The authors revisit the problem of software fault tolerance in distributed systems. In particular, we propose an extension of a message-driven confidence-driven (MDCD) protocol we have developed for error containment and recovery in a particular type of distributed embedded system. More specifically, we augment the original MDCD protocol by introducing the method of "fine-grained confidence adjustment," which enables us to remove the architectural restrictions. The dynamic nature of the MDCD approach gives it a number of desirable characteristics. First, this approach does not impose any restrictions on interactions among application software components or require costly message-exchange based process coordination/synchronization. second, the algorithms allow redundancies to be applied only to low-confidence or critical interacting software components in a distributed system, permitting flexible realization of software fault tolerance. Finally, the dynamic error containment and recovery mechanisms are transparent to the application and ready to be implemented by generic middleware.

In the world of pervasive computing where large management systems. as well as small devices, all become interconnected, the problem of the configuration and management of networks is becoming increasingly complex. System administrators have to deal with many problems due to the increasingly distributed architecture of systems. Jini, a new paradigm for the development and management of distributed systems. provides mechanisms that enable systems.to plug together to form an impromptu community. This practice report demonstrates how Jini can be applied in an industrial environment, or more exactly how it can be used in the integration of embedded devices on-board trains in the back-office IT infrastructure of railway operators. We present two use cases: the first is about an on-board service that allows for remote access to an on-board diagnosis database; the second is about automatically installing new services on-board trains. The results are encouraging and prove that Jini is the appropriate technology to link application servers and service gateways in embedded servers.

The Fault Tolerant systems.Group (GSTF) of the Technical University of Valencia has developed the DICOS (distributed Industrial COntrol System) system. The architecture of DICOS nodes and the error detection mechanisms used are presented. These mechanisms are based on the built-in capabilities of the microcontroller used, control flow checking with the aid of a second microcontroller and double execution of tasks. In order to validate the error detection mechanisms, a software fault injector (SOFI-software Fault Injector) has been developed to obtain the error coverage and latency times. In this paper SOFI is presented, showing its primary features and results of different fault injection campaigns.

In a recent software development effort, an ARINC Research Corporation development team translated 500 system transactions into 11000 lines of code in Ada-compilable program design language (PDL). The team established rigorous data collection and review processes to collect and classify defect data and identify reliability growth in the PDL being produced. Two classes of defects for the coding process were defined: minor defects and logic defects. Data were collected by transaction, by defect type, and by lines of PDL. The defect analysis indicated that the learning process, and thus reliability growth, were different for the two defect classes. In addition, a period of reduced work load and changes in coding standards affected the observed defect rates for each class differently. As a result of this analysis effort, a database was established to track the coding process and to provide a basis for estimating various parameters of future efforts (e.g., time and cost) as well as the impact of process changes.< >

The Autonomous Decentralized database System (ADDS) has been proposed in the background of e-business in respect to the dynamic and heterogeneous requirements of the users. With the rapid development of information technology, different companies in the field of e-business are supposed to cooperate in order to cope with the continuous changing demands of services in a dynamic market. In a diversified environment of service provision and service access, the ADDS provides flexibility to integrate heterogeneous and autonomous systems.while assuring timeliness and high availability. A loosely-consistency management technology confers autonomy to each site for updating while maintaining the consistency of the whole system. Moreover, a background coordination technology, by utilizing a mobile agent, has been devised to permit the sites to coordinate and cooperate with each other while conferring the online property. The use of mobile agent, however, is critical and requires reliability with regard to mobile agent failures that may lead to bad response times and hence the availability of the system may lost. A fault tolerance technology is proposed in order that the system autonomously detect and recover the fault of the mobile agent due to a failure in a transmission link, site or bug in the software. The effectiveness of the proposition is shown by simulation.

A reliable data server (RDS) is a distributed system that encapsulates replicated data objects (either main memory or secondary storage copies on different sites) and their maintenance primitives. RDS is seen by its clients as a single entity regardless of the number of sites that constitute it. Since different applications may have different reliability requirements, RDS can provide uninterrupted service while tolerating a user-defined number of failures. To achieve a desired degree of resiliency free sites may be dynamically incorporated into RDS to bold additional copies of data objects. Under this approach, a site failure does not cause the abortion of transactions in progress and the availability of the replicated data is not limited during recovery. The design of the system is presented and some preliminary results of the evaluation of its performance are discussed.< >

This paper describes software architecture of using GPRS technique to provide wireless data communication for a traffic data collection system. The development of the communication software was based on two scenarios: Centralized database Management (CDM) and distributed Data Management (DDM) systems. They were used effectively to improve the current “download on demand” and post event analysis working mode. A “close to the real time” data transmission was achieved. As the essential requirement of an Intelligent Traffic System (ITS), the application of the GPRS technique enabled the user to access the real time traffic data uploaded from multiple road side traffic data collection units. In this study, the authors have successfully developed and tested the communication software of a proposed CDM system and the software architecture of the DDM system was also discussed. For the DDM system, the interface and communication software were designed using Unified Modeling Language and developed as an Object-oriented system based on the .NET platform. The database part was developed using Microsoft SQL. The reliability and the performance of the DDM system were evaluated against proposed hardware configurations.

The scalability and reliability of secondary storage systems.are their most significant aspects for advanced database applications. Research on high-function disks has recently attracted a great deal of attention because technological progress now allows disk-resident data processing. This capability is not only useful for executing application programs on the disk, but is also suited for controlling distributed disks so they are scalable and reliable. We propose autonomous disks in the network environment by using the disk-resident data processing facility. A set of autonomous disks is configured as a cluster in a network, and data is distributed within the cluster, to be accessed uniformly by using a distributed directory. The disks accept simultaneous accesses from multiple hosts via a network, and handle data distribution and load skews. They are also able to tolerate disk failures and some software errors of disk controllers, and can reconfigure the cluster after the damaged disks are repaired. The data distribution, skew handling, and fault tolerance are completely transparent to hosts. The local communication means the size of the cluster is scalable. Autonomous disks are applicable to many advanced applications, such as a large Web server having many HTML files. We also propose to use rules to implement these functions, and we demonstrate their flexibility by examples of rules.

The "Diaspect", the middleware package we have developed, provides basic industrial computing services common to various ICS applications. The Diaspect family includes a real-time data service that supports the programming of reliable hard real-time data processing, a man-machine service that realizes advanced man-machine functions for sophisticated plant operation, a distributed database middleware that manages the consistency of the distributed database and provides user specific views. We extracted these middleware services based on the analysis of many ICS applications. The author describes the concepts behind the development of the Diaspect, and outlines functions of principal middlewares.

distributed deep reinforcement learning(DDRL) has been used in distributed systems.to better improve the adaptability. However, DDRL-based systems.are also inevitably under the threat of Byzantine workers. There is an urgent need to enhance the resilience of the DDRL-based system against Byzantine failures. This paper proposes a resilient mechanism for mitigating the influence of Byzantine workers on DDRL-based systems. First, we formalize the DDRL-based system as a multi-armed bandit model for well capturing the collective effect of workers on the whole learning process, and then transforming the resilient mechanism design problem into the sampling policy optimization problem. second, we propose a self-adaptation process for filtering out the harmful data generated by Byzantine workers and theoretically give a mathematical analysis of the understanding, demonstrating its effectiveness under ideal conditions. Third, based on a typical DDRL-based system (i.e., Asynchronous Advantage Actor-Critic, A3C), we implement a resilient distributed A3C (ReD-A3C). With extensive experiments on the DDRL benchmark tasks, we show that ReD-A3C outperforms available Byzantine tolerant approaches.
