Modern science often requires the processing and analysis of vast amounts of data in search of postulated phenomena, and the validation of core principles through the simulation of complex system behaviors and interactions. This is the case in fields such as astronomy, bioinformatics, physics, and climate and ocean modeling, and others. In order to support the computational and data needs of today's science, new knowledge must be gained on how to deliver the growing high-performance and distributed computing resources to the scientist's desktop in an accessible, reliable and scalable way. In over a decade of working with domain scientists, the Pegasus project [1,2] has developed tools and techniques that automate the computational processes used in data- and compute-intensive research. Among them is the scientific workflow management system, Pegasus, which is being used by researchers to model seismic wave propagation, to discover new celestial objects, to study RNA critical to human brain development, and to investigate other important research *** talk will review the conception and evolution of the Pegasus research program. It will touch upon the role of scientific workflow systems in advancing science, and will give specific examples of how the Pegasus Workflow Management System has done so. It will describe how the Pegasus project has adapted to changes in application needs and to advances in high performance and distributed computing systems. It will discuss the interleaving of Computer Science research and software development and how each benefits from the other while providing value to other science domains. The talk will also stress the importance of forming collaborations, both within Computer Science and with other disciplines, to help solve real-world problems and have fun along way.

In this paper we propose executive deferred update replication (EDUR), a novel algorithm for multi-primary replication of transactional memory and databases. EDUR streamlines transaction certification (i.e., checking for conflicts between concurrent transactions) with the broadcast protocol, which improves overall performance and scalability compared to deferred update replication based on total order broadcast (TOB). EDUR uses executive order broadcast (EOB), a novel protocol that can be seen as a generalization of TOB. Compared to TOB, EOB features new primitives and properties that enable the application to delegate some work to a leader-a process inherently present in many TOB algorithms that is responsible for coordination of message dissemination. The results of experimental evaluation show significant performance gains when using our approach.

This extended abstract discusses scalable deferred update replication in geographically distributed settings. SDUR scales deferred update replication, a well-established proach used in several database replicated systems, by means of data partitioning. SDUR distinguishes between fast local transactions and slower global transactions. Although local transactions scale linearly with the number of partitions (under certain workloads), when deployed in a geographically distributed environment they may be significantly delayed by the much slower global transactions-in some settings global transactions can slow down local transactions by factor of 10. We presented two techniques that account for this limitation: Transaction delaying is simple, however, produces limited improvements;reordering, a more sophisticated approach, provides considerable reduction in latency of local transactions, mainly in deployments where global transactions harm local transactions the most.

Cloud computing infrastructures leverage fault-tolerant and geographically distributed services in order to meet the requirements of modern applications. Each service deals with a large number of clients that compete for the resources it offers. When the load increases, the service needs to scale. In this paper, we investigate a scalability solution which consists in partitioning the service state. We formulate specific conditions under which a service is partitionable. Then, we present a general algorithm to build a dependable and consistent partitioned service. To assess the practicability of our approach, we implement and evaluate the ZooFence coordination service. ZooFence orchestrates several instances of ZooKeeper and presents the exact same API and semantics to its clients. It automatically splits the coordination service state among ZooKeeper instances while being transparent to the application. By reducing the convoy effect on operations and leveraging the workload locality, our approach allows proposing a coordination service with a greater scalability than with a single ZooKeeper instance. The evaluation of ZooFence assesses this claim for two benchmarks, a synthetic service of concurrent queues and the BookKeeper distributed logging engine.

The high intensity of research and modeling in fields of mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry requires new computing resources. For the big computational complexity of such tasks computing time is large and costly. The most efficient way to increase efficiency is to adopt parallel principles. Purpose of this paper is to present the issue of parallel computing with emphasis on the analysis of parallel systems, the impact of communication delays on their efficiency and on overall execution time. Paper focuses is on finite algorithms for solving systems of linear equations, namely the matrix manipulation (Gauss elimination method GEM). Algorithms are designed for architectures with shared memory (openMP), distributed-memory (MPI) and for their combination (MPI+openMP). The properties of the algorithms were analytically determined and they were experimentally verified. The conclusions are drawn for theory and practice. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, a two-level coordinating control approach is developed for the islanded operation of a microgrid system. The microgrid includes n parallel connections of distributed generation (DG) units. These units and the load are connected to the common coupling point (PCC). In the islanded operation of the microgrid, the master DG unit handles the voltage and frequency control of the load, and the slaves DG units regulate their power components based on utilizing the conventional dq-current control strategy. It is shown that the parallel connection of n DG units in islanded mode forms an interconnected control system which is conveniently controlled in a two-level coordinating scheme. MATLAB simulations of a typical microgrid system have illustrated the effective performance under the developed control strategy.

Multicore processors are nowadays widespread across desktop, laptop, server, and even smartphone and tablets devices. The rise of such powerful execution environments calls for new parallel and distributed Description Logics (DLs) reasoning algorithms. Many sophisticated optimizations have been explored and have considerably enhanced DL reasoning with light ontologies. Non-determinism remains a main source of complexity for implemented systems handling ontologies relying on more expressive logics. In this work, we explore handling non-determinism with DL languages enabling qualified cardinality restrictions. We implement a fork/join parallel framework into our hybrid algebraic reasoner, which handles qualified cardinality restrictions and nominals using in-equation solving. Preliminary evaluation shows encouraging results.
