The Peer-To-Peer (P2P) paradigm is a promising approach for several distributed applications, among which distributed storage systems. SPINA is a software architecture that aims at encompassing indexing and retrieval of unstructured documents stored in a P2P network. This paper describes the current status of the design and the implementation of this software architecture.

In any Active Geographical Information System the reliability of any results of queries, analysis or reasoning depends on data quality (up-to-date data with properties of positional accuracy, consistency and so on). A system is built for violation detection under Topo-Semantic consistency with specific checking and correcting processes using a SSRO-Tree structure for spatial data access. Results indicate that the developed Constraint Violation Detection (CVD) system is powerful when compared with popular conventional systems. Three kinds of errors are identified which lead to three kinds of consistency, namely structural consisteny, geometric consistency and Topo-Semantic consistency.

Coordinated Atomic Actions (CAAs) have been introduced about ten years ago as a conceptual framework for developing fault-tolerant concurrent systems. All the work done since then extended the CAA framework with the capabilities to model, verify, and implement concurrent distributed systems.following pre-defined development methodologies. As a result, CAAs, compared to other approaches available, offer a rich set of means for engineering dependable systems. Nevertheless, it is sometimes difficult to have a global and analytical view of all the features available as this concept provides a number of features which need to be applied in combination. The main contribution of this paper is in presenting a complete state-of-the-art overview of the work done around CAAs from the three perspectives: the definitions of the fundamental concepts, their various semantics and the means supporting formal verification. This paper is useful for the potential CAAs users in helping them to avoid misinterpretation when employing all the available features. Finally, our paper should contribute in better understanding of the likely directions in which the CAA framework may evolve in the near future.

The popularity of online free album services in the recent prevailing Web2.0 paradigm has posed great challenges to the existing image storage systems. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of online image storage techniques from a system perspective. We present a novel framework called OBSI, which stands for an object based storage system for storing and retrieving images of online album services. In the design of OBSI, we employ a novel divide and conquer approach which subdivides OBSI into two layers: an object layer and a chunk layer. The chunk layer handles the "dirty work", such as disk space management and reliability guarantee. The object layer provides a uniform object storage and retrieval interface to applications. OBSI reduces disk access by employing a simple and yet effective storage allocation algorithm which allocates storage objects continuously as clustered to their respective metadata Experimental results show that OBSI provides high efficiency and throughput in image storage and retrieval services.

Middleware-based database replication approaches have emerged in the last few years as an alternative to traditional database replication implemented within the database kernel. A middleware approach enables third party vendors to provide high availability solutions, a growing practice nowadays in the software industry However, middleware solutions often lack scalability and exhibit a number of consistency and performance issues. The reason is that in most cases the middleware has to handle the database as a black box, and hence, cannot take advantage of the many optimizations implemented in the database kernel. Thus, middleware solutions often reimplement key functionality but cannot achieve the same efficiency as a kernel implementation. Reflection has been proposed during the last decade as a fruitful paradigm to separate non-functional aspects from functional ones, simplifying software development and maintenance whilst fostering reuse. However fully reflective databases are not feasible due to the high cost of reflection. Our claim is that by exposing some minimal database functionality through a lightweight reflective interface, efficient and scalable middleware database replication can be attained. In this paper we explore a wide variety of such lightweight reflective interfaces and discuss what kind of replication algorithms they enable. We also discuss implementation alternatives for some of these interfaces and evaluate their performance.

The research described in this paper investigates a novel multi-agent framework for testing 3-tier. distributed systems. This paper describes the framework architecture as well as the communication mechanism among agents in the architecture. Web-based application is examined as a case study to validate the proposed framework. The framework is considered as a step forward to automate testing for distributed systems.in order to enhance their reliability within an acceptable range of cost and time.

Open distributed computer systems.are some of the most successful structures ever designed for the computer community together with their undisputed benefits for users. However, their complexity has also introduced a few side-effects, most notably the unpredictable nature of the underlying environments and reconfiguration burdens imposed by environmental changes. Thus, to gain high level of system performance, a required level of reliability has to be maintained. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to analyze the underlying environmental faults and failures. This model provides an adaptable fault-tolerant approache in order to address unanticipated events and unpredictable hazards in distributed systems. Therefore, this model maintains the required reliability by analyzing the environment and selects the optimal replication strategy for existing conditions. This pragmatic and theoretically appealing approach is a part of the Juice system which supports adaptation properties for open distributed environments.
