The problem of distributing M interacting program modules of a given homogeneous random workload over P identical processors for optimizing execution time is examined. The execution time modeling allows full concurrency of activities among different processors but cascades for each processor its computation time, internal communications, external communications, and synchronization/contention delays. The results obtained express the optimality conditions in terms of the various statistical and deterministic parameters of the problem: number of modules; number of processors; mean value of module run time; probabilities and mean values of intraprocessor, interprocessor, and synchronization/contention communications overheads. Optimal load distributions are found to be either even or single-processor assignments, albeit for different conditions than stipulated in previous results.< >

The paper considers a large scale, cache-based multiprocessor that is interconnected by a hierarchical network such as hierarchical buses or a multistage interconnection network (MIN). An adaptive cache coherence scheme for the system is proposed based on a hardware approach that handles multiple shared reads efficiently while reducing the network traffic. The new protocol allows multiple copies of a shared data block in the hierarchical network, but minimizes the cache coherence overhead by dynamically partitioning the network into sharing and non-sharing regions based on program behaviors. The new cache coherence scheme effectively utilizes the bandwidth of the hierarchical networks and exploits the locality properties of parallel algorithms. The simulation results show that the new protocol gives 15% to 30% performance improvement over some existing cache coherence schemes for the similar systems over a wide range of workload parameters.< >

Dynamic load balancing solves the remapping problem in a multicomputer system at run time, where many processes need to be allocated evenly to multiple processor nodes. The mean is to migrate processes from busy to idle nodes in order to achieve higher resource utilization. The authors have implemented a distributed load balancer at an iPSC/2 hypercube computer system, which uses heuristic methods to balance the system load adaptively. These heuristic methods cooperate with a central supervisor at the host machine, and invoke the load balancing activities under decentralized control. Benchmark experiments have shown that the proposed dynamic load balancing methods can speed up the parallel execution of benchmark programs significantly.< >

The importance of production systems in artificial intelligence has been repeatedly demonstrated by a number of expert systems. Much effort has therefore been expended on finding an efficient processing mechanism for processing production systems. Variable resolution actors called macro actors (a processing mechanism for production systems) are studied. A macro token, which is a collection of primitive data tokens, is introduced as a companion to macro actors. An approach to obtaining medium-grain parallelism, called macro actors tokens, is investigated. A set of guidelines is identified in the contest of production systems to derive well-formed macro actors from primitive macro actors. parallel pattern matching is written in macro actors/tokens to be executed on a macro dataflow simulator. Simulation results demonstrate that the macro approach can be an efficient implementation of the production system paradigm.< >

Proposes a parallel machine architecture which incorporates an ultra-multiprocessing facility for parallel execution of functional programs. The machine performs parallel executions along a multi-thread control flow called datarol. A datarol program, instead of using a program counter, the instructions to be executed next are explicitly specified in the preceding instructions. The explicitly specified continuation linkage enables the concurrent execution of the instructions of different function instances, as well as the parallel execution of multi-thread control flow within a function instance. Based on a continuation-based execution model, the datarol processor is designed to implement an efficient parallel execution mechanism needed for ultra-multi-processing. First, the datarol concept is discussed in comparison with a dataflow model. Next, the datarol machine architecture and datarol processor design are described. Finally, the evaluation of the datarol architecture is shown.< >

Adaptive task sharing in a distributed computing system involves system state elimination and decision-making under uncertainty. The paper presents experimental results of an implementation of a novel adaptive task sharing algorithm on a distributed system consisting of VAX stations connected by a local area network. The adaptive task sharing algorithm incorporates decentralized decision-making and decentralized estimation. It introduces metrics for evaluating the quality of decision-making and the quality of system state estimation. Quantitative results on the performance of decision-making, performance of estimation, and the overall performance are presented. The results indicate that the quality of system state estimation is improved by probing more nodes. The quality of task sharing decisions, and the overall performance of the system in turn, is heavily dependent on the quality of system state estimation when the task size is not very small.< >

The authors describe the development of parallel implementations for the bin packing problem. Bin packing algorithms are studied to understand various resource allocation issues and the impact of the different packing heuristics on the packing efficiency. The seemingly serial nature of the bin packing simulation has prohibited previous experimentations from going beyond sizes of several thousands bins. The authors show that by adopting fairly simple data parallel algorithms a linear speedup is possible. Sizes of up to hundreds of thousands of bins have been simulated for different parameters and heuristics. The authors focussed on the well known first-fit heuristic. They also considered another potentially superior heuristic, k-delayed best fit.< >

The paper constitutes the proceedings of a panel in which distinguished researchers from academia and industrial research organizations were invited to identify the crucial problem for today's database technology. C.K. Baru notes that the outstanding problem for today's database technology is the exploitation of available and anticipated hardware to provide efficient support for the processing of current and proposed data models employed at the conceptual level. D. Batory points out that object-oriented DBMSs (database management systems) offer a tight coupling of programming languages with database systems; extensible DBMSs offer the ability to customize and optimize the internals of a DBMS to suit specific application. He believes that these combined technologies offer the ideal system of the future. D. Hsiao examines problems in database software and database hardware. H.V. Jagadish points out that faster access, greater functionality, and better interfaces have been and will continue to be important goals for any database system. C. Pu notes that choosing the operating system for the development of a new database management system has always been a difficult tradeoff between overhead and portability. Finally, S. Navathe suggests that database research has not paid enough attention to the needs of the consumers of data.< >

A fault-tolerant distributed database system with inference capability, consisting of a query parser and analyzer, an information module, and an inference system, is described. The information module provides the allocation and availability information of all the attributes in the system. The inference system consists of a knowledge base and an inference engine. The correlated knowledge among the attributes is represented in rules and stored in the knowledge base. During normal operations, all the database fragments are accessible; thus the processor based on the query process plan accesses the required attributes and processes the query. When network partition occurs, if the required attribute is inaccessible, the information module and the inference system will be invoked. On the basis of the required query operations provided by the parser and the correlated knowledge among the attributes, the inference engine modifies the original query to a new one so that all the required data for the query are accessible from the requested site. Depending on the type of query, the physical allocation of the database fragments, and the database domain semantics, the modified query may provide the exact, approximate, or summarized information of the original query.< >

Data-flow principles of execution provide an elegant way to ensure at runtime that instructions can be executed asynchronously in a parallel environment. However, while the conventional von Neumann model of interpretation has a very rigid ordering of instructions, it is the very asynchronous character of the data-flow model of execution that introduces conflicts when 'state' tasks (such as I/O operations) must share common data objects. In order to execute I/O operations safely and in parallel, an algorithm to detect and classify cases of potential conflicts (hazards) has been developed and is described. It is based upon localizing the effect of I/O operations by splitting the data-flow graph into two subgraphs: (a) the computation subgraph, and (b) the I/O subgraph. The scheme presented thus enables the creation and interaction of both subgraphs, which in turn yields a deterministic execution. Furthermore, the proposed scheme enables the distributed execution of I/O operations as permitted by data dependencies.< >
