Ownership trees are a simple yet powerful method of extracting an object-oriented program's implicit aggregation structure from its object graph. The topology of a program's ownership tree is independent of scale object-oriented programs are constructed from objects, and the relationship between a whole system and its top-level components is the same as the relationship between a low-level data structure and the objects that implement it. Because of this independence, a software visualisation tool based on ownership trees is applicable at all levels of abstraction within a program's design. Visualising ownership trees can support learning and teaching about object-oriented programs, as well as debugging and maintaining them.

Separation of concerns is a basic engineering principle that is also at the core of object-oriented analysis and design methods in the context of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The UML gives the designer a rich, but somehow disorganized, set of views on her model as well as many features, such as design pattern occurrences, stereotypes or tag values, allowing her to add nonfunctional information to a model. Aspect-oriented concepts are applied to manage the multitude of design constraints. However it can then be an overwhelming task to reconcile the various aspects of a model into a working implementation. We introduce our UMLAUT framework as a tool for "weaving" aspects when modeling with the UML. This is accompanied with an example of a distributed multimedia application, applying two different weavings: one for implementation, the other one for validation based on model checking technology.

The varied nature of manufacturing systems, which is wide, dynamic and complex, are obstacles in manufacturing software systems development. The paper proposes a solution to solve these problems by developing a manufacturing application framework with a set of integrated reusable components, which can be adapted to suit specific manufacturing applications. Two subdomains of the manufacturing domain, production management (PM) and statistical quality control (SQC), are the main focuses in the paper. A generic model of the manufacturing domain is proposed based on the structure and behavior of each of the PM and SQC, from which the design infrastructure of the application framework is derived, based on the concept of design patterns. The details of the application framework development by integrating object oriented technology and component based development to achieve large-scale software reuse in manufacturing application development projects are also discussed.

The success of distributed object technology, depends on the advent of object Request Broker (ORB) architectures that are able to integrate flexible support for various nonfunctional requirements such as security, real-time, transactions, etc. We promote component framework technology as the cornerstone for realizing such generic platforms. An ORB component framework leverages the "glue" that connects customized ORB components together. We present a reflective component architecture that improves the dynamics of this glue, such that system-wide integration of new non-functional requirements into a running ORB system becomes possible.

The research presented addresses the problem of change impact analysis (CIA) for object oriented software. A major problem for developers in an evolutionary environment is that seemingly small changes can ripple throughout the system to have major unintended impacts elsewhere. As a result, software developers need to understand how a change to a software system will affect the rest of the system. Major results of this research include definitions for object oriented data dependency graphs, a set of algorithms that allow software developers to evaluate proposed changes on object oriented software, a set of object oriented change impact metrics to quantitatively evaluate the change impacts, and a proof-of-concept tool (ChAT) that computes the impacts of changes. This research also supports efficient regression testing by helping testers decide what classes and methods need to be retested, and in supporting cost estimation and schedule planning.

In this study, an agent based Virtual Classroom defined within the Virtual University is presented. A set of agents of the same type is responsible for handling different users and their requests. The classroom represents an interface between the students and a virtual professor and should provide personalized learning materials. The Virtual Classroom system is Web based and its usage is intuitive, although the content provided to students, changes accordingly to its affinities for subjects and media types.

Self-calibration is a new technique for the study of internal product metrics, sometimes called "observations" and calibrating these against their frequency, or probability of occurring in common programming practice (CPP). Data gathering and analysis of the distribution of observations is an important prerequisite for predicting external qualities, and in particular software complexity. The main virtue of our technique is that it eliminates the use of absolute values in decision-making, and allows gauging local values in comparison with a scale computed from a standard and global database. Method profiles are introduced as a visual means to compare individual projects or categories of methods against the CPP. Although the techniques are general and could in principle be applied to traditional programming languages, the focus of the paper is on object oriented languages using Java. The techniques are employed in a suite of 17 metrics in a body of circa thirty thousand Java methods.

Modern industrial automation software is growing more and more complex. At the same time development time and costs have to be reduced. In order to reconcile these opposing demands a new approach is needed based on domain-specific architectures with appropriate plug-in components. object-oriented frameworks offer a reuse efficiency not achievable with other techniques. Unfortunately, framework comprehension and use is normally difficult due to a steep learning curve and the lack of tool support. This work proposes the use of component models for structuring frameworks in order to simultaneously improve usability and comprehension of object-oriented frameworks. The approach is illustrated with a framework for elevator control software complying to the JavaBeans component model. This paper discusses the structure and the advantages of the approach but also reveals problematic points which should be considered in similar projects.

We consider the inheritance of state based behavior in object oriented analysis and design, as it arises, for example, in specifying behavior in the UML using statecharts. We concentrate on behavioral conformity and the resulting substitutability of classes, whereby the inheritance mechanism is to retain original behaviors. There are many deep and unresolved questions around this issue, which cannot be addressed without a clear and rigorous picture of what exactly is meant by behavioral conformity, and how computationally complex it is to detect. We first define a basic propositional level computational model for object oriented designs, and then define substitutability and inheritance in the linear and branching paradigms. We relate these to trace containment and R. Milner's (1971) notion of simulation and deduce the complexity of some of the relevant algorithmic problems. The paper thus sets the stage for further research on behavioral inheritance.

Changeability is one of the major concerns in software development. object-oriented (OO) technology itself is not enough to solve this problem. In this paper, we first discuss how the changeability issue is handled in current software development methods and what is the most important prerequisite for solving the software changeability problem. Based on these analyses, we argue that most of current OO analysis methods have missed an important activity in their analysis phase, i.e. change analysis. Thus, OO software systems developed according to these methods often cannot exhibit the expected maintainability, extensibility and reusability. In order to improve current OO analysis methods, we have proposed a conceptual framework for conducting a systematic change analysis in the software analysis phase. A detailed case study of the application of this framework in a real software project is also described in this paper.
