We have developed a fast robust 3D head tracking system based on rendering a texture-mapped cylinder. In order to handle the variable frame-to-frame motion changes, the system uses motion templates, which adapt to the current size of the motion increment. The relationship between measurable pixel energy and tracking error is used to design the parameters of the adaptive algorithm. To speedup processing.and decouple rotational and translational motion, 2D positional information of the neckline is utilize. The confidence at each point is computed based on the amount of information used in creating the texture map and re-rendering the face. The system can also handle large out-of-plane rotations via additional templates. If the tracker fails, it can recover using an independent face detection routine. We compare the results of our approach with the extensive results of a closely related technique.

Variations in illumination can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of an object in an image. In this paper we propose how to deal with illumination variations in eigenspace methods. We demonstrate that the eigenimages obtained by a training set under a single illumination condition (ambient light) can be used for recognition of objects taken under different illumination conditions. The major idea is to incorporate a set of gradient based filter banks into the eigenspace recognition framework. This can be achieved since the eigenimage coefficients are invariant for linearly filtered images (input and eigenimages). To achieve further illumination insensitivity we devised a robust procedure for coefficient recovery. The proposed approach has been extensively evaluated on a set of 2160 images and the results were compared to other approaches.

This paper presents a novel approach for recognizing and interpreting dimensions in engineering drawings. It starts by detecting potential dimension frames, each comprising only the line and text components of a dimension, then verifies them by detecting the dimension symbols. By removing the prerequisite of symbol recognition from detection of dimension sets, our method is capable of handling low quality drawings. We also propose a reconstruction algorithm for rebuilding the drawing entities based on the recognized dimension annotations. A coordinate grid structure is introduced to represent and analyze two-dimensional spatial constraints between entities; this simplifies and unifies the process of rectifying deviations of entity dimensions induced during scanning and vectorization.

This paper introduces a new application of pattern recognition techniques to the problem of automatic identification of secondary flow patterns in heated curved rectangular channels. The proposed algorithm is based on two observations. Firstly, in the study of secondary flow patterns, it is found that a smaller pair of secondary vortices is generated when the flowrate of a fluid in a curved passage is beyond certain threshold value. Secondly, humans can easily identify the centre of the vortex by visual inspection. This paper proposes an algorithm that can automatically realise the existence and location of such vortices. Such information can be used to provide a feedback signal for the control of the flow within the channel.

This paper describes a machine learning approach for visual object detection which is capable of processing.images extremely rapidly and achieving high detection rates. This work is distinguished by three key contributions. The first is the introduction of a new image representation called the "integral image" which allows the features used by our detector to be computed very quickly. The second is a learning algorithm, based on AdaBoost, which selects a small number of critical visual features from a larger set and yields extremely efficient classifiers. The third contribution is a method for combining increasingly more complex classifiers in a "cascade" which allows background regions of the image to be quickly discarded while spending more computation on promising object-like regions. The cascade can be viewed as an object specific focus-of-attention mechanism which unlike previous approaches provides statistical guarantees that discarded regions are unlikely to contain the object of interest. In the domain of face detection the system yields detection rates comparable to the best previous systems. Used in real-time applications, the detector runs at 15 frames per second without resorting to image differencing or skin color detection.

images of outdoor scenes captured in bad weather suffer from poor contrast. Under bad weather conditions, the light reaching a camera is severely scattered by the atmosphere. The resulting decay in contrast varies across the scene and is exponential in the depths of scene points. Therefore, traditional space invariant image processing.techniques are not sufficient to remove weather effects from images. In this paper, we present a fast physics-based method to compute scene structure and hence restore contrast of the scene from two or more images taken in bad weather In contrast to previous techniques, our method does not require any a priori weather-specific or scene information, and is effective under a wide range of weather conditions including haze, mist, fog and other aerosols. Further, our method can be applied to gray-scale, RGB color, multi-spectral and even IR images. We also extend the technique to restore contrast of scenes with moving objects, captured using a video camera.

This paper presents a natural extension of the newly introduced "anti-face" method to event detection, both in the image and in the feature domains. In the case of the image domain (video sequences) we create spatio temporal templates by stacking the video frames, and the detection is performed on these templates. In order to recognize the motion of features in a video sequence, the spatial locations of the features are modulated in time, thus creating a one-dimensional vector which re resents the event The following applications of anti-sequences are presented 1) Detection of an object under 3D rotations in a video sequence simulated from the COIL database, 2) Visual speech recognition of spoken words, and 3) recognition of symbols sketched with a laser pointer. The resulting detection algorithm is very fast, and is robust enough to work on small images. Also, it is capable of discriminating the desired event-template from arbitrary events, and not only events in a "negative training set".

Performance evaluations in probabilistic information retrieval are often presented as precision-recall or precision-scope graphs avoiding the otherwise dominating effect of the embedding irrelevant fraction. However, precision and recall values as such offer an incomplete overview of the information retrieval system under study: information about system parameters like generality (the embedding of the relevant fraction), random performance, and the effect of varying the scope is missed In this paper two cluster performance graphs are presented In those cases where complete ground truth is available (both cluster size and database size) the cluster precision-recall (Cluster PR) graph and the generality-precision=recall graph are proposed.

In this paper we describe techniques for 3D textured model construction of urban areas using acquisition devices such as intensity cameras, as well as 2D laser scanner. Our experimental set up consists of a truck equipped with one camera and two fast, inexpensive 2D laser scanner, traveling on city streets under normal traffic conditions. The horizontal laser scans are used to determine the approximate component of motion along the movement of the acquisition vehicle. The vertical scanner is used to build 3D models of the facade of the buildings. To improve the accuracy of localization of the truck and hence our resulting 3D models of the city, two different methods are developed and compared: the first method employs a correlation technique and the second method is based on Markov Monte Carlo localization. Both techniques use digital road maps and aerial photographs in conjunction with laser scans. A fairly accurate textured, 3D model of downtown area has been acquired in a matter of few minutes, limited only by traffic conditions during the data acquisition phase.

A bidirectional texture function (BTF) describes image texture as it varies with viewing and illumination direction. Many real world surfaces such as skin, fur, gravel, etc. exhibit fine-scale geometric surface detail. Accordingly, variations in appearance with viewing and illumination direction may be quite complex due to local foreshortening, masking and shadowing. Representations of surface texture that support robust recognition must account for these effects. We construct a representation which captures the underlying statistical distribution of features in the image texture as well as the variations in this distribution with viewing and illumination direction. The representation combines clustering to learn characteristic image features and principle components analysis to reduce the space of feature histograms. This representation is based on a core image set as determined by a quantitative evaluation of importance of individual images in the overall representation. The result is a compact representation and a recognition method where a single novel image of unknown viewing and illumination direction can be classified efficiently. The CUReT (Columbia-Utrecht reflectance and texture) database is used as a test set for evaluation of these methods.
