high-reliability DRE applications. In this paper, we empirically evaluated the performance of OpenCCM, a Java-based implementation of the CCM standard, when configured with two Java ORBs: with ZEN, a real-time Java ORB, and with OpenORB, a desktop Java ORB. We measured throughput, latency, and jitter of method invocations for both ORBs configured with and without OpenCCM. We also measured the additional memory requirement introduced by the CCM implementation. We concluded that OpenCCM adds some overhead to both Java ORBs, affecting OpenORB's performance more than ZEN's. More development of the CCM may be necessary to bring its advantages to high-performance DRE systems. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The planning for cost-effective selective maintenance is essential to the success of a system. In particular, prioritizing the maintenance tasks in real-time can be crucial to a mission's reliability and availability. This paper highlights the important issues in the design of a real-time maintenance prioritization tool. The main objective of this tool is providing timely inputs for maintenance planning. Computational efficiency is a major concern in the design. This tool is based on previous studies and real-life experiences that were presented in [8] and [10]. The current implementation of the tool adopts a generic distributed network system. However, the design principles described in this paper are general and can be applied to various types of systems. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper we extend the model to cover two aspects. On one hand the case of replicated services/applications used in distributed architectures with fault tolerance requirements. On the other hand the possibilities of processes/tasks to restart/migrate on different nodes in case of distributed systems. This extension reduces the cost of downtime and improves the availability.

distributed Hash Table (DHT) P2P systems.provide flexible management of large scale distributed systems. They also provide efficient object localization given its key. However, they don't provide high level query languages to formulate such location queries. Recent efforts have been made to improve such querying capabilities. Nevertheless, most of the proposed solutions are based on special hashing functions or on an additional level of peers. This paper presents PinS, a P2P interrogation and indexation middle-ware for DHT based P2P systems. It improves data sharing in such systems.by supporting declarative queries and some facilities on data management without using particular hash functions or other requirements. Location queries may be conjunctions or disjunctions of conditions including comparison terms, and users may specify some evaluation constraints. Comprehensive or partial answers are provided. PinS supports pre-defined and customized attributes to describe objects and allows sharing objects with restricted access. Additionally PinS enables several query execution strategies and proposes the use of indexes to improve comparison queries support. Our performance analysis shows the scalability of the system. In particular, the complexity of the evaluation of conjunctive queries is independent of the number of objects registered in the system.

distributed systems.verification is one of the main issues in software engineering. It is considered as the major field of the formal specification techniques. However, many difficulties remain. In fact, the principal problem is in producing a coherent specification and providing a fully integrated semantics. Since formal methods are mathematical description models that try to give a response concerning the reliability of a system. It remains a hard way for the designers. Thus, we present, in this paper, an open environment for the integration of formal methods in the description and verification of distributed and concurrent systems. The system currently uses UML notation and provides rewriting logic, model checking, theorem proving, and simulation techniques.
