High performance parallel computing demands careful synchronization, timing, performance isolation and control, as well as the avoidance of OS and other types of noise. The employment of soft real-time systems toward these ends has already shown considerable promise, particularly for distributed memory machines. As processor core counts grow rapidly, a natural question is whether similar promise extends to the node. To address this question, we present the design, implementation, and performance evaluation of a hard real-time scheduler specifically for high performance parallel computing on shared memory nodes built on x64 processors, such as the Xeon Phi. Our scheduler is embedded in a kernel framework that is already specialized for high performance parallel run-times and applications, and that meets the basic requirements needed for a real-time OS (RTOS). The scheduler adds hard real-time threads both in their classic, individual form, and in a group form in which a group of parallel threads execute in near lock-step using only scalable, per-hardware-thread scheduling. On a current generation Intel Xeon Phi, the scheduler is able to handle timing constraints down to resolution of similar to 13,000 cycles (similar to 10 mu s), with synchronization to within similar to 4,000 cycles (similar to 3 mu s) among 255 parallel threads. The scheduler isolates a parallel group and is able to provide resource throttling with commensurate application performance. We also show that in some cases such fine-grain control over time allows us to eliminate barrier synchronization, leading to performance gains, particularly for fine-grain BSP workloads.

Affix-based search is a fundamental functionality for storage systems. It allows users to find desired datasets, where attributes of a dataset match an affix. While building inverted index to facilitate efficient affix-based keyword search is a common practice for standalone databases and for desktop file systems, building local indexes or adopting indexing techniques used in a standalone data store is insufficient for high-performance computing (HPC) systems due to the massive amount of data and distributed nature of the storage devices within a system. In this paper, we propose distributed Adaptive Radix Tree (DART), to address the challenge of distributed affix-based keyword search on HPC systems. This trie-based approach is scalable in achieving efficient affix-based search and alleviating imbalanced keyword distribution and excessive requests on keywords at scale. Our evaluation at different scales shows that, comparing with the "full string hashing" use case of the most popular distributed indexing technique -distributed Hash Table (DHT), DART achieves up to 55x better throughput with prefix search and with suffix search, while achieving comparable throughput with exact and infix searches. Also, comparing to the "initial hashing" use case of DHT, DART maintains a balanced keyword distribution on distributed nodes and alleviates excessive query workload against popular keywords.

Coding for distributed computing supports low-latency computation by relieving the burden of straggling workers. While most existing works assume a simple master-worker model, we consider a hierarchical computational structure consisting of groups of workers, motivated by the need to reflect the architectures of real-world distributed computing systems. In this work, we propose a hierarchical coding scheme for this model, as well as analyze its decoding cost and expected computation time. Specifically, we first provide upper and lower bounds on the expected computing time of the proposed scheme. We also show that our scheme enables efficient parallel decoding, thus reducing decoding costs by orders of magnitude over non-hierarchical schemes. When considering both decoding cost and computing time, the proposed hierarchical coding is shown to outperform existing schemes in many practical scenarios.

With the transition to the digital economy, the demand for specialists with advanced knowledge Mining Big Data, including using high-performance computing systems, is growing. The international School of Information Technologies "Data Science" was created on the initiative of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The goal of the IT School is to train highly qualified IT specialists in the field of Data Science who will be able to use Big Data analytics to solve scientific and practical problems. In this paper, we discuss the features, structure, and properties of high-performance computing platforms that are used in educational processes and research activities of the IT School at Dubna State University and Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (PRUE). The educational program of the IT School at Dubna State University was developed taking into account the JINR personnel requirements and uses services and resources of the HybriLIT platform to help with students’ practical engagement for effective learning. To solve economic and socially important problems, a universal platform that includes a high-performance heterogeneous subsystem, a cloud infrastructure, and a storage system was created at PRUE. The scientific laboratory "Cloud technologies and Big Data analytics" of PRUE elaborated a special educational program "Introduction to distributed computing and Big Data analytics" on the basis of these resources. The living environment monitoring is a critical issue today. Many related researches focused on developing the living environment monitoring systems by using the web-based technology, but such information systems would increase the difficulty of promotion and migration to others, because of needing well-trained engineers to achieve and maintain such information system. This research focuses on developing the weather monitoring system. The main goal of the research is to use the technology of message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) as roles of the communication layer instead of direct-connecting database, which can isolate the system migration complexity from heterogeneous relational database management system (RDBMS) and construct a distributed information system easily. Finally the contributions are demonstrated as implementation of the IoT-based weather monitoring system. The prototyping of the weather monitoring system is implemented and deployed at Wu-Tso elementary school for the students' learning of nature science and activity environment. In addition, the system is implemented using open sources and is easy to be deployed and scalable.

In applications of storage systems to modern key-value stores, the stored data is highly dynamic due to frequent updates from the system write clients. The multi-version coding problem has been formulated to study the cost of storing dynamic data in asynchronous distributed storage systems. In this problem, previous work considered a completely decentralized system where a server is not aware of which versions of the data are received by the other servers. In this paper, we relax this assumption and study a system where a server may acquire side information of the versions propagated to some other servers. In particular, we study a storage system with n servers that store nu totally ordered independent versions of a message. Each server receives a subset of these nu versions that defines the state of that server. Assuming that the servers are distributed in a ring, a server is aware of which versions have been received by its h-hop neighbors. If the server is aware of the states of (n - 2) other servers, we show that this side information can result in a better storage cost as compared with the case where there is no side information. Through an information-theoretic converse, we identify scenarios where, even if the server is aware of the states of (n - 3)/2 other servers, the side information may not help in improving the worst-case storage cost beyond the case where servers have no side information.

Recent studies investigated the performance of parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES) on Intel Xeon Phi many-core processors, but generally reported underwhelming performance results, especially at high scales when all cores and thread contexts are fully loaded. While the lack of scalability in an earlier study on a Knights Corner (KC) processor is an artifact of physical limitations of the KC system, performance challenges on a Knights Landing (KNL) system partially stem from a slower global virtual time (GVT) computation algorithm used in that study. In this paper, we re-examine PDES performance on KNL under more efficient GVT algorithms to alleviate the GVT bottleneck. Specifically, we compare a synchronous GVT algorithm based on barrier synchronization, and two asynchronous GVT implementations: a modified Mattern's algorithm for shared memory systems and a recently-proposed wait-free algorithm. Using the ROSS simulator, we demonstrate that minimizing the GVT bottleneck results in significant improvement in scalability, allowing the simulation to scale with performance all the way to 250 threads (per chip). Interestingly, we observe that while for the balanced models the wait-free algorithm is a clear winner, barrier-based GVT provides significantly better results for imbalanced models executed at high scale. We also perform detailed simulation profiling to understand the underlying reasons for these performance trends.
