One-to-many (group) interprocess communication is useful in many real-time distributed applications. It may be conveniently and efficiently realized using the multicast feature available in contemporary local area networks. A kernel model which supports reliable group communication in a distributed computing environment is presented. New semantic tools which capture the nondeterminism of the underlying low-level events concisely are introduced and a process alias-based structuring technique for the kernel to handle the reliability problems that may arise during group communication is described. The scheme works by maintaining a close association between group messages and their corresponding reply messages. Sample programs illustrate how the semantic tools may be used.

The advantage of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) compared to a centric approach is the distribution of sensing suites. However in order for such a system of distributed resources to work in a reliable and effective way a smart cooperation between nodes is needed. In this paper we propose a middleware approach for a highly reliable data storage that helps to assure data availability despite the well known WSN resource problems and disappearing or inactive nodes by providing a reasonable data redundancy in the system. Such a solution helps to ease the design and optimization of the data exchange between nodes as well. Our solution is configurable in order to satisfy the needs of the application on top regarding performance/requirements trade-off. The options specify the quantity and quality of the data replication. Additional features like event mechanism that monitors the data and the possibility to issue database like queries increase the applicability of our middleware. In this paper we focus on the evaluation of its capabilities regarding reliability, the consistency of replicates and the costs of the data management. The simulation results for a reasonable set-up show that the CPU load caused by the data replication is low (below 3 percent) and the average inconsistency time is as small as about 0,06 seconds for a single hop and about 0, 15 seconds for a two hops replication area. There is still room for improvements, but a clear definition of problems helps to find ways to cope with them in order to achieve the chosen goals.

A highly dependable embedded fault-tolerant memory architecture for high performance massively parallel computing applications and its dependability assurance techniques are proposed and discussed in this paper. The proposed fault tolerant memory provides two distinctive repair mechanisms: the permanent laser redundancy reconfiguration during the wafer probe stage in the factory to enhance its manufacturing yield and the dynamic BIST/BISD/BISR (built-in-self-test-diagnosis-repair)-based reconfiguration of the redundant resources in field to maintain high field reliability. The system reliability which is mainly determined by hardware configuration demanded by software and field reconfiguration/repair utilizing unused processor and memory modules is referred to as HW/SW Co-reliability. Various system configuration options in terms of parallel processing unit size and processor/memory intensity are also introduced and their HW/SW Co-reliability characteristics are discussed. A modeling and assurance technique for HW/SW Co-reliability with emphasis on the dependability assurance techniques based on combinatorial modeling suitable for the proposed memory design is developed and validated by extensive parametric simulations. Thereby, design and implementation of memory-reliability-optimized and highly reliable fault-tolerant field reconfigurable massively parallel computing systems.can be achieved.

For systems.containing a large number of processing elements (PEs), the capability to recover from a PE fault is important. The dynamic redundancy (DR) network can tolerate faults in the network and support a system that tolerates PE faults without degradation in performance by adding spare PEs, while retaining the full capability of a multistage cube. A variation of the DR network, the reduced DR (RDR) network, is presented which can be implemented more cost effectively while retaining most of the advantages of the DR. The reliability of systems.containing the DR or RDR networks and spare PEs and the reliability of systems.with no spare PEs are also estimated and compared. It is shown that using the DR or RDR network and spare PEs in a system can achieve better system reliability over a wide range of N, where N is the number of functioning PEs, than can using any kind of N multiplied by N fault-tolerant network and no spares.

Full-system emulation has been an extremely useful tool in developing and debugging systems.software like operating systems.and hypervisors. However, current full-system emulators lack the support for deterministic replay, which limits the reproducibility of concurrency bugs that is indispensable for analyzing and debugging the essentially multi-threaded systems.software. This paper analyzes the challenges in supporting deterministic replay in parallel full-system emulators and makes a comprehensive study on the sources of non-determinism. Unlike application-level replay systems. our system, called ReEmu, needs to log sources of non-determinism in both the guest software stack and the dynamic binary translator for faithful replay. To provide scalable and efficient record and replay on multicore machines, ReEmu makes several notable refinements to the CREW protocol that replays shared memory systems. First, being aware of the performance bottlenecks in frequent lock operations in the CREW protocol, ReEmu refines the CREW protocol with a seqlock-like design, to avoid serious contention and possible starvation in instrumentation code tracking dependence of racy accesses on a shared memory object. second, to minimize the required log files, ReEmu only logs minimal local information regarding accesses to a shared memory location, but instead relies on an offline log processing tool to derive precise shared memory dependence for faithful replay. Third, ReEmu adopts an automatic lock clustering mechanism that clusters a set of uncontended memory objects to a bulk to reduce the frequencies of lock operations, which noticeably boost performance. Our prototype ReEmu is based on our open-source COREMU system and supports scalable and efficient record and replay of full-system environments (both x64 and ARM). Performance evaluation shows that ReEmu has very good performance scalability on an Intel multicore machine. It incurs only 68.9% performance overhead on average (ranging

FaSST is an RDMA-based system that provides distributed in-memory transactions with serializability and durability. Existing RDMA-based transaction processing systems.use one-sided RDMA primitives for their ability to bypass the remote CPU. This design choice brings several drawbacks. First, the limited flexibility of one-sided RDMA reduces performance and increases software complexity when designing distributed data stores. second, deep-rooted technical limitations of RDMA hardware limit scalability in large clusters. FaSST eschews one-sided RDMA for fast RPCs using two-sided unreliable datagrams, which we show drop packets extremely rarely on modern RDMA networks. This approach provides better performance, scalability, and simplicity, without requiring expensive reliability mechanisms in software. In comparison with published numbers, FaSST outperforms FaRM on the TATP benchmark by almost 2x while using close to half the hardware resources, and it outperforms DrTM+R on the SmallBank benchmark by around 1.7x without making data locality assumptions.

The Battle Management Language (BML) has been developed as an unambiguous representation of orders, reports and requests between military command and control (C2) systems.and simulations. This paper describes development of two critical elements for BML experimentation. The first is a Web service that is used as a repository for the orders, reports, and requests, packaged as XML documents and stored in a relational database in a standard format. The second is a graphic user interface that supports inspection and modification of BML documents using forms that are created from the BML schemas at runtime, combined with a geospatial interface. This paper describes the role of these elements in C2-simulation interoperation and describes their architecture and features, as motivated by application in NATO Coalition BML experimentation. The software described is available as open source. © 2011 IEEE.

Object Oriented simulation is becoming more and more important, as object based software architectures and platform are gaining popularity. A prototype CASE environment is under development at CSELT which allows users to specify applications according to the ACE computational model, an Object Oriented based on the concept of Building Block, in turn derived by the TINA-C architecture. One of the features provided by ACE environment is the simulation of the specifications. The proposed approach to simulation is to first translate the object oriented specification to the process level, to use an already available simulation engine with a good efficiency and reliability and then bring the simulation results back to the object level. The semantics of the ACE language, which includes sophisticated primitives, like asynchronous method invocation, concurrent objects and method guards has been mapped at the process level using appropriate templates. The results show that a good efficiency has been obtained: around one hundred Object level events per second are simulated on a state of the art workstation.

Traditional approaches to reliability and performance analysis become intractable when dealing with complex parallel and distributed processing systems. computer networks, and software for such systems. New approaches based on Petri nets, dataflow graphs, simulations and approximations are now used in such cases. In order to extend the utility of Petri nets and dataflow graphs, the authors present a decomposition technique that can be used to partition a large system into smaller subsystems. where performance indexes of the total system can be obtained (at least approximately) from the subsystem analyses. The decomposition reduces the computational complexity of analysis significantly. The approach (using marked graph components) is similar to the concept of 'near-completely decomposable' stochastic processes.< >

Since the early 70s, the industrial research community has pursued the elusive dream of a commercially successful database machine: a dedicated-function computer based on an architecture specialized and optimized for database functions, with price and performance characteristics substantially beyond what can be achieved with general purpose software and *** this period, several forces have conspired to frustrate achievement of this goal - forces which are for the most part independent of the DBM research itself. Chief among these is the accelerating pace of advances in microelectronics, which simultaneously creates a moving target for database machine vendors while focusing the beleaguered computer manufacturer's R&D resources on trying to keep up with protracted product life cycles. Meanwhile, successive generations of relational database software products are incorporating sophisticated performance techniques that further challenge the database hardware *** database server, in contrast, finds itself in a far more hospitable environment. At one time, the database machine (say, in the role of a “backend”) and the database server in a network were viewed as minor variations on a common theme. Now the differences are understood to be essential, bringing the server concept in tune with prevailing trends as surely as the backend is in conflict with them. The opportunity for database servers is fueled by the growth of distributed computing and the strength of the “open systems. movement, leading to standards at multiple levels of the relational database *** database server interface standards (de facto or otherwise) are established, a market for these subsystems.will emerge which is both very large and broadly based. But, if the market for database machines is to expand beyond narrowly defined niches, product suppliers must overcome far greater obstacles.
