We present a platform for human-machine interfaces that provides functionality for robust, unencumbered interaction: the 4D Touchpad (4DT). The goal is direct interaction with interface components through intuitive actions and gestures. The 4DT is based on the 3D-2D Projection-based mode of the VICs framework. The fundamental idea behind VICs is that expensive global image processing.with user modeling and tracking is not necessary in general vision-based HCI. Instead, interface components operating under simple-to-complex rules in local image regions provide more robust and less costly functionality with 3 spatial dimensions and 1 temporal dimension. A prototype realization of the 4DT platform is presented; it operates through a set of planar homographies with uncalibrated cameras.

This paper investigates the use of graph-spectral methods for learning the modes of structural variation in sets of graphs. Our approach is as follows. First, we vectorise the adjacency matrices of the graphs. Using a graph-matching method we establish correspondences between the components of the vectors. Using the correspondences we cluster the graphs using a Gaussian mixture model. For each cluster we compute the mean and covariance matrix for the vectorised adjacency matrices. We allow the graphs to undergo structural deformation by linearly perturbing the mean adjacency matrix in the direction of the modes of the covariance matrix.

In this paper we present a graph cuts based active contours (GCBAC) approach to object segmentation problems. Our method is a combination of active contours and the optimization tool of graph cuts and differs fundamentally from traditional active contours in that it uses graph cuts to iteratively deform the contour. Consequently, it has the following advantages. (1) It has the ability to jump over local minima and provide a more global result. (2) Graph cuts guarantee continuity and lead to smooth contours free of self-crossing and uneven spacing problems. Therefore, the internal force, which is commonly used in traditional energy functions to control the smoothness, is no longer needed, and hence the number of parameters is greatly reduced. (3). Our approach easily extends to the segmentation of three and higher dimensional objects. In addition, the algorithm is suitable for interactive correction and is shown to always converge. Experimental results and analyses are provided.

The paper studies the problem of combining region and boundary cues for natural image segmentation. We employ a large database of manually segmented images in order to learn an optimal affinity function between pairs of pixels. These pairwise affinities can then be used to cluster the pixels into visually coherent groups. Region cues are computed as the similarity in brightness, color, and texture between image patches. Boundary cues are incorporated by looking for the presence of an "intervening contour", a large gradient along a straight line connecting two pixels. We first use the dataset of human segmentations to individually optimize parameters of the patch and gradient features for brightness, color, and texture cues. We then quantitatively measure the power of different feature combinations by computing the precision and recall of classifiers trained using those features. The mutual information between the output of the classifiers and the same-segment indicator function provides an alternative evaluation technique that yields identical conclusions. As expected, the best classifier makes use of brightness, color, and texture features, in both patch and gradient forms. We find that for brightness, the gradient cue outperforms the patch similarity. In contrast, using color patch similarity yields better results than using color gradients. Texture is the most powerful of the three channels, with both patches and gradients carrying significant independent information. Interestingly, the proximity of the two pixels does not add any information beyond that provided by the similarity cues. We also find that the convexity assumptions made by the intervening contour approach are supported by the ecological statistics of the dataset.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) is a relatively new imaging modality in the field of medical imaging. This modality of imaging allows one to capture the structural connectivity if any between functionally meaningful regions for example, in the brain. The data however can be noisy and requires restoration. In this paper, we present a unified model for simultaneous smoothing and estimation of diffusion tensor field from DT-MRI. The diffusion tensor field is estimated directly from the raw data with L/sup P/ smoothness and positive definiteness constraints. The data term we employ is from the original Stejskal-Tanner equation instead of the linearized version as usually done in literature. In addition, we use Cholesky decomposition to ensure positive definiteness of the diffusion tensor. The unified model is discretized and solved numerically using limited memory quasi-Newton method. Both synthetic and real data experiments are shown to depict the algorithm performance.

We present a new multimodal image registration method based on the a priori knowledge of the class label mappings between two segmented input images. A joint class histogram between the image pairs is estimated by assigning each bin value equal to the total number of occurrences of the corresponding class label pairs. The discrepancy between the observed and expected joint class histograms should be minimized when the transformation is optimal. Kullback-Leibler distance (KLD) is used to measure the difference between these two histograms. Based on the probing experimental results on a synthetic dataset as well as a pair of precisely registered 3D clinical volumes, we show that, with the knowledge of the expected joint class histogram, our method obtained longer capture range and fewer local optimal points as compared with the conventional mutual information (MI) based registration method. We also applied the proposed method to a 2D-3D rigid registration problems between DSA and MRA volumes. Based on manually selected markers, we found that the accuracies of our method and the MI-based method are comparable. Moreover, our method is more computationally efficient than the MI-based method.

In many problems of computer vision we have to estimate parameters in the presence of nuisance parameters increasing with the amount of data. It is known that, unlike in the cases without nuisance parameters, maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is not optimal in the presence of nuisance parameters. By optimal we mean that the resulting estimate is unbiased and its variance attains the theoretical lower bound in an asymptotic sense. Thus, naive application of MLE to computer vision has a potential problem. This applies to a wide range of problems from conic fitting to bundle adjustment. For this nuisance parameter problem, studies have been conducted in statistics for a long time, whereas they have hardly been studied in the computer vision community. We cast light on the methods developed in statistics for obtaining optimal estimates and explore the possibility of applying them to computer vision problems. In this paper we focus on the cases where data and nuisance parameters are linearly connected. As examples, optical flow estimation and affine structure and motion problems are considered. Through experiments, we show that the estimation accuracy is improved in several cases.

Research on digital analysis of painting images has received very little attention. The exact nature of scientific methods seems to be antithesis of art. Nevertheless, several papers have proposed methods to bridge this gap and have obtained interesting results. In fact, some art theorists have pointed out the usefulness of specific quantifiable features in the paintings. This paper presents a method for identifying painters using color profiles of skin patches in painting images. Various color models for representing the color profiles were explored. Various implementations of multiclass support vector machine classfiiers were compared. We found that a weighted combination of several directed acyclic graph SVMs with Gaussian kernels gives the best classification performance.

Two related problems of front projection displays, which occur when users obscure a projector, are: (i) undesirable shadows cast on the display by the users, and (ii) projected light falling on and distracting the users. This paper provides a computational framework for solving these two problems based on multiple overlapping projectors and cameras. The overlapping projectors are automatically aligned to display the same dekeystoned image. The system detects when and where shadows are cast by occluders and is able to determine the pixels, which are occluded in different projectors. Through a feedback control loop, the contributions of unoccluded pixels from other projectors are boosted in the shadowed regions, thereby eliminating the shadows. In addition, pixels, which are being occluded, are blanked, thereby preventing the projected light from falling on a user when they occlude the display. This can be accomplished even when the occluders are not visible to the camera. The paper presents results from a number of experiments demonstrating that the system converges rapidly with low steady-state errors.
