In daily life, humans demonstrate astounding ability to remember images they see on magazines, commercials, TV, the web and so on, but automatic prediction of intrinsic memorability of images using computer vision and machine learning techniques was not investigated until a few years ago. However, despite these recent advances, none of the available approaches makes use of any attentional mechanism, a fundamental aspect of human vision, which selects relevant image regions for higher-level processing. Our goal in this paper is to explore the role of visual attention in understanding memorability of images. In particular, we present an attention-driven spatial pooling strategy for image memorability and show that the regions estimated by bottom-up and object-level saliency maps are more effective in predicting memorability than considering a fixed spatial pyramid structure as in the previous studies.

A least-squares method simultaneously solves for the model-to-sensor-suite pose and sensor-to-sensor registration. The development is for a sensor-suite containing separate range and optical sensors. To address outliers and, more generally, match finding, a statistical method (median filtering) and a search method (local search) are developed. Sensitivity to Gaussian noise and the choice of initial pose estimates is investigated on synthetic data. Both of the matching methods are demonstrated on real data.

A hardware array processor designed principally for imageprocessing.applications, called BASE 8, has been developed. BASE 8 has the appearance of a fully parallel Binary Array Processor to the programmer, however it processes a large array in a sequence of 8 multiplied by 8 blocks. A BASE 8 processor is designed to be connected to and controlled by a minicomputer such as a PDP 11. It greatly enhances the performance of the host computer for some imageprocessing.algorithms and also provides a flexible hardware model for Binary Array Processor architecture research. We describe an efficient method of improving the performance of vision algorithms operating on video streams by reducing the amount of data captured and transferred from image sensors to analysis servers in a data-aware manner. The key concept is to combine guided, highly heterogeneous sampling with an intelligent Scene Cache. This enables the system to adapt to spatial and temporal patterns in the scene, thus reducing redundant data capture and processing. A software prototype of our framework running on a general-purpose embedded processor enables superior object detection accuracy (by 56%) at similar energy consumption (slight improvement of 4%) compared to an H.264 hardware accelerator.
