We report on our development of a new course: Introduction to Performance Measurement, Modeling and Analysis (IPMMA). The first offering was in Fall 2014, with a second offering in Winter 2015 in finals week at this writing. The course focuses on the fundamentals of measuring, analyzing, and modeling computer performance. As we cover the basics we will move through a set of case studies, allowing us to apply the techniques to increasingly complex problems. Case studies used in Fall 2014 include: multithreaded code;web servers;MPI code;virtualized servers;and Map/Reduce - Hadoop. In Winter 2015 we added a case study for single server queue simulation. These case studies include hands-on programming exercises both during class time and as take-home exercises. We use a variety of performance tools through the course to learn the state of the art for performance techniques and practices. We have successfully included a number of PDC topics into this course, with relatively small background needed for the students to succeed in hands-on exercises. However, we have found a total lack of textbook support for the inclusion of PDC topics into an introductory performance course.

Current shared memory systems utilize complex memory hi-erarchies to maintain scalability when increasing the num-ber of processing units. Although hardware designers aim to hide this complexity from the programmer, ignoring the detailed architectural characteristics can harm performance significantly. We propose to expose the block-based design of caches in parallel computers to middleware designers to allow semi-automatic performance tuning with the system-atic translation from algorithms to an analytic performance model. For this, we design a simple interface for cache line aware (CLa) optimization, a translation methodology, and a full performance model for cache line transfers in ccNUMA systems. Algorithms developed using CLa design perform up to 14x better than vendor and open-source libraries, and 2x better than existing ccNUMA optimizations. © 2015 ACM.

A well-known problem when executing dataintensive workloads with such frameworks as MapReduce is that small jobs with processing requirements counted in the minutes may suffer from the presence of huge jobs requiring hours or days of compute time, leading to a job slowdown distribution that is very variable and that is uneven across jobs of different sizes. Previous solutions to this problem for sequential or rigid jobs in single-server and distributed-server systems include priority-based FeedBack Queueing (FBQ), and Task Assignment by Guessing Sizes (TAGS), which kills and restarts from scratch on another server jobs that exceed the local time limit. In this paper, we derive four scheduling policies that are rightful descendants of existing size-based scheduling disciplines (among which FBQ and TAGS) with appropriate adaptations to dataintensive frameworks. The two main mechanisms employed by these policies are partitioning the resources of the datacenter, and isolating jobs with different size ranges. We evaluate these policies by means of realistic simulations of representative MapReduce workloads from Facebook and show that under the best of these policies, the vast majority of short jobs in MapReduce workloads experience close to ideal job slowdowns even under high system loads (in the range of 0.7-0.9) while the slowdown of the very large jobs is not prohibitive. We validate our simulations by means of experiments on a real multicluster system, and we find that the job slowdown performance results obtained with both match remarkably well.

The needs of parallel runtime systems and the increasingly sophisticated languages and compilers they support do not line up with the services provided by general-purpose OSes. Furthermore, the semantics available to the runtime are lost at the system-call boundary in such OSes. Finally, because a runtime executes at user-level in such an environment, it cannot leverage hardware features that require kernel-mode privileges|a large portion of the functionality of the ma-chine is lost to it. These limitations warp the design, imple-mentation, functionality, and performance of parallel run-times. We summarize the case for eliminating these com-promises by transforming parallel runtimes into OS kernels. We also demonstrate that it is feasible to do so. Our evi-dence comes from Nautilus, a prototype kernel framework that we built to support such transformations. After de-scribing Nautilus, we report on our experiences using it to transform three very difierent runtimes into kernels. © 2015 ACM.

The approach allows to organize distributed storage of large amounts of diverse data in order to further their parallel processing in high performance cluster systems for problems of climatic processes analysis and forecasting. For different classes of data was used the practice of using meta descriptions - like formalism associated with certain categories of resources. Development of a metadata component was made based on an analysis of data of surface meteorological observations, atmosphere vertical sounding, atmosphere wind sounding, weather radar observing, observations from satellites and others. A common set of metadata components was formed for their general description. The structure and content of the main components of a generalized meta descriptions are presented in detail on the example of reporting meteorological observations from land and sea stations.

Simulation of wireless systems is highly complex and can only be efficient if the simulation is executed in parallel. To this end, independent events have to be identified to enable their simultaneous execution. Hence, the number of events identified as independent needs to be maximized in order to increase the level of parallelism. Traditionally, dependencies are determined only by time and location of events: If two events take place on the same simulation entity, they must be simulated in timestamp order. Our approach to overcome this limitation is to also investigate data-dependencies between events. This enables event reordering and parallelization even for events at the same simulation entity. To this end, we design the simulation language PSimLa, which aids this process. In this paper, we discuss the PSimLa design and compiler as well as our data-dependency analysis approach in detail and present case studies of wireless network models, speeded up by a factor of 10 on 12 cores where time-based parallelization only achieves a 1.6x speedup.
