Detection of weld defects is still done by the human interpreter. The problems of this process are subjective, inconsistent, labor intensive and fatigue of the interpreter. It is desirable to develop a computer-aided system to assist the human interpreter in evaluating the quality of welded part. In this paper, a real-time weld inspection system is presented. The system consists of three steps. First, extracting the weld part within the whole image by a fast algorithm based on the gray level, then the defect detection is applied on this part. Second, reducing the affection of the noise and making the defect more evident. A method to average several consecutive frames is used in the preprocessing.part. Last, detecting the flaw. A more effective fuzzy theory that is based on the local image characteristics such as spatial contrast and spatial variance is used to determine the existence of a weld defect. The result shows success of the system in detecting weld defects.

The CONDENSATION algorithm has attracted as it has robust tracking performance and potential of real-time implementation. However the CONDENSATION tracker has difficulty with real-time implementation for multiple people tracking since it requires complicated shape model and large number of samples for precise tracking performance. This paper presents two improvements for real-time multiple object tracking: the discrete shape model with a small search space and the competition rule which requires a small number of samples to track multiple people. We show that they achieve robust and real-time tracking for image sequences of a crowd of people.

This paper describes a pattern classification approach for detecting frontal-view faces via learning a decision boundary. The classification can be achieved either by explicit estimation of density functions of two classes, face and non-face or by direct learning of a classification function (decision boundary). The latter is a more effective approach, when the number of training available examples is small, compared to the dimensionality of image space. The proposed method consists of a implicit modeling of both face and near-face classes using Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and a subsequent classification stage based on the decision boundary estimation using Support Vector Machine (SVM). Multiple nonlinear SVMs are trained for local subspaces, considering the general non-Gaussian and multi-modal characteristic of face space. This parallelization of SVMs reduces computational cost of on-line classification, since the locally trained SVM has small number of support vectors compared to the SVM trained on entire data space. We showed that the proposed algorithm is superior to the simple combination of ICA and SVM, both in accuracy and computational burden.
