The paper is devoted to the problem of fuzzy patterns recognition. The most universal case when both images and clusters are fuzzy sets is considered. Basing on the features of level sets an idea of linearly separable fuzzy clusters is introduced. An algorithm proposed for deriving a decision making function is based on the technique used originally for crisp case. It allows by solving a single system of linear inequations to derive borders of a number of level sets of clusters. These borders being a decision functions for each level respectively produce at the same time matching functions for fuzzy clusters. All algorithms are computer-oriented and can be implemented for automatic recognition of fuzzy patterns.

A new approach to computer supported recognition of melanoma and naevocytic naevi based on high resolution skin surface profiles is presented. Profiles are generated by sampling an area of 4 x 4 mm(2) at a resolution of 125 sample points per mm with a laser profilometer at a vertical resolution of 0.1 mu m. With image analysis algorithms Haralick's texture parameters, Fourier features and features based on fractal analysis are extracted. In order to improve classification performance, a subsequent feature selection process is applied to determine the best possible subset of features. Genetic algorithms are optimized for the feature selection process, and results of different approaches are compared. As quality measure for feature subsets, the error rate of the nearest neighbor classifier estimated with the leaving-one-out method is used. In comparison to heuristic strategies and greedy algorithms, genetic algorithms show the best results for the feature selection problem. After feature selection, several architectures of feed forward neural networks with error back-propagation are evaluated. Classification performance of the neural classifier is optimized using different topologies, learning parameters and pruning algorithms. The best neural classifier achieved an error rate of 4.5% and was found after network pruning. The best result in all with an error rate of 2.3% was obtained with the nearest neighbor classifier.

Real-time hardware developed for imageprocessing.applications such as image enhancement, segmentation, image registration, patternrecognition, etc. can not be thoroughly debugged and analyzed for its performance by using conventional test equipment. To cite an example, the hardware for image registration may be failing intermittently or the registration point may be drifting even when the scene and the sensor are static. There is no way of knowing whether the malfunction is due to input data or any noise glitches. Therefore, for evaluating real-time imageprocessing.hardware, it is necessary to acquire image sequence data in real-time and also capture the status of the tracker in real-time. Test equipment like logic analyzer, microprocessor development systems do not have the capability to acquire and store image sequences. General purpose data acquisition systems on the IBM PC compatible computer are not suitable as the data rate required is about 500 kbytes/sec. the design of an interface card for achieving this data rate using ieee-488 (GPIB) interface is described. Results on the evaluation of imageprocessing.hardware using this card are also presented.

The technique utilises the behaviour of the signal's instantaneous frequency, which is the time derivative of the temporal phase.
