Design on the Web raises challenging questions concerning how users interact with objects, applications, and other users. In this work, we propose a collaborative and interactive client-server design framework and implement a room design system for our study. We have integrated technologies used in distributed computation (Java and CORBA) and computer graphics (VRML). It divides the design process into three tiers. First, collaborative and interactive design, viewing, and publishing. Second, scene generation. third, scene database management. Our system can be applied in Electronic Commerce to improve the existing systems.by allowing customers to select furniture and to visualize the whole furnished room in 3D.

An increasing number of applications are being developed using distributed object computing middleware, such as CORBA. Many of these applications require the underlying middleware, operating systems. and networks to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) support to enhance their efficiency, predictability, scalability, and fault tolerance. The Object Management Group (OMG), which standardizes CORBA, has addressed many of these application requirements in the Real-time CORBA and Fault-Tolerant CORBA specifications. We provide four contributions to the study of fault-tolerant CORBA middleware for performance-sensitive applications. First, we provide an overview of the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification. Second, we describe a framework called DOORS, which is implemented as a CORBA service to provide end-to-end application-level fault tolerance. third, we outline how the DOORS' reliability and fault-tolerance model has been incorporated into the standard OMG Fault-tolerant CORBA specification. Finally, we outline the requirements for CORBA ORB core and higher-level services to support the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification efficiently.

There is an increasing demand on using off-the-shelf (OTS) software components to facilitate the development of software systems. distributed software systems.are often too complex to develop from scratch. Therefore, distributed system designers are motivated to deploy trusted software components resulting in a component-based nature of the system. Using OTS components could indicate a more reliable software. However, the sensitivity of the system reliability to component reliabilities needs further investigation based on reliability analysis models and techniques that are suitable for distributed component-based software. The distributed nature of these systems.further coerces the analysis technique to incorporate link and delivery channel reliabilities. This paper proposes a reliability analysis technique for distributed software systems. The technique is based on scenarios that are modeled as sequence diagrams. Using scenarios, we construct Component-Dependency Graphs (CDG). CDGs have been introduced for reliability analysis of component-based systems. They are extended here to serve the complex nature of distributed systems.by applying nesting and hierarchy. CDGs include component and link reliabilities, which are treated as first class elements of the model. Based on CDGs, we present an algorithm to analyze the sensitivity of system reliability to reliabilities of its components, subsystems. and links. The proposed analysis technique is useful in identifying critical components and critical component links. An example based on medical informatics standard is presented to illustrate our methodology.

Creating robust software requires not only careful specification and implementation, but also quantitative measurement. This paper describes Ballista exception handling testing of the High Level Architecture Run-Time Infrastructure (HLA RTI). The RTI is a standard distributed simulation system intended to provide completely robust exception handling, yet implementations have normalized robustness failure rates as high as 10%. Non-robust testing responses include exception handler crashes, segmentation violations, `unknown' exceptions, and task hangs. Other issues include different robustness failure modes across ports to two operating systems. and mandatory client machine rebooting after a particular RTI failure. Testing the RTI led to scalable extensions of the Ballista architecture for handling exception-based error reporting models, testing object-oriented software structures (including call-backs, pass by reference, and constructors), and operating in a state-rich, distributed system environment. These results demonstrate that robustness testing can provide useful feedback to high-quality software development processes, and can be applied to domains well beyond the previous work on testing operating systems.

This paper describes a tool-based approach for designing and prototyping a distributed database application. This approach is demonstrated for an Academic Affairs Information System (AAIS) to assist the Webster University main campus and its 70+ remote sites in managing the information required to admit students, approve programs, schedule courses, assign faculty, register students, and generate the required queries and reports. ORACLE Relational database Management (RDBMS) tools and products for Windows NT were used to support AAIS requirements analysis, design, and prototype implementation. The Designer/2000 Process Modeler tool was used to document the top-level business functions, and the Data Modeler tool was used to develop a third normal form data model. The Developer/2000 Forms tool was used to prototype several user interface forms for main campus staff, remote staff, and students to enter and update student and program data. A Web Server was also installed, along with the Java software and AppletViewer, to test the prototype forms from a Web Browser.

The scalability and reliability of secondary storage systems.are their most significant aspects for advanced database applications. Research on high-function disks has recently attracted a great deal of attention because technological progress now allows disk-resident data processing. This capability is not only useful for executing application programs on the disk, but is also suited for controlling distributed disks so they are scalable and reliable. We propose autonomous disks in the network environment by using the disk-resident data processing facility. A set of autonomous disks is configured as a cluster in a network, and data is distributed within the cluster, to be accessed uniformly by using a distributed directory. The disks accept simultaneous accesses from multiple hosts via a network, and handle data distribution and load skews. They are also able to tolerate disk failures and some software errors of disk controllers, and can reconfigure the cluster after the damaged disks are repaired. The data distribution, skew handling, and fault tolerance are completely transparent to hosts. The local communication means the size of the cluster is scalable. Autonomous disks are applicable to many advanced applications, such as a large Web server having many HTML files. We also propose to use rules to implement these functions, and we demonstrate their flexibility by examples of rules. © 2000 IEEE.

A mechanism is proposed for managing distributed applications (DAPs) in environment having multiple object request brokers (ORBs). The mechanism ensures the normal-state functioning of DAPs composed of servers. It facilitates DAP management including fault, performance, and configuration management throughout the DAP lifecycle. The mechanism includes three kinds of key components. The first is a domain manager which is responsible for fault and configuration management of DAPs. The second is a server manager, which is responsible for fault and configuration management for servers that make up DAPs. The third is a monitor that manages the performance and normal/abnormal state of servers. The common interface for monitors functioning on different kinds of DAP platforms facilitates managing DAPs over multiple ORBs. The prototype of the proposed mechanism functions properly and performs well when used with a CORBA-2.0-compliant ORE.

The characteristics of failures occurring in networked computing systems.are still poorly understood. As a consequence, this is a rich area for exploration, especially with the arrival of new network interface standards, such as the Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) adopted by Microsoft, Intel and Compaq. The goal of VIA is to improve the performance of distributed applications by reducing the latency associated with the exchange of critical message between processes in Windows NT-based systems. In this paper, we propose the SMiFI (software Multilevel Fault Injection) mechanism to evaluate the failure characteristics of networked systems. specifically VIA. The mechanism covers all software protocol layers of the host interface and corrupts both the messages and the computation engines that manipulate the messages.
