Internet users increasingly rely on publicly avail able data for everything from software installation to investment decisions. Unfortunately, the vast majority of public content on the Internet comes with no integrity or authenticity guarantees. This paper presents the self-certifying read-only file system, a content distribution system providing secure, scal able access to public, read-only data. The read-only file system makes the security of published content independent from that of the distribution infrastructure. In a secure area (per haps off-line), a publisher creates a digitally-signed database out of a file system's contents. The publisher then replicates the database on untrusted content-distribution servers, allowing for high availability. The read-only file system protocol furthermore pushes the cryptographic cost of content verification entirely onto clients, allowing servers to scal to a large number of clients. Measurements of an implementation show that an individual server running on a 550 Mhz Pentium III with FreeBSD can support 1, 012 connections per second and 300 concurrent clients compiling a large software package.

In the world of pervasive computing where large management systems. as well as small devices, all become interconnected, the problem of the configuration and management of networks is becoming increasingly complex. System administrators have to deal with many problems due to the increasingly distributed architecture of systems. Jini, a new paradigm for the development and management of distributed systems. provides mechanisms that enable systems.to plug together to form an impromptu community. This practice report demonstrates how Jini can be applied in an industrial environment, or more exactly how it can be used in the integration of embedded devices on-board trains in the back-office IT infrastructure of railway operators. We present two use cases: the first is about an on-board service that allows for remote access to an on-board diagnosis database; the second is about automatically installing new services on-board trains. The results are encouraging and prove that Jini is the appropriate technology to link application servers and service gateways in embedded servers.

In this paper we propose a fault-tolerant mechanism for parallel programs based on task replication. We use a sequential discrete-event simulator of a distributed system subject to failures to compare a semi-active approach and a passive approach of the protocol. In our model, each time a task of a given parallel program is allocated, a copy of it is stored in a second processor, called the buddy processor. If the original processor fails, the copies of the tasks at the buddy processor will be processed, providing fault tolerance. Some performance measures, such as program execution times and processor utilization factors, are given for the different versions of the mechanism. The performance has been studied as a function of processor degradation, and program and system sizes.

An increasing number of applications are being developed using distributed object computing middleware, such as CORBA. Many of these applications require the underlying middleware, operating systems. and networks to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) support to enhance their efficiency, predictability, scalability, and fault tolerance. The Object Management Group (OMG), which standardizes CORBA, has addressed many of these application requirements in the Real-time CORBA and Fault-Tolerant CORBA specifications. We provide four contributions to the study of fault-tolerant CORBA middleware for performance-sensitive applications. First, we provide an overview of the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification. second, we describe a framework called DOORS, which is implemented as a CORBA service to provide end-to-end application-level fault tolerance. Third, we outline how the DOORS' reliability and fault-tolerance model has been incorporated into the standard OMG Fault-tolerant CORBA specification. Finally, we outline the requirements for CORBA ORB core and higher-level services to support the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification efficiently.

Design on the Web raises challenging questions concerning how users interact with objects, applications, and other users. In this work, we propose a collaborative and interactive client-server design framework and implement a room design system for our study. We have integrated technologies used in distributed computation (Java and CORBA) and computer graphics (VRML). It divides the design process into three tiers. First, collaborative and interactive design, viewing, and publishing. second, scene generation. Third, scene database management. Our system can be applied in Electronic Commerce to improve the existing systems.by allowing customers to select furniture and to visualize the whole furnished room in 3D.

The technologies using message queues, which correspond to asynchronous communication in distributed processing, have become remarkable. In particular, object-oriented persistent message queuing has obtained reliability in the asynchronous communication of middleware. On the other hand, XML is a promising database tool which enables interoperability of document exchange in the heterogeneous business environment. This paper presents an XML-based message queue which unifies the format of the message and realizes easy data exchange in different applications. First, we present the XML messaging architecture. We also propose relevant issues concerning XML messaging, including the structural representation and several XML messaging operations. Not only FIFO operations but also advanced operations can be designed using information contained within the messages, owing to XML's features. second, we present message queuing by XML. The representation of the message queue by means of XML and concurrent access to the message queue are proposed. Finally, we report an implementation of the XML-based message queue using Java programming. Throughout this paper, we show the efficiency of the proposed XML-based message queue.

The scalability and reliability of secondary storage systems.are their most significant aspects for advanced database applications. Research on high-function disks has recently attracted a great deal of attention because technological progress now allows disk-resident data processing. This capability is not only useful for executing application programs on the disk, but is also suited for controlling distributed disks so they are scalable and reliable. We propose autonomous disks in the network environment by using the disk-resident data processing facility. A set of autonomous disks is configured as a cluster in a network, and data is distributed within the cluster, to be accessed uniformly by using a distributed directory. The disks accept simultaneous accesses from multiple hosts via a network, and handle data distribution and load skews. They are also able to tolerate disk failures and some software errors of disk controllers, and can reconfigure the cluster after the damaged disks are repaired. The data distribution, skew handling, and fault tolerance are completely transparent to hosts. The local communication means the size of the cluster is scalable. Autonomous disks are applicable to many advanced applications, such as a large Web server having many HTML files. We also propose to use rules to implement these functions, and we demonstrate their flexibility by examples of rules. © 2000 IEEE.

The strategic and operational characteristics of a distributed phased archive for a multivendor incremental implementation of picture archiving and communications systems

The long-term (10 years) multimodality distributed phased archive for the Medical Information, Communication and Archive System (MICAS) is being implemented in three phases. The selection process took approximately 10 months. Based on the mandatory archive attributes and desirable features, Cemax-Icon (Fremont, CAI was selected as the vendor. The archive provides for an open-solution allowing incorporation of leading edge, "best of breed" hardware and software and provides maximum flexibility and automation of workflow both within and outside of radiology. The solution selected is media-independent, provides expandable storage capacity, and will provide redundancy and fault tolerance in phase II at minimum cost. Other attributes of the archive include scalable archive strategy, virtual image database with global query, and an object-oriented database. The archive is seamlessly integrated with the radiology information system (RIS) and provides automated fetching and routing, automated study reconciliation using modality worklist manager, clinical reports available at any Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) workstation, and studies available for interpretation whether validated or not. Within 24 hours after a new study is acquired, four copies will reside within different components of the archive including a copy that can be stored off-site. Phase II of the archive will be installed during 1999 and will include a second Cemax-Icon archive and database using archive manager (AM) Version 4.0 in a second computer room. A mechanism is proposed for managing distributed applications (DAPs) in environment having multiple object request brokers (ORBs). The mechanism ensures the normal-state functioning of DAPs composed of servers. It facilitates DAP management including fault, performance, and configuration management throughout the DAP lifecycle. The mechanism includes three kinds of key components. The first is a domain manager which is responsible for fault and configuration management of DAPs. The second is a server manager, which is responsible for fault and configuration management for servers that make up DAPs. The third is a monitor that manages the performance and normal/abnormal state of servers. The common interface for monitors functioning on different kinds of DAP platforms facilitates managing DAPs over multiple ORBs. The prototype of the proposed mechanism functions properly and performs well when used with a CORBA-2.0-compliant ORE.

The Fault Tolerant systems.Group (GSTF) of the Technical University of Valencia has developed the DICOS (distributed Industrial COntrol System) system. The architecture of DICOS nodes and the error detection mechanisms used are presented. These mechanisms are based on the built-in capabilities of the microcontroller used, control flow checking with the aid of a second microcontroller and double execution of tasks. In order to validate the error detection mechanisms, a software fault injector (SOFI-software Fault Injector) has been developed to obtain the error coverage and latency times. In this paper SOFI is presented, showing its primary features and results of different fault injection campaigns.
