Problems of dynamic backward error recovery for asynchronous process systems are considered. A new technique of recovery providing for transparent dynamic structurization of processes based on the concept of dynamic conversations is suggested. A dynamic scheme of consistent recovery based on them is proposed. To control resource expenditures on fault-tolerance, four types of control over conversations are introduced.< >

The design, implementation, and performance of a main memory file system are presented. The implementation is based on a two-stage abstract parallel processing model. The objective of this model is to maximize throughput and minimize response time. To maximize throughput, lock structures, access structures, and shared variables are distributed among the shared memories. A novel approach based on hash-based parallel accesses is used. The effect of lock conflict is minimized by an optimistic locking protocol. Analytical models are developed for hot spot memory accesses, distributed data accesses, and space-versus-time tradeoffs for fast accesses to records. On the basis of the performance results of these models, a high-speed KDL-RAM (key accessed, dynamically reconfigurable, distributed locked random-access memory) file system has been implemented on the Butterfly PLUS parallel Processor. Various performance results of this system are given. It is shown that the performance improvement of this system is considerably better than BBN's Butterfly RAMFile system on the Butterfly PLUS parallel Processor.< >

The paper presents theoretical analysis of the deterministic complexity of the load balancing problem (LBP). Because of difficulty of the general problem, research in the area mostly restricts itself to probabilistic or approximation algorithms, or to the average behavior of a network. The paper provides deterministic analysis of the problem for general networks. It focuses on the worst-case complexity analysis of the problem. It shows certain cases of the LBP to be NP-complete. The paper also discusses situations closely related to computer networks, where there is a global view of load distribution in the network; it provides a polynomial algorithm for solving the load balancing problem in this network.< >

The butterfly parallel system has a regular and simple interconnection pattern, making it suitable for VLSI/WSI implementation. The authors propose an effective fault-tolerant technique for the circular butterfly parallel system to ensure its rigid full butterfly structure even in the presence of failures. A resulting butterfly system with L levels involves (1/log/sub 2/L)% spare PEs and roughly 50% additional links. Reconfiguration in response fault is easy and can be performed in a distributed manner. The analytic results show that the proposed design exhibits significantly improved reliability.< >

The authors propose a distributed test algorithm for multiple processor systems where a central fault-free entity such as a host computer does not exist for any purpose such as control, fault-diagnosis, and system reconfiguration. The proposed algorithm is dynamic, i.e. testing assignments are not fixed ahead of time but rather are made as processors or interprocessor links fail. This dynamic property of the algorithm improves system performance by reducing the number of testers assigned to every processor while allowing the existence of multiple faulty processors and interprocessor communication links at every round of testing. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the given approach.< >

The OIS (Operational Integration System) data model and query language are presented. The main goal of OIS is to provide the application environments with a uniform interface for accessing data managed by heterogeneous systems. Conceptually, OIS can be depicted as a three-level system. The integration data model level allows distributed applications to be coded in object-oriented style. The operational interface abstract level and the operational interface implementation level feature the operational mapping between application environments and distributed heterogeneous systems. It is shown how OIS features can be embedded in C++. The prototype of OIS has confirmed the modeling features of the operational integration technique adopted. Three test driving applications have been selected: (1) a file-based application for the management of textual data, using either indexed or sequential access files; (2) a graphic database related to a computer-aided-design management system; (3) a public data bank, with a TTY-oriented interface protocol accessed through telephone lines. The obtained results have encouraged the developers to enhance the OIS implementation.< >

An approach to exploiting coarse-grained parallelism in database applications is presented. This approach combines the database facilities of ADAMS with the dependency detection and parallel execution facilities of Mentat. The approach to providing mode-two parallelism is to make changes behind the ADAMS language interface, thus insulating users from the changes in operating environment. In addition, by merging with a mature parallel/distributed computing technology, it has been possible to capitalize on existing software to provide these facilities and avoid building them from scratch.< >

The authors describe a way of noticeably reducing the description cost of database operations executed in distributed computing environments through the design of a declarative language to describe database operations, the development of program transformation techniques to improve efficiency at execution time, and the clarification of prerequisites to execute the programs in distributed computing environments. With the language, database operations are described as functions which manipulate streams. To describe stream manipulation at a higher level, the language SPL (Set Programming Language) is based on mathematical comprehensive notation for sets (ZF expressions). With this language, database operation implementors need not specify any communication primitives; a language processing system automatically translates the programs into procedural programs which include communication primitives.< >

The QR algorithm has proven to be the most successful sequential algorithm for finding all eigenvalues of a dense nonsymmetric matrix. Recently, several parallel implementations of the QR algorithm have been proposed. These implementations have all been based on the column-wrapped storage scheme. While column-wrapped storage has been used to obtain asymptotically 100% efficiency for many algorithms for solving linear systems, eigenvalue algorithms using such storage have achieved, at best, asymptotically constant efficiency. The authors present a parallel implementation of the QR algorithm that makes use of an alternate storage scheme that allows them to achieve asymptotically 100% efficiency. They also present a technique, which they call bundling, that further improves the observed efficiency of the parallel implementation.< >

A knowledge allocation method for distributed intelligent system system is proposed and applied the method to the cellular robotic system CEBOT distributed systems. A new matrix notation is proposed to express the communication link and states of the knowledge allocation, knowledge based structure matrix. A notation for describing a given task is also proposed. The efficiency of the method, which the amount of system information communication is shown by simulations. It is concluded that the proposed knowledge allocation method is applicable to general distributed systems.< >
