The paper focuses on the event-driven signal processing and the application of irregular sampling theory and frames to the problems of the event-driven sampling and signal reconstruction. Our approach consists of the application of the frame algorithm enhanced with adaptive weights method to the reconstruction of the signal from the irregular samples obtained by the send-on-delta sampling scheme. We analyse the examples of signal recovery and set some perspectives for the further development.

Recently developed neuromorphic vision sensors present a high speed, event-based alternative to conventional vision in robotic systems. We present a method for the design of simple, low computation estimators that take advantage of the remarkable properties of these sensors to provide low latency, high bandwidth sensing for feedback control of fast dynamical systems. It is shown that under certain circumstances a simple transformation of the event stream from such a sensor can allow it to be treated as an asynchronous configuration sensor, with minimal computation required to achieve high speed signal reconstruction. These results are applicable to any robotic control problems requiring high performance visual feedback control with low computation.

This work is a contribution to enhance the signal processing chain required in mobile systems like satellites, cell phones, biomedical implants remote motors, etc. The system is powered by a battery therefore it must be power efficient. Filtering is a basic operation, almost required in every signal processing system. The classical filtering is time-invariant, the sampling frequency and the filter order remains unique. Therefore it can render a useless increase of the processing activity, especially in the case of sporadic signals. In this context an adaptive rate filtering technique, based on an event driven sampling is devised. It adapts the sampling frequency and the filter order by analysing the input signal characteristics. It correlates the processing activity to the signal variations. The computational complexity and the output quality of the proposed technique are compared to the classical one for a speech signal. Results show a drastic computational gain, of the proposed technique compared to the classical one, along with a comparable output quality.

In order to reduce communication in network control systems, it is of great interest to be able to synthesize event-triggered control laws from continuous-time controls. This work proposes a new rule to design event-based stabilizing controllers for linear systems. More precisely, based on a given reference system, a state observer, and a quadratic Lyapunov-like function, an event-based sampling algorithm has been designed. In this framework, the stability and the convergence rate of the controlled system towards its steady state depend on the dynamical properties of the reference system and the state observer and the used feedback gain. In addition, the event-triggering condition does not require the knowledge of the state vector of the process to be stabilized.

Time critical systems like all modern electric drives pose high demands onto control devices. For easier reconfiguration and better performance by load balancing the distribution of control is introduced. While the synchronization of algorithms is already hard on single control nodes the data handling on distributed systems is even harder. To approach this challenge the data handling could be solved by an event-driven middleware that propagates the data on change through the system. The possibilities of an event driven middleware are shown in a rebuild automated tabletop football table. One opponent is played by a distributed control with computer vision and electric drives to handle the bars. This project and its underlaid event based middleware is presented in this article.

Nowadays, control systems in outdoor and street lighting installations are more and more popular. Many of the outdoor lighting installations exist in direct precincts of buildings with building automation and control systems (BACS). In this paper we present case study with an experimental BACS of outdoor lighting system based on international standard ISO/IEC 14908. The event-based paradigm is the key feature of it. Following the event-based approach we have organized integrated platform to control our experimental outdoor lighting system. In our experiments we have been focused on communication reliability, easy integration of the control system and energy consumption reduction. We describe proposed functional strategies, the performed experiments and analyse the results. The first stages of this evaluation have shown that the event-based BACS provide higher comfort and energy reduction in the outdoor lighting.

Three different approaches to reduce the amount of communication in wireless control subject to packet losses have been evaluated in an extensive simulation study. The sampling approaches are: slow periodic, event-based and self-triggered sampling. They are ranked based on their integrated absolute error (IAE) control performance and also compared with fast periodic sampling. The three approaches have surprisingly equal control performance in the nominal case (without packet losses) for a wide range of test scenarios (process models, controller tunings etc.). With packet losses the importance of re-transmissions becomes evident.

This paper considers event-triggered control for the centroidal Voronoi coverage problem. In the proposed method, each agent updates its input when the error between the state and the centroid of its Voronoi cell at the last trigger time and those at the current time exceeds a threshold. We show that agents achieve the centroidal Voronoi coverage by the proposed dynamics in a distributed way. We also show that a trigger interval of each agent is strictly positive if the velocity of the centroid of its Voronoi cell is sufficiently slow.

In this paper, an event based control strategy for linear systems under stochastic disturbances is presented where the control input generator generates a control which tries to mimic a state feedback control between two successive events. The control input is generated in such a way that the error between the state of this system and the continuous state feedback system is bounded. The event generator triggers an event based on this error and the control input generator modifies its control input in such a way that it corroborates that the error generated up to this triggering instance is reduced to zero and thus it does not have any effect on the future states regardless of the stability of the plant. It is also shown that under this event triggering mechanism, the control input generator generates the control in such a way that the error bound could be made arbitrarily small.

Multiple agents sporadically exchange data over a broadcast network according to an event-based protocol to observe and control a dynamic process. The synthesis problem of each agent's state estimator and event generator, which decides whether information is broadcast or not, is addressed in this paper. In particular, a previously proposed LMI-synthesis procedure guaranteeing closed-loop stability is extended to incorporate an H-2 performance measure. The improved estimation performance of the extended design is illustrated in simulations of an inverted pendulum, which is stabilized by two agents.
