A replicated database is a distributed database in which some data items are stored redundantly at multiple sites. The main goal is to improve system reliability. By storing critical data at multiple sites, the system can operate even though some sites have failed. However, few distributed database systems.support replicated data, because it is difficult to manage as sites fail and recover. This paper presents a theory for proving the correctness of algorithms that manage replicated data. The theory is an extension of serializability theory. We apply it to three replicated data algorithms: Gifford's 'quorum consensus' algorithm, Eager and Sevcik's 'missing writes' algorithm, and Computer Corporation of America's 'available copies' algorithm.

Programmability, reliability, and scalability are system requirements that are essential to retaining or establishing the high ground in the new world order for telecommunications solutions. For telephony systems.to be successful in the next century, they must deliver 'fifth-generation software flexibility' that enables interoperability while satisfying these 3 key requirements to give customers the applications they need, when they need them. Further, these requirements must be designed into an open system architecture from the start: systems.lacking them cannot be easily extended to leverage their combined advantages. Finally, these solutions must readily build upon inexpensive, off-the-shelf hardware components. Telecommunication is becoming telecomputing. Although traditional fault-tolerance approaches can be used to increase the reliability of the platform, a more general software fault-tolerant architecture is required to integrate new off-the-shelf system components reliably and seamlessly into the existing service. The ease of integration hinges both on the system architecture and on easy programming paradigms to integrate dependability with the service functionality. This paper describes our working prototype of an open Telecomputing system based on these architectural principles.

The Autonomous Decentralized database System (ADDS) has been proposed in the background of e-business in respect to the dynamic and heterogeneous requirements of the users. With the rapid development of information technology, different companies in the field of e-business are supposed to cooperate in order to cope with the continuous changing demands for services in a dynamic market. In a diversified environment of service provision and service access, the ADDS provides flexibility to integrate heterogeneous and autonomous systems.while assuring the timeliness and high availability. A loosely-consistency management technology confers autonomy to each site for updating while maintaining the consistency of the whole system. Moreover, a background coordination technology, by utilizing a mobile agent, has been devised to permit the sites can coordinate and cooperate each other while conferring the online property. The use of mobile agent, however, is critical and requires reliability in regard to mobile agent failures that may lead to bad response time and hence the availability of the system may lost. In this paper, a fault tolerance technology is proposed in order that the system autonomously detect and recover the fault of the mobile agent due to a failure in a transmission link, site or bug in the software. The effectiveness of the proposition is shown by simulation. © 2003 IEEE.

We present Orion, a distributed software-Defined Networking platform deployed globally in Google's datacenter (Jupiter) and Wide Area (B4) networks. Orion was designed around a modular, micro-service architecture with a central publish-subscribe database to enable a distributed, yet tightly coupled, software-defined network control system. Orion enables intent-based management and control, is highly scalable and amenable to global control hierarchies. Over the years, Orion has matured with continuously improving performance in convergence (up to 40x faster), throughput (handling up to 1.16 million network updates per second), system scalability (supporting 16x larger networks), and data plane availability (50x, 100x reduction in unavailable time in Jupiter and B4, respectively) while maintaining high development velocity with bi-weekly release cadence. Today, Orion enables Google's software-Defined Networks, defending against failure modes that are both generic to large scale production networks as well as unique to SDN systems.

The use of local area network (LAN) technology for distributed process control is addressed. This paper highlights some current problems, and focuses on some unique new aspects of distributed control which are necessary for providing a properly integrated approach to distributed supervisory control systems. A subscription service satisfies the need to move data efficiently between supervisory computers, taking into account the possibilities of multiple sources (redundancy) and multiple users of the data, making use of the broadcast capabilities of Ethernet to minimise overhead. A hot-standby pair configuration allows two supervisory computers on the network to operate in a redundant manner, providing high reliability. A global facility secure service allows legislating or locking of access to a shared resource (such as part of a database) on another supervisory computer. This permits multiple operations (which are divisible in time) to be safely done. A virtual display system allows a comprehensive set of operator displays on one supervisory computer to be used by an operator display station on another computer. The concept of servicing the display over the network, rather than transferring the data, results in a reduced load, both for the network and for the computers.

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) is an earth science repository that specifically tracks research data on global climatic change. The GCMD is migrating from a centralized architecture to a globally distributed replicated heterogeneous federated system. One of the greatest challenges facing database research is the integration of heterogeneous systems.without compromising the local autonomy, reliability and transparency of the various databases that are participating in the integration. This paper discusses these challenges in the context of the design and implementation of the next version of the GCMD software (Version 8.0). The proposed system has been designed and developed using an object-oriented system architecture based on Java, RMI (Remote Method Invocation) and JDBC. This system enables other sources to be integrated into the GCMD system, with limited changes to the local system itself. This paper describes the components of the GCMD system and addresses the issues of heterogeneity, distribution and autonomy.

The dQUOB system conceptualization of datastreams as database and its SQL interface to data streams is an intuitive way for users to think about their data needs in a large scale application containing hundreds if not thousands of data streams. Experience with dQUOB has shown the need for more aggressive memory management to achieve the scalability we desire. This paper addresses the problem with a two-fold solution. The first is replacement of the existing First Come First Served (FCFS) scheduling algorithm with an Earliest Job First (EJF) algorithm which we demonstrate to yield better average service time. The second is an introspection algorithm that sets and adapts the sizes of join windows in response to knowledge acquired at runtime about event rates. In addition to the potential for significant improvements in memory utilization, the algorithm presented here also provides a means by which the user can reason about join window sizes. Wide area measurements demonstrate the adaptive capability required by the introspection technique.

The ATM-based Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) of Berlin connects two university hospitals (Benjamin Franklin University Hospital and Charite) with the computer resources of the Technical University of Berlin (TUB). distributed new medical services have been implemented and will be evaluated within the highspeed MAN of Berlin. The network with its data transmission rates of up to 155 Mbit/s renders these medical services externally available to practicing physicians. Resource and application sharing is demonstrated by the use of two software systems. The first software system is an interactive 3D reconstruction tool (3D- Medbild), based on a client-server mechanism. This structure allows the use of high- performance computers at the TUB from the low-level workstations in the hospitals. A second software system, RAMSES, utilizes a tissue database of Magnetic Resonance Images. For the remote control of the software, the developed applications use standards such as DICOM 3.0 and features of the World Wide Web. Data security concepts are being tested and integrated for the needs of the sensitive medical data. The highspeed network is the necessary prerequisite for the clinical evaluation of data in a joint teleconference. The transmission of digitized real-time sequences such as video and ultrasound and the interactive manipulation of data are made possible by Multi Media tools.

Today, many distributed systems.are deployed in high-performance computing environments such as a multi-core architecture or a managed network like a data center. As the new computing architectures require more parallelism to improve performance and responsiveness, implementing distributed applications that work consistently in parallel architectures without causing any deadlock or data race issues have become a challenging task. Even more, data center applications must handle fault-tolerance as well because random or correlated crash-restart failures can happen in data centers. Many approaches to solve these issues have been proposed independently to make data center applications to be concurrent, fault-tolerant, or both. Popular applications like graph computing systems.or non-relational database systems.have their own mechanism to handle concurrency and failures. There are even more generic frameworks that provide both parallelism and fault tolerance in data computing frameworks, message-passing interfaces, and software transactional memory systems. However, making a data center application that works in these generic frameworks may require major restructuring or learning a new paradigm. In this dissertation, we present a solution that provides parallelism, and another solutions that provides fault-tolerance, and both in an event-driven system framework transparently. First, we present InContext, a concurrent event execution model that runs events in parallel by associating access behaviors with the shared variables. second, we present Ken, an uncoordinated rollback recovery protocol for event-driven systems.that can mask crash-restart failures and guarantee composable reliability. We also present MaceKen, integrated with Mace frameworks, that transparently provides crash-restart fault-tolerance for legacy Mace applications. Finally, we propose MultiKen, a combined framework for parallelism and fault-tolerance in event-driven systems.
