Formula or schema for computing the best and worst case execution times of a variety of parallel program constructs are presented. Timing schema are proposed for processes that do not interact but synchronize at their start and end, for shared variable interactions through critical sections and general semaphores, and for distributed message passing and remote procedure call. Also included are representative implementations that obey the schema. In addition various forms of underlying hardware contentions and indeterminacies are discussed, including how to incorporate some of these. It is concluded that predictable timing behavior in concurrent systems is indeed a possibility using the schema approach.< >

Nonuniform memory access time (referred to as NUMA) is an important feature in the design of large scale shared memory multiprocessors. However, one implication of the NUMA architecture is that locality of the data is crucial to performance. In the absence of any system support, the programmer is forced to explicitly manage these locality issues, significantly increasing the development time for parallel applications. The authors have enhanced the uniform system programming environment of BBN to allow a programmer to easily separate data structures based on expected reference patterns instead of requiring an understanding of the NUMA memory architecture as the basis for allocation decisions. An operating system providing dynamic page placement can exploit the more homogeneous allocation of data structures to virtual pages.< >

The authors study generalized hypercube (GHC) interconnection networks. This network provides a rich interconnection topology, is symmetric, and potentially forms the basis of a very reliable architecture. They propose a general taxonomy for adaptive routing protocols, and identify three classes of protocols for generalized hypercubes in particular. These protocols are fully distributed, resilient to link failures or bottlenecks, and require comparatively little additional routing overhead over current fixed path routing protocols. The performance of the three protocols is evaluated for a 64 node circuit switched GHC. The authors propose metrics in addition to the commonly used metrics of latency and path length, to capture the unique behavior of such adaptive protocols.< >

The authors compare six well known and two new load balancing strategies on torus and ring topologies of different sizes and workload characteristics. Through simulations on a large transputer network, they show that all strategies behave differently under the workload of process and data migration. The two new algorithms based on the gradient model method are shown to be robust to both kinds of workloads. Thus, these new algorithms are good candidates for distributed operating systems running on large networks, where the workload characteristics can not be determined in advance.< >

A mixed-mode parallel machine's processing elements (PEs) are capable of operating in and switching between the SIMD and MIMD modes of parallelism. The paper analyzes various mappings of image correlation algorithms onto a mixed-mode parallel processing system. The trade-offs that exist between the SIMD and MIMD modes explain why some sequences of instructions are performed better in one mode than in the other and are the primary basis employed in comparing different mappings of a parallel algorithm onto a mixed-mode system.< >

This paper discusses detection of unstable predicates in a distributed program. Some applications of this are in program debugging and testing. The authors provide a predicate logic in the form of a grammar giving the rewrite rules for constructing predicates about a distributed program. This predicate logic is general enough to describe many conditions programmers are interested in. These predicates may depend on the global state of the system and may be unstable in nature. However, the detection algorithms given guarantee to detect such predicates should one ever become true. The main results of this work are a logic for expressing unstable distributed predicates and detection methods for certain unstable distributed predicates.< >

The hypercube architecture is a popular topology for many parallel processing applications. Several researchers have analysed the performance and dependability aspects of this architecture or its variants. Fault tolerance by reconfiguration is another important problem in a large distributed computing environment, for continued operation of the hypercube multiprocessors after the failure of one or more i-subcubes and/or links. This paper considers the fault tolerance issue and presents an algebraic technique, called ATARIC, to analyse the problem. ATARIC (algebraic technique to analyse reconfiguration for fault tolerance in a hypercube) uses algebraic operators to identify the maximum dimensional fault-free subcube, and it thus helps in achieving graceful degradation of the system. The authors analyse the complexity of their algorithm.< >

This paper defines parallel algorithms for the cooperative combination of data from multiple low-level vision modules. Weak continuity constraints are used to formulate individual early vision modules which detect intensity edges, optic flow from motion, and disparity from stereo. Vision modules are coupled together via line processes which explicitly mark discontinuities in their respective image properties. A Hopfield neural network is used for function minimization with continuation on the sigmoid function to avoid local minima. These algorithms are mapped to the AMT distributed Array Processor (DAP). Extensive experiments are performed on the DAP to show how vision integration can be used to reduce the impact of noise and speed algorithm convergence.< >

The authors describe I-CEM (Intelligent-Communication System based on E-mail), a system designed for supporting computer-based communication when promoting collaborative work by multiple persons in a project team. Members in a project team often use formalized templates which imply the official information. Nevertheless these kinds of templates are suitable for storing and sharing among all the members. These templates cause a shortage of information and misunderstanding between the senders and the receivers. I-CEM provides the functions of (1) adding supplementary information to the formalized information, (2) classifying received messages and taking actions based on user-defined rules, and (3) making it easy to reuse the information. The I-CEM prototype is implemented on SPARCsation and by using XView toolkit (X.R11V4) and E-mail.< >

Summary form only given. The authors focus on the performance of integrated specialized data managers. In particular, they focus on the customizations of parallel executions of data manager operators in a variety of computer configurations. This is done by specifying the glue that connects data manager operators in a way that is independent of the computer configuration; and then providing the ability to transparently target the execution to a variety of computer configurations. parallelization of data manager operators built using Papyrus services is a challenging problem, but a more challenging problem is the parallelization of data manager operators that are built independently of Papyrus and are therefore black boxes to Papyrus. Papyrus is a set of modules and services that enables the parallelization and integration of specialized data managers into one execution environment. Papyrus programs can be transparently targeted to different hardware configurations and can dynamically adjust at runtime to the number of available resources. A Papyrus System consists of a number of clients interfacing to a Papyrus Server. The Server consists of several integrated data managers executing on a multiprocessor system.< >
