Data processing is usually based on uniformly sampled data in time. This sampling scheme is often unnecessary for non-stationary signals because samples are also taken in inactive regions. In case of embedded system, this useless samples significantly increase the power consumption. One solution to avoid this useless power consumption is the level crossing sampling scheme (LCSS). This method is not taking samples according to the time but according to amplitudes, therefore data are not sampling during inactive region. To optimize LCSS, thresholds need to be appropriately placed along the amplitude range of the input signal. In this paper, we present an algorithm to determine automatically these thresholds. This algorithm has been tested on experimental biomedical signals. We demonstrate that we could ensure the information and in the same time drastically decrease the number of processed samples.

Capabilities of the devices installed in a smart home are often fully accessible only to qualified integrators. As the users become more interested in setting up their home automation devices by their own, there is a need to bridge the gap between the magnitude of possibilities offered by home automation devices and the limitations of the methods accessible to the user. This paper proposes an event-based language that allows defining of home automation control routines in a form of statements which are uncomplicated, easy to learn for intermediate users, while being easy to interpret by microcontrollers with low processing power that are widespread in home automation devices. All the complexity related to defining rules has been covered by the language that provides access to various capabilities of a smart home under self-explanatory function names. The mechanism that executes statements written in the proposed language has been successfully implemented on a hardware platform with 8-bit microcontroller. KNX standard has been used for communication with home automation devices in this research in examples and case studies. During the test the proposed solution proved to be reliable and efficient for purpose of writing and executing event-based home automation control routines.

In the past few years, as an alternative for time-triggered control, event-triggered control (ETC) has been investigated for networked control systems (NCS). ETC is a control strategy where the control algorithm is executed only when a special condition is satisfied. In this paper, a solution to find an appropriate bandwidth for event-based control systems over wireless networks is proposed. Moreover, it is shown how the delay bound of network can be affected by control system. These two results are achieved by applying network calculus theorem to a control system. For efficient use of network resources, a new triggering algorithm is proposed. An advantage of proposed algorithm is that the minimum time between two consecutive events is considered as a designable control parameter and it can guarantee a lower bound on input traffic to the network. An illustrative case study of a NCS based on IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed event-triggered algorithm and investigate the effect of bandwidth allocation on NCS.

In this paper, a discrete state feedback Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) for event-triggered control is presented. To ensure zero steady state error in the case of such controllers, one normally extends the states with an integral action. Instead of using integral action, the idea is to estimate the disturbance causing the steady state error and use this to extend the states. A Lyapunov-based event triggering function is proposed. Practical results using a gyroscope actuator are presented and compared to a classical time-triggered controller. The obtained results demonstrate the simplicity and efficiency of the proposed approach.

The use of supervising of position control in modern industrial automation and building automation systems is becoming more and more common. In addition to basic features and reliability of these systems, increasingly important in their functionalities are opportunities for inter-communication and exchange the process data with other subsystems, visualization of their work or archiving of this data. The interesting specifics of those particular systems are those executed as a unique solution for scientific purposes. This paper based on selected, completed projects, presents the demands of modern automation and control systems - hardware and software system solutions to achieve their desired functionality. It presents both: a way to integrate various systems at the hardware level, but also a way of software objects and communication protocols used for development of control of the whole system.

An event-based motor controller design is presented. The system is designed to solve the classic inverted pendulum problem by using a robotic platform and a totally neuro-inspired event-based mechanism. Specifically, DVS retinas provide feedback and an FPGA implements control. The robotic platform used is the so called 'pencil balancer'. The retinas provide visual information to the FPGA that processes it and obtains the center of mass of the pencil. Once this center of mass is averaged over time, it is used joint with the cart position provided by a flat potentiometer bar to compute the angle of the pencil from the vertical. The angle is delivered to an event-based Proportional-Derivative (PD) controller that drives the DC motor using Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to accomplish the control objective. The results show an accurate, real-time and efficient controller design.

In this paper, the problem of event-triggered integrated fault detection, isolation and control (E-IFDIC) for discrete-time linear systems is considered. Using a filter to represent, characterize, and specify the E-IFDIC module, a multi-objective formulation of the problem is presented based on the H-infinity/H- performance criterion. It is shown that by using an event-triggered technique applied to both the sensor and filter nodes, the amount of data that is sent through the sensor-to-filter and filter-to-actuator channels are dramatically decreased. A set of linear matrix inequality (LMI) feasibility conditions are derived to ensure the solvability of the problem as well as to simultaneously obtain the filter parameters and the event-triggered conditions. A numerical example is also provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed design methodology.

This paper describes a digital implementation of a parallel and pipe lined spiking convolutional neural network (S-ConvNet) core for processing spikes in an event-driven system. event-driven vision systems use typically as sensor some bio-inspired spiking device, such as the popular Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS). DVS cameras generate spikes related to changes in light intensity. In this paper we present a 2D convolution event-driven processing core with 128x128 pixels. S-ConvNet is an event-Driven processing method to extract event features from an input event flow. The nature of spiking systems is highly parallel, in general. Therefore, S-ConvNet processors can benefit from the parallelism offered by Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to accelerate the operation. Using 3 stages of pipeline and a parallel structure, results in updating the state of a 128 neuron row in just 12ns. This improves with respect to previously reported approaches.

The principles of event-based control appear to be a backbone of many self-coordinating natural systems. Populations of flashing fireflies and cells of the cardiac pacemakers are believed to reach synchrony via event-based interactions, known as the pulse coupling. Synchronization via pulse coupling is also widely used in wireless sensor networks, allowing to avoid the packet exchange. In spite of serious attention to networks of coupled oscillators, there is a lack of results on their synchronization under general topology and phase-response curves. The most general, to the best of the authors' knowledge, result of this type (Wang et al., 2012) establishes synchronization of oscillators with a delay-advance phase-response curve under the assumption of strongly connected network topology. In this paper we relax the latter assumption to the existence of an oriented spanning tree, which is also necessary for the synchronization, being commonly adopted in multi-agent control.

It has been shown in previous works that non-uniform sampling and processing is a better scheme than the uniform sampling to sample and process low activity signals. Non-uniform sampling technique generates fewer samples, which means less data to process and lower power consumption. Furthermore, asynchronous logic is known to be data-driven. It proves to be more adapted to the non-uniform sampling than synchronous logic. It is thus a better alternative to design low power data-processing circuits. In this paper, we present an overview of the non-uniform sampling scheme. It also describes the architectures of a processing function (Finite Impulse Response filter) in synchronous and asynchronous technologies. These circuits have been implemented on an Altera EP2C8 FPGA in order to extract and compare their activities profiles.
