The Autonomous Decentralized database System (ADDS) has been proposed in the background of e-business in respect to the dynamic and heterogeneous requirements of the users. With the rapid development of information technology, different companies in the field of e-business are supposed to cooperate in order to cope with the continuous changing demands for services in a dynamic market. In a diversified environment of service provision and service access, the ADDS provides flexibility to integrate heterogeneous and autonomous systems.while assuring the timeliness and high availability. A loosely-consistency management technology confers autonomy to each site for updating while maintaining the consistency of the whole system. Moreover, a background coordination technology, by utilizing a mobile agent, has been devised to permit the sites can coordinate and cooperate each other while conferring the online property. The use of mobile agent, however, is critical and requires reliability in regard to mobile agent failures that may lead to bad response time and hence the availability of the system may lost. In this paper, a fault tolerance technology is proposed in order that the system autonomously detect and recover the fault of the mobile agent due to a failure in a transmission link, site or bug in the software. The effectiveness of the proposition is shown by simulation. © 2003 IEEE.

As software distributed Shared Memory(DSM) systems.become attractive on larger clusters, the focus of attention moves toward improving the reliability of systems. In this paper, we propose a lightweight logging scheme, called remote logging, and a recovery protocol for home-based DSM. Remote logging stores coherence-related data to the volatile memory of a remote node. The logging overhead can be moderated with high-speed system area network and user-level DMA operations supported by modern communication protocols. Remote logging tolerates multiple failures if the backup nodes of failed nodes are alive. It makes the reliability of DSM grow much higher. Experimental results show that our fault-tolerant DSM has low overhead compared to conventional stable logging and it can be effectively recovered from some concurrent failures.

DBMS are widely used and successfully applied to a huge range of applications. However the transaction paradigm that is, with variations like nested transactions and workflow systems. the basis for durability and correctness is poorly suited to many modern applications. Transactions do not scale well and behave poorly at high concurrency levels and in distributed systems. The atomic-operations model, which is proposed in this paper, is an alternative database paradigm based upon a complete isolation between application and database and on explicit consistency management. We describe this model and outline classes of applications for which atomic-operations might provide advantages such as better performance than transactions. We describe a graph-based approach that expresses database transactions consisting of four types of graph (operation, consistency, combined and atomic) and a transformation algebra (the operators /spl oplus/, /spl otimes/, /spl middot/, /spl Phi/ and /spl Psi/) to enable transactional applications to be rewritten into forms usable under the atomic-operations model.

Trends in high-end clusters are to deploy an ever larger number of processors to push the envelope on parallelizing scientific applications. A similar trend exists in server computing where more and more servers are composed into a farm. One of the main challenges in such environments is to achieve scalability of synchronization, specifically for locking. Our work focuses on scalable locking in distributed systems. At its essence is a peer-to-peer protocol for multi-mode hierarchical locking, which is applicable to transaction-style processing and distributed agreement. We demonstrate high scalability combined with low response times in high-performance cluster environments. Our experiments on an IBM SP show that the number of messages approaches an asymptote at 15 nodes, from which point on the message overhead is in the order of 3-9 messages per request, depending on system parameters. At the same time, response times increase linearly with a proportional increase in requests and, consequently, higher concurrency levels. We observed response times under 2 and 10 msec for up to 25 and 80 nodes for critical sections that are one 25th the size of non-critical code. Our approach benefits in large from high levels of concurrency upon resolving requests and dynamic path compression for request propagation. Besides its technical strengths, our approach is intriguing due to its simplicity and its wide applicability, ranging from large-scale clusters to server-style computing.

Our case study provides the most important conceptual lessons learned from the implementation of a distributed Telecommunication Management System (DTMS), which controls a networked voice communication system. Major requirements for the DTMS are fault-tolerance against site or network failures, transactional safety, and reliable persistence. In order to provide distribution and persistence both transparently and fault-tolerant we introduce a two-layer architecture facilitating an asynchronous replication algorithm. Among the lessons learned are: component based software engineering poses a significant initial overhead but is worth it in the long term; a fault-tolerant naming service is a key requirement for fail-safe distribution; the reasonable granularity for persistence and concurrency control is one whole object; asynchronous replication on the database layer is superior to synchronous replication on the instance level in terms of robustness and consistency; semi-structured persistence with XML has drawbacks regarding consistency, performance and convenience; in contrast to an arbitrarily meshed object model, a accentuated hierarchical structure is more robust and feasible; a query engine has to provide a means for navigation through the object model; finally the propagation of deletion operation becomes more complex in an object-oriented model. By incorporating these lessons learned we are well underway to provide a highly available, distributed platform for persistent object systems.

Advances in field reconfigurable technology have made possible the design and implementation of highly flexible parallel multi-processor-memory systems.system reliability is often an important measure of these systems.because a degradation of an individual module can unacceptably impair the reliable operation of these systems. System reliability is mainly determined by the hardware (HW) configurations (requested by the software, SW) and the process of field reconfiguration/repair (by utilizing unused processors and memory modules as spares). This is referred to as HW/SW Co-reliability. System configurations are categorized in terms of parallel processor size and processor/memory intensity as affecting the HW/SW Co-reliability. Their characteristics are discussed. A model for HW/SW Co-reliability based on a combinatorial analysis for field reconfigurable multiprocessor-memory systems.is then proposed and further validated by extensive parametric simulations, thus allowing the design and implementation of highly reliable field-reconfigurable multiprocessor-memory systems. © 2002 IEEE.

Cycles and knots in directed graphs are problems that can be associated with deadlocks in database and communication systems. Many algorithms to detect cycles and knots in directed graphs were proposed. Boukerche and Tropper have proposed a distributed algorithm that solve the problem in a efficient away. Their algorithm has a message complexity of 2m vs. (at least) 4m for the Chandy and Misra algorithm, where in is the number of links in the graph, and requires 0 (n log n) bits of memory, where n is the number of nodes. We have implemented Boukerche and Tropper's algorithm according to the construction of processes of the CSP model. Our implementation was done. using JCSP, an implementation of CSP for Java, and the results are presented.

Grid computing relies on fragile partnerships. Clients with hundreds or even thousands of pending service requests must seek out and form temporary alliances with remote servers eager to satisfy them. Yet, despite the high quality and reliability of these servers and their software, unexpected events and behavior are common. Communication networks, power systems. operating systems. middleware and operator intervention all conspire to attack even the most carefully arranged client-server interaction. To survive in such an imperfect world, customers of grid resources must be equipped with resilient client software that tolerates failures while aggressively representing their interests. Following our tradition of developing technology that harnesses the power of opportunistic resources, the Condor Project is actively engaged in developing the basic mechanisms for building dependable and effective grid computing clients. Guided by our experience and the practical needs of production users in disciplines as diverse as astronomy and sociology, the Project aims to equip users with powerful software that complements the reliability of the servers that they exploit. Our most visible product is the Condor-G job manager. Other research ventures, including the full Condor distributed system, offer valuable lessons in dependable client-side management. Dependability has been explored in a number of branches of computing, ranging from database systems.to programming languages. The hard-earned lessons from these fields are also essential to grid computing. Fundamental concepts such as timeouts, logging, checkpoints, transactions, leases, and atomic operations must be employed and expressed in basic protocols and interfaces for CPU and I/O access. Without these techniques, clients and servers lose track of the other's state, leading to missed opportunities, wasted resources, incorrect results, and unnecessary failures. Intellectual capital is one of the most important assets in successful companies. An important part of this intellectual capital is the product quality and reliability intellectual capital that is comprised of "lessons learned," corrective actions taken, best practices, data regarding customer perception and customer feedback as it relates to different products, and most importantly accurate reliability metrics on deployed parts, components and systems. Managing this knowledge, experience and information should be a high priority in both large-scale and small-scale companies. Unfortunately, in many organizations, most of the required information and knowledge is spread across different divisions and geographical locations. Such information usually resides either on paper or in disparate databases, thus making the effective utilization of such information a difficult or impossible task unless a centralized data collection and management system is in place. This paper presents a description of the conception and implementation of three web-based systems.for the management of reliability and quality information. These are: I. A simple Internal Tracking System (ITS) developed to manage customer support and anomaly tracking data for a software development company. 2. The evolution of this concept into a more complex and powerful Quality Tracking and Management System (QTMS) capable of meeting the failure reporting, corrective action and customer support needs of both large and small companies with diverse product lines and product configurations. 3. A web-based reliability/Quality Dashboard for automated analysis and presentation of the reliability and quality data captured by systems.like the ITS and QTMS. The three web-based systems.presented in this paper were initially developed by and used by ReliaSoft Corporation with great success and user acceptance. This success led to subsequent modifications, adaptations and deployments of similar systems.at other companies.
