Recent advances in hardware technologies raise new opportunities for architecting storage systems to exploit emerging NVRAM memory devices, fast remote-memory RDMA networking, and large numbers of processor cores. In this paper, we present Telepathy, a novel data access protocol for a distributed key-value storage system constructed around NVRAM and RDMA. Telepathy supports replicated data storage for fault tolerance and guarantees strong consistency while supporting high-volume concurrent read/write access from multiple client nodes. Our read protocol can perform largely silent consistent reads from any of the replica nodes holding an object, while our write protocol exploits remote atomic and non-volatile buffers to silently perform write contention resolution. Our experiments on an RDMA-enabled cluster using YCSB benchmarks show that Telepathy can achieve microsecond-range reads and writes with small tail latencies, GB-range data access bandwidth with small CPU utilization, and data consistency guarantees.

Developing software for scientific applications that require the integration of diverse types of computing, instruments, and data present challenges that are distinct from commercial software. These applications require scale, and the need to integrate various programming and computational models with evolving and heterogeneous infrastructure. Pervasive and effective abstractions for distributed infrastructures are thus critical; however, the process of developing abstractions for scientific applications and infrastructures is not well understood. While theory-based approaches for system development are suited for well-defined, closed environments, they have severe limitations for designing abstractions for scientific systems and applications. The design science research (DSR) method provides the basis for designing practical systems that can handle real-world complexities at all levels. In contrast to theory-centric approaches, DSR emphasizes both practical relevance and knowledge creation by building and rigorously evaluating all artifacts. We show how DSR provides a well-defined framework for developing abstractions and middleware systems for distributed systems. Specifically, we address the critical problem of distributed resource management on heterogeneous infrastructure over a dynamic range of scales, a challenge that currently limits many scientific applications. We use the pilot-abstraction, a widely used resource management abstraction for high-performance, high throughput, big data, and streaming applications, as a case study for evaluating the DSR activities. For this purpose, we analyze the research process and artifacts produced during the design and evaluation of the pilot-abstraction. We find DSR provides a concise framework for iteratively designing and evaluating systems. Finally, we capture our experiences and formulate different lessons learned.

Private information retrieval has been reformulated in an information-theoretic perspective in recent years. The two most important parameters considered for a PIR scheme in a distributed storage system are the storage overhead and PIR rate. The complexity of the computations done by the servers for the various tasks of the distributed storage system is an important parameter in such systems which didn't get enough attention in PIR schemes. As a consequence, we take into consideration a third parameter, the access complexity of a PIR scheme, which characterizes the total amount of data to be accessed by the servers for responding to the queries throughout a PIR scheme. We use a general covering codes approach as the main tool for improving the access complexity. With a given amount of storage overhead, the ultimate objective is to characterize the tradeoff between the rate and access complexity of a PIR scheme. This covering codes approach raises a new interesting coding problem of generalized coverings similarly to the well-known generalized Hamming weights.

The Workshop on Scalable Networks for Advanced Computing systems is a venue for discussions in the networks community that encompasses the full networks stack, ranging from high-level tools and interfaces, down to low-level hardware. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers to present research on the next-generation of large scale interconnects for scientific applications. In particular, our aim is to provide a venue for discussion of the full network stack from user level interfaces (i.e., MPI, PGAS) to the hardware level (i.e., network offload, hardware support for active messages, routing protocols). Workshop topics include: networks for exascale systems, networks for multi-facility workflows, new communication models and architectures for large scale systems, and network interface and hardware co-design.

Profiling the archival storage system in scientific computing environments has received much less attention compared to the parallel file system, but is equally important since it stores the final data products safely, for a long duration. In this paper, we analyze eight years worth of data transfer logs for accessing the archival file system (HPSS) in the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), which has been hosting the world's largest supercomputers and file systems. Our analysis encompasses about 135 million data transfer activities to the 80 PB High Performance Storage System (HPSS), between 2010 and 2017. We analyze the logs from several dimensions, including studying the workload characteristics (e.g., access patterns, frequency of accesses and temporal behavior), file system characteristics (e.g., directory depth, file system scaling trends, file types), and scientific user behavior (e.g., domain-specific usage and organization). Based on the analysis, we derive insights into the future evolution of the archive in terms of provisioning, desired features and functionality from the archive software, role and right sizing of the archive tiers, quota management, and the importance of smart and efficient metadata and storage management. We believe our study will prove useful for both operating current archival storage and the better provisioning of future systems.

The paper describes an approach to parallelization of Normal Bayes classifier training algorithm for distributed data. In the process of distributed data analysis and the algorithm performance, the results fail to join properly. Due to this, the algorithm is to be performed in a distributed manner For this purpose, we use representation of the algorithm as a sequential composition of functions. The algorithm is parallelized to work with data distributed horizontally and vertically. This allows placing parallel functions of the algorithm at data nodes. Experiments show that transfer of computations to sources allow to decrease training time and network traffic. We implement the algorithm variants as an extension of the industrial-strength Java-based library Xelopes. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

distributed storage systems typically need data to be stored redundantly to guarantee data durability and reliability. While the conventional approach towards this objective is to store multiple replicas, today's unprecedented data growth rates encourage modern distributed storage systems to employ Erasure Coding (EC) techniques, which can achieve better storage efficiency. Various hardware-based EC schemes have been proposed in the community to leverage the advanced compute capabilities on modern data center and cloud environments. Currently, there is no unified and easy way for distributed storage systems to fully exploit multiple devices such as CPUs, GPUs, and network devices (i.e., multi-rail support) to perform EC operations in parallel;thus, leading to the under-utilization of the available compute power. In this paper, we first introduce an analytical model to analyze the design scope of efficient EC schemes in distributed storage systems. Guided by the performance model, we propose UMR-EC, a Unified and Multi-Rail Erasure Coding library that can fully exploit heterogeneous EC coders. Our proposed interface is complemented by asynchronous semantics with optimized metadata-free scheme and EC rate-aware task scheduling that can enable a highly-efficient I/O pipeline. To show the benefits and effectiveness of UMR-EC, we re-design HDFS 3.x write/read pipelines based on the guidelines observed in the proposed performance model. Our performance evaluations show that our proposed designs can outperform the write performance of replication schemes and the default HDFS EC coder by 3.7x - 6.1x and 2.4x - 3.3x, respectively, and can improve the performance of read with failure recoveries up to 5.1x compared with the default HDFS EC coder. Compared with the fastest available CPU coder (i.e., ISA-L), our proposed designs have an improvement of up to 66.0% and 19.4% for write and read with failure recoveries, respectively.
