A fault-tolerant mutual exclusion algorithm for distributed systems.is presented. The algorithm uses a distributed queue strategy and maintains alternative paths at each site to provide a high degree of fault tolerance. However, owing to these alternative paths, the algorithm must use reverse messages to avoid the occurrence of directed cycles, which may form when the direction of edges is reversed after the token passes through. If there is no alternative path, the total number of the messages exchanged is O(2 × log N) in light traffic and two messages in heavy traffic;however, in this case the system cannot tolerate even a single communication link or site failure. If there are alternative paths between sites, the system can achieve a higher degree of fault tolerance at the expense of increased message traffic (owing to reverse messages). Thus, there is a tradeoff between efficiency and reliability, and a system can be designed to balance these two criteria properly. A recovery procedure for restoring a recovering site consistently into the system is also presented.

In this paper, we revisit the problem of software fault tolerance in distributed systems. In particular, we propose an extension of a message-driven confidence-driven (MDCD) protocol we have developed for error containment and recovery in a particular type of distributed embedded system. More specifically we augment the original MDCD protocol by introducing the method of "fine-grained confidence adjustment," which enables us to remove the architectural restrictions. The dynamic nature of the MDCD approach gives it a number of desirable characteristics. First, this approach does not impose any restrictions on interactions among application software components or require costly message-exchange based process coordination/synchronization. second, the algorithms allow redundancies to be applied only to low-confidence or critical interacting software components in a distributed system, permitting flexible realization of software fault tolerance. Finally, the dynamic error containment and recovery mechanisms are transparent to the application and ready to be implemented by generic middleware.

ROSE, a modular distributed operating system that provides support for building reliable applications, is designed and implemented. Failure detection capabilities are provided by a failure detection server. Configuration objects can be used to capture the relationship among multiple processes that cooperate to replicate certain resources. Replicated address space (RAS) objects, whose content is accessible with a high probability despite hardware failures, can be used to increase data availability. Finally, a resistant process (RP) abstraction allows user processes to survive hardware failures with minimal interruption. Two different implementations of RP are provided: one checkpoints the information about its state in an RAS object periodically;the other uses replicated execution by executing the same code in different nodes at the same time.

The authors present a novel formal approach to proving the correctness of distributed systems.of replicated processes that commuicate by message passing. The notion of correctness introduced is based on the consistency of the replicated system with its nonreplicated counterpart. The formal framework of CSP (communicating sequential processes) allows the proof of partial correctness and deadlock-freedom properties of the systems.of replicated processes. The authors also discuss how a replicated process may be implemented by N-base copies, a majority of which are non-faulty, and point out the necessity of coordinating the copies and the requirements they should satsify.

A description is given of the results of a study of methods of achieving fault tolerance in the Clouds system and, in particular, of achieving increased availability of objects. The problems explored in this work, the model of distributed computation in which the problems posed by the research were examined (the Clouds system), the tools that were used to address these problems (the Aeolus programming language), and some related research are briefly described. The authors present a methodology for achieving available services by conversion of resilient single-site implementations into replicated implementations. A mechanism with which they propose to support this methodology, called distributed locking (DL), is presented. A description is also given of a linguistic feature for the specification of the availability properties of an object replicated via DL. The language runtime support features (primitives) required for DL and the operating system support needed for these features are presented.

The authors present an enhancement to distributed file systems.that allows the users of the system to keep local copies of important files, decreasing the dependency over file servers. Using the notions of stashing and quasi-copies, the system allows users to tune up the quality of the service they want to receive when the file server is not reachable. One of the key points of this work is the focus on the tradeoff between availability and degradation of service. The other main contribution is the design of a distributed file system which is ideally suited to very large distributed systems. in that it provides users with greater tolerance of network partitions and server failures. It is emphasized that the use of stashing does not preclude the use of other performance-enhancing or fault-tolerant techniques. The file system architecture has been implemented and FACE, a prototype of a file system service based on Sun's NFS, is described. Performance figures are reported. These figures show that the overhead of providing the service is negligible. Current plans also call for porting the FACE design to a number of other processors.

Grid computing relies on fragile partnerships. Clients with hundreds or even thousands of pending service requests must seek out and form temporary alliances with remote servers eager to satisfy them. Yet, despite the high quality and reliability of these servers and their software, unexpected events and behavior are common. Communication networks, power systems. operating systems. middleware and operator intervention all conspire to attack even the most carefully arranged client-server interaction. To survive in such an imperfect world, customers of grid resources must be equipped with resilient client software that tolerates failures while aggressively representing their interests. Following our tradition of developing technology that harnesses the power of opportunistic resources, the Condor Project is actively engaged in developing the basic mechanisms for building dependable and effective grid computing clients. Guided by our experience and the practical needs of production users in disciplines as diverse as astronomy and sociology, the Project aims to equip users with powerful software that complements the reliability of the servers that they exploit. Our most visible product is the Condor-G job manager. Other research ventures, including the full Condor distributed system, offer valuable lessons in dependable client-side management. Dependability has been explored in a number of branches of computing, ranging from database systems.to programming languages. The hard-earned lessons from these fields are also essential to grid computing. Fundamental concepts such as timeouts, logging, checkpoints, transactions, leases, and atomic operations must be employed and expressed in basic protocols and interfaces for CPU and I/O access. Without these techniques, clients and servers lose track of the other's state, leading to missed opportunities, wasted resources, incorrect results, and unnecessary failures. A distributed real-time system testbed to support experimental research has been established at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The testbed, named SUVS (Simplified Unmanned Vehicle System), is being used to conduct experimental evaluation of techniques and methods for design of reliable distributed real-time systems. Thus far, SUVS has been primarily successful in experimentation with system level fault tolerance techniques. The SUVS is planned for clinical study of specification, design and implementation methods studied at UTA for real-time distributed/parallel systems. The software part of SUVS consists of a set of sensor tasks, analyzer tasks, and actuator tasks. The first version of SUVS was implemented using Verdix Ada on Micro Vax 3900/Utrix. The second version reported here is written in C and is running on a network of eight SUN Workstations. The need for cooperation among tasks in error detection and recovery is the major factor behind choosing the conversation scheme in fault-tolerant (FT-SUVS). A classic TMR-like voting scheme has also been implemented for FT-SUVS. We demonstrate how the multiple versions of software can be generated in a systematic way for this type of application. The target implementation for FT-SUVS is a hybrid parallel architecture. (This architecture is simulated in a network of SUN Workstations.) The implementation details of FT-SUVS and the preliminary timing and reliability measurements (in the presence of various injected faults) are discussed. These results indicated that the FT-SUVS framework is very useful in developing experimental approaches for design of reliable distributed real-time systems.

Recently Burckhardt et al. proposed a formal specification framework for eventually consistent replicated data types, denoted (vis, ar), based on the notions of visibility and arbitration relations. However, being specific to eventually consistent systems. this framework has two limitations. First, it does not cover non-convergent consistency models since arbitration ar is defined to be a total order over events in a computation. second, it does not cover the consistency models in which each event is required to be aware of the return values of some or all events that are visible to it. In this paper, we extend the (vis, ar) specification framework into a more generic one called (vis, ar, V) for weakly consistent replicated data types. To specify non-convergent consistency models as well, we simply relax the arbitration relation ar to be a partial order. To overcome the second limitation, we allow to specify for each event e, a subset V(e) of its visible set whose return values cannot be ignored when justifying the return value of e. To make it practically feasible, we provide candidates for the visibility and arbitration relations and the V function. By combining these candidates, we demonstrate how to specify various existing consistency models in the (vis, ar, V) framework. Moreover, it helps to discover new consistency models. As a case study, we prove that the causal consistency protocol of MongoDB database satisfies Causal Memory Convergence, a new causal consistency variant discovered in our framework.
